The Church in Crisis
81
Preliminary Note:
"Kingdom of God," it is used here in the same sense as found in the Lord’s Prayer and is understood as sovereign power, authority and rulership.
Let me begin by asserting that there is such a thing as collective sickness and it can take place within the context of churches. The Corinthian church was a sick church. Paul said so. Near the close of chapter 11, in his first letter he declares, many among you are weak and sick, and a number of you have fallen asleep.
The Church in America is sick, it is unwell, unhealthy and in need of critical change and restoration. This needed change and resuscitation requires repentance because repentance results in spiritual transformation.
To believe that the church in American is healthy is to delude ourselves; the evidence of its state is all around us. The fierce winds of secularism have grown stronger with each passing year and vividly seen in the statistical growth of nonbelievers. Regardless of how optimistic we may be about the future of Christianity and the church, we cannot ignore the fact that the result of our nation’s secularizing has had a devastating impact upon the church. Studies continue to show that comparing the churched with the un-churched Americans, in a number of categories (cheating on taxes, fornication, exaggerating resumes etc.); there was little difference in the ethical views and behavior of the churched and un-churched. There are profound spiritual issues in the church that cannot be solved without coming to terms with the root causes in a repentant, holistic way.
The call to live in relationship and submission to the great King of the universe requires submission to His standards of righteousness. Unfortunately, the body of Christ has suffered the same kind of moral erosion as our worldly brothers and sisters. Somewhere along the path, Christians filed dissolution papers; commitment to the Kingdom has been violated, and we are now awaiting the final decree of divorce between Christian beliefs and Christian behaviors as seen in moral life and in public behavior. This fact alone gives us sufficient cause to reevaluate the authoritative claims of the Kingdom of God upon individuals and churches alike. In my mind, the greatest threat to Christianity in the 21st century is not in ritualism, dogma, or orthodoxy, but rather it is the disconnection between belief and behavior. Consistency in Christian lifestyle is no longer expected in the personal and corporate life of believers. This "oh well, what is -is" attitude is degrading to the Kingdom of God.
The startling statistics revealing the disconnection between Christian’s belief systems and practice, are pathetic to say the least. The effect of the Christian disconnect has had upon pastors, lay leaders, and the eyes of the watching world is alarming. Many view the church as an irrelevant and hypocritical institution.
The spiritual and moral decay of the lives of believers, the breakdown of marriage and family, and the lack of spiritual depth and growth among confessing Christians, have all reached depressing proportions. I have no doubt that many readers will agree that the life values of Christian youth and adults are often indistinguishable from the world’s life values. In survey after survey, the beliefs of Christians are largely the same as the beliefs of non-Christians.
Christianity, although curiously interesting to Americans, remains strangely incapable of influencing the lives of a large number of people. No matter how you look at the statistics, they all seem to point to the same conclusion: the American church exerts little influence on society. Despite the activities of thousands of congregations, the church in American is losing influence and members faster than any other major institution in this nation. George Barna, founder of the Barna Research Group, predicts one of two outcomes for the United States within the next few years: “either massive spiritual revival or total moral anarchy. It all depends on whether the church can rise to the occasion and respond to current trends.”
Many churches boast memberships of thousand and many others boast increasing memberships weekly. Nevertheless, the sad reality is that while many new faces may be joining, just as many, if not more, of the “churched” are quietly exiting. Members of churches, who leave, leave because of disillusionment. They are people for whom the faith has not proven to be as apparently claimed. Their souls deepest needs remain lacking. In his book, Soul Survivor: How My Faith Survived the Church, Yancy laments how he spent most of his life in recovery from the church. All intelligent information regarding the moral state of the church point to a spiritual problem far deeper than surveys can reveal.
This Christian disconnection has also affected perception of the reality of God in the eyes of the unbelieving world. Clergy sex scandals, financial deception, power struggles, church splits, decreasing concern for racial and ethnic justice and social issues, have all resulted in a loss of credibility for the church within our society. This lack of consistency in holiness and sanctification has resulted in worldliness that has spiritually worn-out segments of truth seekers. It has caused them to dismiss the church as hypocritical institutions. The church is no longer the visible compass for how people are to live their daily lives.
The New Testament knows nothing of this disconnection between beliefs and behavior. Jesus warns that words or acts alone do not constitute a true relationship with Him. Many will say to me on that day, 'Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name, and in your name drive out demons and perform many miracles?' Then I will tell them plainly, 'I never knew you. Away from me, you evildoers!' Matthew 7:22-23.
I certainly do not have all the answers. But I do know that the church needs reviving and regeneration. Only a recovery of the theological and spiritual roots of the Kingdom of God, a recovery that includes repentance, brokenness, and humility, can transform the lethargy of the church. I believe that when the church is regenerated and revived, the public perception of the church will change for the good. The call for theological and spiritual reflection and repentance is mandatory to eliminate the attitude that the Christian disconnect is acceptable within the life of individuals or the corporate behavior of churches.

