Old Testament
No one can read the eighth chapter of Psalm and not feel an elevated sense of value and personal worth. The dignity of man constitutes one of the Bible’s primary assumptions and emerges clearly in all New Testament literature. Both Old and New Testaments describe man as a person created in the image of God crowned with glory and honor, the highest concern of God, the ultimate value in the universe.
But the Bible does not allow us to become too comfortable with ourselves for as we read it, we become acutely aware of the fact that these human qualities are NOT the focus of Scripture’s attention. It is the problem of man that is the Bible’s central and ultimate concern; the problem of the lost vision of the value and worth God accorded man.
The Old Testament portrays man as being created morally pure, placed in Eden with a specific prohibition. His initial disobedience brought swift negative consequences both upon the husband and wife and upon their progeny. Man’s original image of God became marred and twisted. Evil became a constant and malignant element in the whole of human experience. It brought social and interpersonal strife, disorganizing human relationships and corrupting all human institutions.
The moral deviation, leading to spiritual and moral degradation, multiplied sins of both flesh and spirit and became the major expressions of fallen human nature. The major bearers of man’s early cultural history are shown by the Old Testament to have been arrogant and systematically evil, until the Lord determined to preserve providentially the family of Noah, and make a new beginning with the race.
The post-diluvian history reveals human nature to express itself continuously in terms of intoxication, pride and greed. The Patriarchal period, the period of the Captivity in Egypt, the epoch of the Exodus, the settlement in Canaan, and the era of the Judges, all reveal essentially the same pattern of deviant human behavior. The Old Testament dramatizes this in the historical Book of Judges, in which it is said that selfish human wants and desires ruled society. Like a refrain, it is said,
After Ehud died, the Israelites once again did evil in the eyes of the LORD.. Judges 4:1.
Again the Israelites did evil in the eyes of the LORD, and for seven years he gave them into the hands of the Midianites.Judges 6:1.
Again the Israelites did evil in the eyes of the LORD. They served the Baals and the Ashtoreths, and the gods of Aram...Judges 10:6.
Again the Israelites did evil in the eyes of the LORD, so the LORD delivered them into the hands of the Philistines for forty years. Judges 13:1.
Man wants to commune with God but to do so involve obedience in which man’s total being finds its true unity. Without this obedience there is no communion; and without communion there is only disintegration, misery and death (loss of life’s spiritual power). It is the paradox of the freedom given man that by it we are enabled to find both true life in communion with God or our own degeneration and destruction. On the one hand, we want to obey and to live in communion with God, but on the other, we desire being “like God.” But the desire to be “like God” is a denial of the desire to be obedient and commune with God.
Man’s problem is further complicated by the fact that we have lost the vision of community. We do not exist in isolation before God. Before God, it is never just me, but we. We have been placed by God in a community, apart from which we are not our true selves and can never be. In Genesis 1:27-28, this is made clear by the use of the term “man” and “him” for the human species, which is separated into male and female, to whom the command to “be fruitful and multiply” is given.
“So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them. God blessed them and said to them, ‘Be fruitful and increase in number; fill the earth and subdue it. Rule over the fish of the sea and the birds of the air and over every living creature that moves on the ground.”
In the second chapter of Genesis, the life of individual man is seen to be incomplete apart from woman, and the two in marriage are to be “one flesh,” that is, as one personality. In the order of creation therefore, the individual is seen to exist, not in isolation but in the context of the family. The freedom of man is limited by the necessity God laid upon him in creation to live in the context of the family relationship and in obedience to the will of God governing it. Likewise, there is no individual Christianity for we are all members of the Body of Christ, the family of God. This concept immediately pulls the rug out from under the concept of personal religion or faith.
Neither does the family unit live in isolation. Once again the Bible is clear in its assertion that the family unit does not function in segregation, but is set within still larger groups called society and nation. God’s law in the covenant therefore further delimits the freedom of the individual in the interest of peace and harmony within the group. Man must live in society for apart from it our life has no meaning. Our obedience therefore, is a type which involves the love of God AND our neighbor. Man’s requirement is to love both God and each other as we love ourselves. But we have lost the vision of God and lost touch with God’s vision and desire to envision and realize only our own self interest in which self-love denies and betrays the other two (God and neighbor).
