Paul wrote the Corinthian Christians to inform them of his plans to stay at Ephesus until Pentecost, “For a great door and effectual is opened unto me, and there are many adversaries.” 1 Corinthians 16:9.

Ephesus was the capital of the Roman Province of Asia. It was a great luxurious city with its greatest claim to fame being the Temple of Diana (Artemis), one of the seven wonders of the ancient world. The people were proud of the temple and it became a worship center for people of all faiths from many lands. It was a beautiful tourist attraction, visited by many who paid homage to Artemis in various forms. Its splendor also attracted multitudes of worshippers, though the worship there was egregiously corrupt. Among those who spent considerable time there were the professional exorcists. They were there to get rich by taking advantage of gullible believing people and to find new magical imposters and trickery to add to their repertoire of phony incantations. It was Show Business at its best!

There is something degrading about Churches and Christianity when it becomes show business. People who play games for show have no real love for their neighbor, the Church and no fear of God. Perhaps, if the witness of Christ is not what it should be, it is due to the fact that there is too much show business going on in houses of worship. Maybe it is because we are too preoccupied playing games, to busy acting, too busy trying to seen, trying to be a star. Some of us live lives of games confined to ideas and thoughts that are so trifling that we allow ourselves to sink into the quicksand of phoniness and pettiness; petty gossip, petty jealousy, petty envy, petty complaints, petty ostentations, which leaves no time for God’s business. The religion of the Ephesians was worse than the absence of it because it had become nothing more than Show Business.

But it is into this type of setting that God intervenes through the Apostle Paul. We note that Luke did not record that Paul performed miracles, but that God worked miracles through Paul in the name of Jesus. “God did extraordinary miracles through Paul, so that even handkerchiefs and aprons that had touched him were taken to the sick, and their illnesses were cured and the evil spirits left them.” Acts 19:11-12. Paul was merely the instrument through which God released His healing power. People would take Paul’s articles of clothing and carry them to the sick and they would be healed by touching them.

We remember the woman that was cured by touching Christ’s garment, but here in Ephesus were people being cured by touching Paul’s garments. Matthew tells us that Christ gave His apostles’ power against unclean spirits and against all types of sickness. Paul was empowered with God’s power. So great was it that it overflowed into the clothes he wore. There clothes were charged with the power of Paul’s personality, they became transmitters of his healing power.

But soon, these victories become a crisis. There are those who are so caught up in miracles, that they totally miss the Miracle Maker. What started out as a sincere effort to help the sick, became degraded. It became Show Business!

Now, I believe in God and I believe people were healed by touching Paul’s garments. But, I do not believe that any Tom, Dick and Harry can come along and promise folks that they can be healed by touching garments, radios, rabbit’s foot, holy cloths and other things that some of us think healing is all about. There is a distinction between authentic Christian Faith and Show Business.

The Seven sons of the Jewish high priest, Sceva, were in Show Business and they were there in Ephesus surveying around looking for a new act to add to their show. These itinerant professional exorcists (who apparently could not exorcise demons) discovered by observing the apostles that they could do wonderful works in the “name of Jesus.” They learned the “password” and their fortune were made. The password was “Jesus.” They would use Jesus’ name to get rich.

But Jesus was deadly serious when He told us “Not everyone who says to Me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ shall enter the kingdom of heaven, but he who does the will of My Father in heaven.” He reminds us that many will try to enter heaven by coming to Him and saying: we prophesied in your name, cast out demons in your name, and done many wonders in your name.” And then I will declare to them, ‘I never knew you; depart from me, you who practice lawlessness!’” Matthew 7:21-23. Jesus understood that there are those who are not in God’s business but Show Business. He knew that there are those who use His name as a magic formula; those who turn worship into a racket.

So Sceva’s sons added Jesus’ name to their list of tricks. These counterfeiters made their business going from place to place putting on a grand show. You know who they are. You have seen them. Our world is full of them and Jesus cautioned us because in the last days false prophets will come out of every crack and crevice and deceive a lot of folks. As Christians, we must stay on the alert because there are thousands of folks out to take advantage of us; trying to convince us they have a “special” relationship with God, a super-influence with God, an extraordinary persuasive means with God, a cannot fail block buster power that will get your prayers through to God. DO NOT FALL FOR IT!