*Did You Know?
The largest Christian church in the world is in Seoul, South Korea.
The second largest Christian church in the world is in Leagers, Nigeria (a Moslem nation) while the largest Moslem training center in the world is in New York City, NY.
195 million Americans have no faith involvement at all in their lives which makes the U.S. the third largest unchurched nation following China and India.
Several thousand people die every day in the United States without ever having heard the good news of the Gospel.
The largest center for teaching Eastern Meditation Techniques exists in Fairfield, Iowa.
The world's largest Muslim training center is in New York City.
That less than one in ten people who make a decision to follow Jesus do so in the context of a church. Most people will enter into a relationship with Jesus by seeing His life and Kingdom lived out in the lives of family members or friends.
With its 195 million unchurched people, America has become the new mission field. America has more unchurched people than the entire populations of all but 11 of the world's 194 nations.
In the last ten years the combined membership of the Protestant denominations has declined 4.5 million while the population of our nation has increase by 24 million.

Happy New Years to you young lady.
I'm reminded of the fact of how foolish man have chosen to either "Add to, or Take Away" from God's Word thru out time, to include this generation. For you point out very well, the consequences of such foolish choices by man. Good news young lady, Heaven Wont be too crowed, when those that choose to "Obey" Him, get there. U make a great point "Repent", however as u well know, one must First "Hear" His Words, then of Course "Believe" "Confess" "Repent" be "Baptized", for then the Lord will Add them To His Church, For He only Built One, "HIS"! But as you point out, and call it thee "American" church, another example of the arrorgance of ole Foolish Man, to once again rebel against what God Hath said.. hmmmmmmmm.. Sad.. but u raise some great "Food For Thoughts", ,and like you, i too, pray daily, that those will "Wake Up", and thus repent. Nice article young lady, keep them coming, in so that others may learn from you, and like me, appreicate you.
In Christian Charity,
Jim

Wow, you woke up spitting fire today RevLady, and I agree with everything you said. There is a spirit in the churches today, but it is the spirit of entertainment. The idea that people must always be multi-tasking has intruded on the holy fields also. People grow bored quickly and they can't take time out to pray, meditate, reflect and learn the word. If you don't hook them right away, they are out the door looking for the next big thrill. And don't try to sternly to preach repentance because they are all secure in their ways. The idols are many. Assembly just can't compete with that and shouldn't try. We must remember it is not the number of souls we save but firstly, that we keep the ones we are given. If we have 100, and one goes astray, we got to get that one back. Great start to the day. Thanks and peace.
Rev Lady, Amen! Excellent "Message"!The "Church" is in crisis! The Corinthian Church is a great example! God tells us in Corinthians what NOT to do! The church in Corinth was very carnal so is much of the CHURCH today!
True Revival is much needed! For example in a large city here in California with many congregations gathering there is a yearly citywide revival! For five years straight there have been no converts! I find this disturbing! The main issue was who paid what and how much the speaker would be paid and perks compensated... This is not revival! Paying cash under the table for Anniversaries and directing checks to be made out to the pastor collected by the church? Pastors divorcing and marrying someone else in the congregation, or not marrying yet fathering children... It goes on..."LORD HELP US!"
It is so true when you say: "The call to live in relationship and submission to the great King of the universe requires submission to His standards of righteousness. Unfortunately, the body of Christ has suffered the same kind of moral erosion as our worldly brothers and sisters. Somewhere along the path, Christians filed dissolution papers; commitment to the Kingdom has been violated, and we are now awaiting the final decree of divorce between Christian beliefs and Christian behaviors as seen in moral life and in public behavior.." Amen!
When trying to bring attention to the fact the Church has begun to compromise & follow the trends of the world... Rather than God's Church setting the standards. Bringing this to attention; one is often shut down, credibility undermined and blacklisted or perceived as negative, not willing to submit to the leader? Or you are not going along with the vision... "We are doing a new thing" is a theme often coined to justify following the latest trends of the world... Encouraging dressing down for Jesus and dressing up for prom to our teenagers. Encouraging everybody to wear unisex T shirts all this gives them conflicting messages and further adds to their low self esteem subliminally making Jesus a low priority... Please excuse my tangent!
True but Alarming statistics you have provided! It really is time to "wake up"! Our only antedote as HIS CHURCH is to return to HIS WORD and apply what it says! Which is easier said than done...
Thank you for shedding light on a subject that needs to stay in the forefront! There is nothing that is hidden from the Lord! We all really do need to live "as though we are in an audience of ONE" meaning before Him! He really does know and see ALL! Thank you for sharing my sister! Much Love & Blessings!
Hi RevLady, these are troubling ones, indeed but it is true,
I I wish and pray one day all will have their share so that ppeople will be back to know HIS teachings too, Happy New Year Rev,,, Bless always, Maita
Thank you RevLady for a wake up call for the christian churches, we all need to take notice and start hub. trying to fix the problem, because it's all of our proble. thank you for sharing such an enlightening hub. Godspeed. creativeone59
Wow, awesome. I just did a sermon on forgiveness and repentance. I wish I had read your hub before I gave it.I think I'll publish it so that you can look at it. and again, I will be using some of your material to add to my sermon. I know God sent you to us.
Rev Lady-
I agree with you so much here-the problem is widespread in Europe also.
What a great hub!
As a man that has been called into ministry I do agree that "The Church" needs a revival! As clergy we are called to serve God as he guides us.
Not only are we called to guide the lost to the Lamb of God we are also to guide those sheep that stray from the truth and into the tempters hands! we are to heard them back into his care!
However many Pastors, ministers, as well as Evangelist are more worried about popularity, image, as well as prestige rather than what we have been called for to get into the trenches being obedient to the calling that God has put on our lives!
To expect our Congregation to serve God almighty we must serve him!
RevLady as you know I have been on HubPages for a while I would like to say this is one of the most informative and truthful hubs I have ever read.
I have really enjoyed it. If it is ok would you email it to me for reference uses only?
Blessings To You