The evil of the flesh is not so much from the instincts and appetites connected with the body in themselves as it is from the fact that we love our own bodies more than the Body of Christ, the community for which God has created us. We love our own bodies so much in fact, that we are ready and willing to use our own and other people’s bodies for our own fleeting pleasure.
Thus, the roots of sin in the Old Testament appear numerous. Looking at our first parents, we see the picture of man striving to “be like God” exhibiting his free will without regard to his Creator. In most of the books of the Pentateuch, many incidents illustrate the elect’s lack of faith in God’s promises. In the prophetic writings we cannot miss sin being identified as a violation of God’s covenant law, both in regards to worship and ordinary life. Actually, in all situations the significance of sin is its violation of God’s command and rebellion against His authority. The third chapter of Genesis presents this rebellion as the cause of man’s trouble on earth. By disobeying God, man has violated communion, has been expelled from Paradise, and has brought on himself and on the earth God’s curse. This is the problem of the lost vision.
Into this heritage every infant is born, and is shaped by it from the moment of birth. The infant, as he/she grows into a self-conscious moral personality in the interplay with his/her human environment, is already infected with evil. And all our sins are the working out of that heritage.
This “fall” of our first parents from God’s gracious communion, a conception which has played such an important role in Christian theology, does not, however, separate us completely from God’s grace. The election of Israel is the proof: “I will bless those who bless you, and whoever curses you I will curse; and all peoples on earth will be blessed through you.” Genesis 12:3. Nevertheless, in this life we can expect nothing but struggle with temptation, with childbirth, and with nature for our food. We can expect no simple peace or security in this life apart from God’s grace and His gracious salvation.
It is this perspective that the whole Bible sees the life of man and earthly society. The focus of attention in NOT on the worth of man, it is rather on the problem of man, God’s judgment, and His gracious promises of salvation and their fulfillment.
New Testament
The estimate of man in the New Testament, and especially in the teachings of our Lord, rests basically upon the Hebrew understanding of human nature and the Old Testament interpretation of human history. The four Gospels do not present a doctrine of man per se; but portrays the activities of Jesus as He met men and women in the context of their daily lives and often emergency situations; and out of these situations emerged definite teachings with respect to the nature of man.
Men were regarded as sinners, and our human condition is that which resulted from our sinfulness. Jesus addressed His disciple with these words:
“If you then, though you are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give the Holy Spirit to those who ask him!” Luke 11:13.
This seems to suggest that man is unequivocally involved in its sinful predicament. Jesus recognized sin’s corruption and so we hear Him assert:
“What goes into a man's mouth does not make him 'unclean,' but what comes out of his mouth, that is what makes him 'unclean.' "Matthew 15:11.
Nothing outside a man can make him 'unclean' by going into him. Rather, it is what comes out of a man that makes him 'unclean.' Mark 7:15.
When we consider man’s history, endless wars, perversions, cruelties, stupidities, we experience difficulty comprehending man as being “made a little lower than the angels.” And yet, we know that the forces which are now destroying mankind are enabled to do so only because of man’s consent; man's agreement with the god of this world. We as a human family have lost the vision of the true greatness accorded to us by God to such an extent that to all appearances, we are little more than self-destructive animals.
This is the problem of man and the shame of the lost vision.

Rev Lady, Wonderful vicissitudes on the original purpose of mankind and God's VISION...
God’s plan and purpose for us has not changed! “The moral deviation, leading to spiritual and moral degradation, multiplied sins of both flesh and spirit and became the major expressions of fallen human nature. The major bearers of man’s early cultural history are shown by the Old Testament to have been arrogant and systematically evil, until the Lord determined to preserve providentially the family of Noah, and make a new beginning with the race.” Wonderful synopsis as to why we are now here and what has transpired!
As you so wonderfully stated: “Without this obedience there is no communion; and without communion there is only disintegration, misery and death (loss of life’s spiritual power).” One can not just ignore our Creator and think that things will work out… you are right about losing the vision for the community….