Matthias Scheits' (c. 1630-1700) depiction of a demoniac attacking the seven sons of Sceva (front); in the background the Ephesians assemble and begin a riot.
Matthias Scheits' (c. 1630-1700) depiction of a demoniac attacking the seven sons of Sceva (front); in the background the Ephesians assemble and begin a riot.

The sons of Sceva were interested in making money. All of us know that we have to make money for a living, that is a given, but we had better be careful in what we choose to do to get the money for making our living.

The sons of Sceva kept a close eye on Paul and decided to make use of his method in their show. There is power in the name of Jesus and they thought all they had to do was mention His name and that would be sufficient to drive the demons out. They were looking for new material for their act and they found it, their fortune was made, the lottery was hit, or so they thought.

But I heard Jesus say the other day, “My sheep listen to my voice; I know them, and they follow me” (John 10:27) “the man who does not enter the sheep pen by the gate, but climbs in by some other way, is a thief and a robber” (John 10:1).

I see these men trying to emulate the practice of God’s anointed. They had heard the incantation work for Paul and were satisfied that they had found the perfect get rich quick scheme. To these magicians it was Show Business, but to Paul, it was God’s Business. When they uttered the words, “In the name of Jesus, whom Paul preaches, I command you to come out,” the demon said, “Jesus I know, and I know about Paul, but who are you?” Then the man who had the evil spirit jumped on them and overpowered them all. He gave them such a beating that they ran out of the house naked and bleeding.” Acts 19:13-16.

We have got to be careful how we play with God for His Gospel is nothing to play with. I hear Paul declaring to the church at Rome, “I am not ashamed of the gospel, because it is the power of God for the salvation of everyone who believes.”

I know that there are many claiming to be Christians who enjoy Show business, doing our own thing, writing our own plays. But I have learned something from Jesus. I have learned that God also is a playwright and that long before we were conceived; long before the mountains were brought forth or the earth and world were formed, God was already on the scene and He had already given us our role to play in life. But our problem is that we try to edit God’s plan.

We talk about the folks we do not like, the folks we can’t stand, folks we do not want to be bothered with, all the folks who get on our nerves. But I have learned that every now and then, God will intervene into our drama. Many times in life, the very people we can’t stand and don’t want to be bothered with, God will lift up to become our best friends. When those that we admired, those we put upon a pedestal, those we idolized; when they have forgotten about us and gone on about their own business, God brings those folks on stage that we did not like, to lend us a helping hand.

You see beloveds, in this play of life which we direct, we determine all the plays and we determine who the audience will be. We can let folks into our lives or we can shut them out. But in God’s grand play, there is no audience. God is the only Spectator. He knows what we are going to do before we do it. He knows where we have been and He knows where we are going.

And I hate to burst your pride bubble, but if you are out to make an impression, if you are out for show, if you are running around trying to fool folks, trying to run a game on God, trying to be a celebrity at God’s expense; you are can rehearse the part ever so well, you can put on all the airs that you want, you can pretend to your hearts desire, but in this play of life in which God is the Director, you have to live out the part. What you do to me, you will be held accountable. What I do to you, I will be accountable.

Christianity, beloveds, is more than an outward act, it means inner motive relentlessly revealing itself in the course of time by word and conduct. The Christian life is rooted in the faith and power of God through Jesus Christ. It is cultivated by discipline and worship and work, lest it becomes mere Hollywood. True Christians are not in show business, we are in God’s Business. We are not looking for prestige, wealth or fame but like Abraham, we are “looking forward to the city with foundations, whose architect and builder is God.”

You may go on in your drama, but one of these days, the curtains will come down and as it is written: ‘As surely as I live,’ says the Lord, ‘every knee will bow before me; every tongue will confess to God.’”

Excellent message RL. When I first became a believer, 31 years ago, I used to watch televangelists on TV. They were famous for sending out prayer cloths for a donation. It always bothered me. I think I had discernment even then when I saw these show business clowns. It is very sad indeed. But your message does encourage me to check my motives in my service to Christ. Good to hear from you. It's been awhile.