Thanks for making us all think.
I'm a fan.
This is so true what you have written, allot of people are now complaining about the church, I tell them, those that are disregarding the truth that is in the Word are not the true saints of God. Every religion has their bad. Muslim has theirs, and we are quick to point that out to others, when some one in muslim community threaten our national security. Well, we have our bad too, but we also have our good and faithful saints like you. We have to let the world know that these money grubbers are not us. The christain faith is a peaceful and loving faith. We are a faith of people who believe in sharing and caring, helping a person who has less than us.
Those that are in deep sin and refuse to walk out the Word of God in their lives are not one of us.
We must let the world know, that these people are ain't and not a saint.
Love ya and you write so good!
Wow, Reverend Lady, I read what everyone has to say here and agree, that the Christian church is in real danger, as are its believers.
As you said, "Many view the church as an irrelevant and hypocritical institution," and this is what I hear all the time. It saddens me very much.
Sad too, when you come to realize that there is no obvious difference in the life of a so-called Christian and a non-believer, when their manner of speech and behavior are so alike. It is very common to hear a brother or sister say, "This is how I am, and God will be my only judge."
“Most people will enter into a relationship with Jesus by seeing His life and Kingdom lived out in the lives of family members or friends.” This is where it really counts, that a believer "walks the talk!"
God bless you richly, and may He continue to fill your life with His Holy Spirit.
All my love to you in Christ Jesus,
VKA
Very interesting hub & well explained topic...I agree...
The state of the church today is indeed disheartening. I received the Lord in the 70's during the Charismatic revival. The saints were on fire, souls were being saved, filled with the Holy Spirit and hungry for the Word of God and wanting to be Godly vessels. We are experiencing, the great falling away the bible has spoken of.
The days of apostasy are upon us. But rather than fear the times we need to show Christ and Hid awesome love that much more, it is harder today than ever but thanks be to God He still is on the throne and victory is ours if we are obedient to Him, we have a hard task at hand in these days to help win the lost but through Jesus all things are still possible
Dear Rev Lady,
I am from Singapore. It happens to us too to the extend that I can't help thinking whether there are any difference between a Christian and a non-believer. We are getting worldly.
Most times, it's not enough just to wake up. We need to feel pain. The church should derive power from the cross, not just from waking up.
Thanks so much Rev for an incredible hub. Yes, many are disillusioned with the church. There has been so much happening that it is hard not to feel sad about the church's state of being. Priests who abuse children, churches that are too in the money game and on and on... I do have hope that there can be a turn around but it takes all of us to do it. I thank you for a well researched hub. Blessings.
Awesome!!! Yes it is time for the church to allow God too truely reign supreme. And that's where the healing of church will come; His Glorious Presence!!!
It is time to get back to the basic and repent and turn from our wicked ways. That means to get back to the cross and to allow God to fill us up and walk in his ways, not are ways, what we think or do, but his ways. Time is to short! Get on your faces and let God be God!
Wonderful educational work. I never realized so many people in America need to know more about our Holy father in Heaven. God Bless You Sweet and precious heart.
2 Chronicles 7:14: "if my people, who are called by my name, will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then will I hear from heaven and will forgive their sin and will heal their land."
Blessings RevLady
Go to your "holy churches" and "workout your salvation" with your "pastors". Bunch of Babel jerks & hypocrites, Jesus die in vain for you all.
Fine it was very interesting to know that church in America is not that much progressive. Christian charity helps to spread Gospel and providing charity services

A blessing to be the first to stop and wish you a "Good Morning" and a praise for what you have written here. Staggering stats for us to ponder.
We in Canada as well suffer in Churches, people today we are finding are consumer oriented, they seek the best show in town on Sundays, the latest most dynamic worship team draws the crowds as well as the Starbucks in the lobbies, liabraries following a close second, conferences for anything and everything. All offering a great service to people attending, but what is coming from the pulpit far to often fluffy, Happy Clappy stuff. "Love your neighbor after you love yourself first".
I recently finished reading a book that had a profound effect on me and the way I look at we are doing Church today in North America and I highly reccomend it.
Simply titled "So You Don't Want To Go To Church Anymore" By Jake Colesen. It is a hard hitting book that speaks volumes into what is happening all around us.It takes us all back to what it is all about a personal relationship with Jesus, not programs or the need to keep feeding an institution.
P.S. Quigley is missing you...smiles.