It is so very important to know GOD and to KNOW the Word of God! Our reputation is ALWAYS safe with HIM! All of God’s Word is quite true…” The election of Israel is the proof: “I will bless those who bless you, and whoever curses you I will curse; and all peoples on earth will be blessed through you.” Genesis 12:3” We must obey GOD rather than man…
God has not left us ignorant! He has given us His WORD and His Holy Spirit to guide us to ALL TRUTH! “The four Gospels do not present a doctrine of man per se; but portrays the activities of Jesus as He met men and women in the context of their daily lives and often emergency situations; and out of these situations emerged definite teachings with respect to the nature of man! Amen! & Amen!
There is much going on about us in this world to distract us from our purpose and God’s plan for HIS children = The Body, HIS CHURCH!!! We must continue to seek His will and His way in our lives and YES as you say; HIS VISION! “GREATER is HE that is in us than he that is in the world!” Thank you for this profound and enlightening Spirit filled “Message!” May the Lord’s Favor and Grace continue to rest upon you! Thank you for sharing as always it is indeed a pleasure! In HIS Love, Joy & Peace
RevLady, this goes right back to what we've been discussing regarding the isolationist attitude. When we break communion with God and the Body of Christ, we've essentially ignored the vision He put before each of us. When we flatly ignore this and put our own bodies and agendas above that of the vision God put before us, than what does that really say about the multitude of church leaders and churches who have created their own Jericho?
This is actually, in my opinion, an excellant companion piece to "Are you Ready for a Spiritual 9/11?" and this is not to elevate what I wrote. Both focus on the isolationism. If we are of His image and we are supposedly different parts of the Body of Christ, than it follows that when we break communion with God, we've done the same with the Body.
Isolationism from the pulpit down.
Great hub with great insights to ponder.Truly with so much lawlessness in the world today, men have wandered miles away from God's wonderful plan. Truly as christias we need to labor harder nowadays for the Gospel in order to restore God's vision for men. Thank you for sharing these timely reminder. Blessings to you and your family. Best regards.
Good evening Reverend Lady,
It is very sad for me to see those we love, once claiming to be believers and an active member of the family of God, fall away. And they don't even know they've fallen, because they won't see and they won't hear.
My heart breaks to see this happen. And to see one of my family members fall away, give in to the world, well, it feels like one of my limbs is suddenly gone missing. We are supposed to be one body, in Christ, one heart and one mind, in Christ. But the world today deceives to complete corruption.
We are not self-sufficient. We are nothing outside the body of Christ. Today, more than ever, I pray for strength to speak God's Truth, His Word, without fear. As you said above, "We must tell it as we know it and let the Spirit work His works."
Thank you, RevLady, for a very honestly told hub. May our precious and loving Father always bless you and keep you writing His Word.
Sending you much love and many, many BIG hugs today, in Christ Jesus,
VKA
RevLady: I am humbled by this writing. Thank you for the wake up call.
It takes us to the point that although spiritual beings, while in our adopted fleshly forms, if we are not always intune to Our Father, and His desires within our lives, our fleshly forms, can and will easily become misdirected, away from Father God, by the evil one, the liar and deceiver, and killer, and we will begin to slowly drift away from His wisdom, His word, His counsel, thus causing our spirit to slowly become corrupted by him.
We must cling to Jesus Words of Salvation. "I AM the way, the truth, and the life," In order to guard against the evil one and cling to our spiritual salvation, until we are either called home, or gathered up when the trumpet is sounded and Jesus returns to gather to Himself all who have sought salvation through Him.
My spirit is singing and rejoicing.
Brother Dave.
We often fail to understand the heights from which we have fallen. When we consider the glory God bestowed upon the crown of His creation in the very beginning... man, and the consequences of the fall, we can gain a vision of what God wishhes to restore us to. There was no sickness or disease. There was no death. God spoke directly to Adam in the garden. Not like the voice you hear when you read or think, but an audible voice as one speaks out loud. All of creation was affected by the fall of man. This is the height from which we have fallen. Thank you for reminding us not only what was intended from the beginning, but also what God has promised to restore.