I can remember my Mother sending Oral Roberts five dollars every month from her sos. sec. check. He called her his prayer partner. I'm not sure but i think her soc. sec. check was only three hundred and some odd dollars. At one time i was so convinced that Jimmy Swaggart could take away my desire to smoke, by placing my hand on the TV screen, i did it and prayed with him. I am so happy to say that today i look to no man except God and my own will power. Thank you RevLady...Cheers

Very nice but a bit lengthy. I've been to Ephesus and it was anything but "show business." Not a vendor in sight which made the visit very spiritual. Thanks.

The demon said, “Jesus I know, and I know about Paul, but who are you?”

Honestly-I love when I read that line. It makes me laugh because of the 'fakers' that I have met through life and the demons even know they are fakers--pretending to be annointed by God. They have no idea who they are playing with--because without the one true God inside them--they are in for some trouble down the road. And worse--they will stand before the Lord and have to explain the betrayal.

One thing that I have learned greatly in this lifetime of mine is that I don't give a hoot any more of what others think of me and especially the 'holy trolls' who even the demons call out and know their games--I care what Jesus thinks of me because he knows me-my heart-my motives and he knows that I am in the God business--not the 'show-business.'

What I truly find awesome about the Lord is that he can take a broken down-broken spirited-nobody cares for-abandoned person who has been used up and discarded by the world of Holy Trolls--and he can make them into such a loving, giving, passionate-great servant and true witness to the other throw-away people who have lost faith in God due to the 'show business' people you speak about.

Jesus ROCKS! Every knee WILL bow...and I surely will after I am done doing my 'told you so' happy dance! lol

______

Pastor Saundra--I wanted to share something that happened to me--another amazing vision-shocking-but you do know the attacks I have had upon me. I have been keeping documentation and I wanted to share this with you because it was just amazing to me!! I also wanted to ask you a question. If the Lord has a specific calling for you--he will teach you yes? This below is what happened to me...and I was wondering if he was beginning to teach me about deliverance. I seriously awoke from this and asked him outloud. amazing!

JULY 15, 2011

Another visit from the Lord...

A demon had appeared this morning, taking me out of my peaceful sleep. This particular demon came in 'light' as to try to deceive me...it took on the body and face of someone that I love very much. Though it looked like my loved one--the energy around this demon told me exactly what and who it was....a far cry from the beautiful human being that this demon was trying to portray. The demon realized that I knew who it was and it had not tricked me in any way shape or form...and at that moment of its reliazation.. it stopped the 'game' and did very lewd horrible things at me...which it KNEW I would detest!

I commanded it to leave in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and it immediately stopped with its disgusting actions and seemed to have dropped down to the ground and froze in a laying down position...as if something had frozen it for that fleeting moment. It did not POOF and be gone as they normally do when I rebuke them.

I turned and left....feeling the presence of Jesus around me. Strangely, I have never had this happen before. The Lord told me to go back and place my hands on this heap of ? and place the blood of the Christ on it--all over it. I did not want to go back to that thing on the ground...but if you heard the Lord's voice and you wanted to please him--which I do with my whole heart and soul...well you just do it....regardless that you don't want to. You obey and I obeyed.

I walked back over to the demon and I placed my hands on it and I placed the blood of Christ all over it as I was instructed. I had no fear...no bad feelings while I was touching it...I woke up immediately and was shocked and amazed. My first words out of my mouth were these...

"JESUS...ARE YOU TEACHING ME TO BE ABLE TO CAST OUT SPIRITS FOR A MINISTRIES FOR YOU?"

Rev Lady, a great presentation with much information to consider. I see Holy Water and vials of Holy oil for sale that claim to be worth 3 times the price. I was communicating with Bro. Allen and out of the blue he mentioned that an honest and humble prayer over water by any one of Gods children is capable of cleansing the water the same as anyone who makes the claim, we need only apply our faith to oil for anointing the head of a sick person while praying over them, the oil will be as Holy as the ones heart who prays sincerely to have it blessed, no shipping or handling required, as believers we can bring forth the Lords blessings. I think you saw my post on facebook in regard to "buy yourself a plastic Jesus" from the movie "Cool Hand Luke" it was in regard to prayer and the importance of "things" like rosary beads. I remembered that movie and the era where there were magnetic figurines of Jesus and Mary stuck on dashboards that were steel back in the day, as well as rosaries hanging on the rear view mirrors. I asked my dad about why didn't we have them. His answer was much like yours, he told me it was what was in our hearts, not what was on the dashboard or in or pockets. I was young and sort of understood but years later as it seems to have come up today the 3rd time my mind is set to full understanding.

LS,

It has always been disconcerting to me as well. Those that use these methods may mean well, but nowhere in Scripture are we encouraged to use good luck charms, rabbit’s foot, so-called prayer clothes or anything else apart from our own personal faith in Christ Jesus, prayer, and obedience to receive God’s power. He acts according to His own purpose and good will for our lives.

EP,

I agree with you and time is running out. It is of paramount importance that we are about God’s business as never before. Help us Lord Jesus!

AE,

It is always and forever about looking to God, through Jesus Christ. God does not need TV’s, clothing or anything else to meet our needs.

JJ,

Lengthy, I am told, is SEO friendly. I rejoice in the knowledge that modern Ephesus is no longer as it was in Paul’s day. All glory to God!

GW,

“What I truly find awesome about the Lord is that he can take a broken down-broken spirited-nobody cares for-abandoned person who has been used up and discarded by the world of Holy Trolls--and he can make them into such a loving, giving, passionate-great servant and true witness to the other throw-away people who have lost faith in God due to the 'show business' people you speak about.” AMEN, AMEN!

All glory to God for His goodness and mercy. I am a witness for He took the pieces of my broken life and shaped me into an instrument of His will and service. Like you, I have no concern for what others, who know absolutely nothing of my heart and soul, may think of me. I will not be standing before anyone to give an account except Christ Jesus on “that day.” All glory to God sister of mine!

Regarding the demon dream, I am not helpful as it falls outside my training and experience. If you feel strongly that it was of the Lord, then I would venture to support the thought that God may be equipping you for a special ministry.

DM,

Me too DM, me too!

Dusty,

I agree with both you and Bro. Allen. It is not God’s need but man’s for reasons that baffle me.

I remember watching televangelists on television, and being impressed how God allowed them to heal people. Of course, now I know that many of those people are faking, and some are just doing their "miracles" for their own fame.

It's sad, but I have also grown with the fear that any kind of fame equals corruption. Though I know this is not always true, and not all televangelists are corrupt, I still look upon success with worry.

Power and fame corrupt people. Of course, that wouldn't happen if we remembered to keep God in our midst and to always recognize that He provides for us. We do not succeed because of our own means.

It's been a while since my last visit, but I think I finally cleared up the problem with my emails. I wasn't getting notifications! :)

Ama, so happy to connect with you once again. I have missed you, but then I am not around as often anymore due to other pursuits and personal life challenges.

There is much to be concerned about regarding wealth. According to the Survey of Consumer Finances, the wealthiest 1 percent of families owns roughly 34.3% of the nation's net worth, the top 10% of families owns over 71%, and the bottom 40% of the population owns way less than 1%. It seems that those that have are not willing to share with those that do not have to any significant degree.

May the Lord have mercy on our souls!

Rev Lady, This is deep, powerful, thought provoking, necessary and true! Much to my chagrin I have experienced this on many levels… In seeking ways to spread The Gospel I/we discovered much show business … In an attempt to be somewhat liberal and “out of the box!” We supported a few who were interested in becoming “stars!” in music ministry… Initially we were on the same page the intent was to “go ye therefore” and minister to the saved and draw those that were lost…. Message in song can be powerful and life changing! But on many occassions the message became secondary and the performance and titillation of emotions became the target…. This is not to say that this is always the case. But to affirm the Truth that you have audaciously stated!

A seducing Spirit can mimic The Holy Spirit and make it appear that one is being drawn to The Lord! One truly must consecrate themselves for worship and service in the Lord. Discernment is key! To make sure that the motive is pure; Not to entertain but to "Worship The Lord in Spirit and in TRUTH!" and allow The Holy Spirit to minister to others through you by bring a portable vessel for HIM… A seducing spirit does not induce the transforming Power of the Lord but bondage…!

As you well stated:”I know that there are many claiming to be Christians who enjoy Show business, doing our own thing, writing our own plays. But I have learned something from Jesus. I have learned that God also is a playwright and that long before we were conceived; long before the mountains were brought forth or the earth and world were formed, God was already on the scene and He had already given us our role to play in life. But our problem is that we try to edit God’s plan.” Amen! & Amen! I fear the Lord!