These Scripture are so true. Your Hub is so true and thank God He's purpose for us has not changed! I voted-up and useful on this Hub!!! God Bless you RevLady.
Living with weaknesses and faults is all part of being human, I suppose. Your hub reminded me of the constant struggle we must have with ourselves in order to try and live up to what God wants of us. I guess it is our characters that come through with our struggles (which I think you discussed in a previous hub). Whether we can try to overcome our shames and better ourselves is what makes us who we really are.
Thoughtful Hub. You explained the human condition very well. Life without God equals a life of disentegration.
It is a battle for all I think to not withdraw from the vision and purpose that is greater than ourselves so we may pursue our own personal agendas which most generally exclude God or at best uses Him.
It is so true that the Word of God never lets us get too comfortable with ourselves and gratefully so...oh where would we be?
I think
that most of the unrest within our souls and with those around us has to do with not living within the divine plans and purposes of the creator. We get it so backwards sometimes. He who seeks to save his life will lose it and he who loses His life for His name sake finds it.
The community part is the one I struggle with the most. I tend to isolate. It would not bother me a bit to not leave my home for months Yet I know as your hub states this isn't part of the divine plan.
It is also a point to consider that in being part of a larger community we also become more responsible for what happens within that community. There were times when one man sinned and the entire commnuity suffered the consequences. Such as when Achan took some cursed items from Jericho.
Love your insights. They make me think deeply.
"Just living in America makes us part of America's sins".
This is a wake up call, South Africa is so full of evil and our leader more so .... May we never forget to pray for my country - South Africa as well. Thanks for this hub.
Thank you Rev Lady Amen to you Sister in Christ, and Thank you Lord troubles do not last.
Your mind and thoughts in regard to God are so brilliant and educational. Just one of your fine hubs is a wonderful education. God Bless You dear heart. Wishing you and your loved ones a safe and pleasant Labor Day weekend.
Deep and beautiful writing RevLady. Sad but true it is our rebellion and wanting have our own personal "religion" guide us instead of the clear mandates of the Lord that is the problem.
Thank you Revlady for a well augustrated andprofound hub, talking about the problem of man and the shame of the lost vision, which is true. Man has lost his spiritual vision and lost his way. My daily word is about his likeness and his image.Thank you for sharing. Godspeed. creativeone59
Rev Lady, one only need step back and look, and listen, it is then we hear and see the pointless squabbles of men, that show that we have lost our way/vision that we were given. Many choose this life over life eternal. I still hear the words"you only live once" referring to this life and tasting all things, some they should not. I'm not perfect by no means but I can talk to the Lord and give him my strife along with my thanks and focus, focus, focus on a better time to come.
voted up, Dusty
Man's agreement with the God of this world -- selfishness and material greed. It is true our vision is lost and the gift from HIM is forever lost. Wonderful hub, Maita
I was gone for a little while but glad to come back to this. Fantastic. I love the subject for it is not only the beginning of our woes, it is the fulfillment of our joy.
In Isaiah 55 Yahweh calls upon the wicked to forsake his ways and thoughts, and return. And that return was set forth by the very thing that began our fall. His Word.
He said, "in the day that thou eatest thereof thou shalt surely die." He could not go back on His Word.
But He let us know that His thoughts and ways are not our thoughts and ways, that His are higher. His Word "goeth forth out of My mouth: it shall not return unto Me void, but it shall accomplish that which I please, and it shall prosper in the thing whereto I sent it."
Thus, His Word is His bond, and His Word lives to justify whomsoever He will - to forgive whomsoever He will - to redeem whomsoever He will.
That desire to be godlike can still be obtained despite our flaws, our individual weaknesses. With Christ, the vision is once again restored.
John 9:39 'For judgment I am come into this world, that they which see not might see . . .' Peace
As Christians we're not to question God, but I some times wonder why man was given dominion over animals? Animals have always obeyed Gods law. Man on the other hand clings to the world of the flesh faithless and lost.