I think it is important that our main audience be and “Audience of One!” God knows our heart and it is true! Whether we are alone in His Presence or in the presence of a few or many we much remain focused on God’s agenda! I think lt is beneficial to whisper continual unspoken prayers while in the midst of worship that the Lord may have His WAY! The volume of the worship does not determine that The Lord is pleased! “Only What We Do For Christ Will Last!” I am definitely in ministry for “GOD’S BUSINESS!”

May our Heavenly Father Bless & Keep You! Thank you for sharing, In HIS Love, Grace, Joy, Peace & Blessings!

Ghost Whisper 77 7 months ago

Thanks for the 'trusted' comment Revlady. I do trust you--which I can not say for many down here. This was not a dream but a spiritual vision again-big difference-yes--definetely the Lord! :) Jesus is doing amazing things in my life and is teaching me much! Oh I am very excited!!!

I know the Lord in a different way than many and those with very limited discernment of seducing spirits would never understand comments such as mine.

Seducing spirits don't make you turn away from your sin and love the Lord with all of your heart. :) Seducing spirits trick a person into thinking that they are above another spiritually and that they have studied enough to have some special 'gift' due to phd's and showbusiness. They are called the 'self annointed and self appointed' ones that even the demons ask.."Who are you?" I have met millions of them in my life time and they stick out like a sore thumb, sadly.

That being said, all members of the church, great or small are important. The weak shall be made strong. The Lord tells me that I only need a pure heart for him-which I do-those who are truly annointed are chosen by Jesus directly and directed by Jesus ONLY--not self annointed and self appointed for show business.

Just makes sense to me now of how so many can do and say and think such meanspirited things against others and more so, they do it in the name of our Lord. Very sad. Ahhhh he has taught me another lesson tonight.

Delusions of their own minds and spiritual haughty ways which stop them from having the true discernment as a child of God or acknowledging another child of God.

Jesus frowns upon spiritual arrogance, haughty behaviors and even the'show business' types who often get so caught up in their own show business, self annointed special gifts, learned studies...that they are deceived by those same seducing spirits that blind them from their very own behaviors. Just makes sense to me now.

Thank you so much for your respect and your answers Pastor. You have been a great help to me.

DKO, GW,

It fills my heart with joy to know that God has His instruments who are seriously in His business and doing all we can within the human limits imposed, to spread the Good News about Him and His salvation.

Though there are many false players claiming to be in the business of God, He always has and always will have His true remnant. We support and strengthen each other for the battle as as the Holy Spirit empowers us according to His will (trinity-Father God).

We reach out to all in the name of Jesus, praying that they relinguish show business with God's business. May our lives preach for us.

Thank you my sisters for your sermonettes, if you will. I prospered greatly and I am sure others will benefit as well.

Your concluding paragraph really says it all! May we only play to an audience of one and seek to please Him alone.

Inner motive really is everything. I see how this works in the larger picture of the televised church and how it can work in us as individuals.

On a personal note I do find myself asking myself what my real motives are in whatever I am doing and it is a situation by situation process to clarify that.

May we die daily to any desire we would have to use God in any way to exalt or prosper ourselves.

This was another wonderful Hub, what you said was true, most people today go into the ministry because it brings forth adulation and praise with others and respect within their community. The Gospel has made a lot of people prominent within our society. A big plus is if you can have some type of supernatural phenomenon done in their mist he or she will become even more distinguished within the church community.

Most of what we are seeing is show business, this is why there’s such a high divorce rate in the pulpit. Because, ministry has become nothing more than show business as usual. If they really meant what they preach, you would not be seeing so many of the preachers today in scandals. So I would agree with you most not all are in ministry now because it is now nothing but a means to an end in the get rich quick scheme, trying to get others to believe in the mansion and pie in the sky doctrine.

However, this is what they don’t know, God will use a person to be a blessing to someone else, who has a heart for God and that person will receive his or her miracle, and will get the blessing. The person that God had used to bring the blessing will end up in hell. What many people fail to understand is that God can use you or anybody; however that does not mean that the person He’s using is in good standing with God, it just means that the believing person who sought God through the preacher, prayer was answered.

The true test of whether or not a person is a Christian, in my opinion, is the love test. I’m not talking about love that is afraid to tell you, you’re wrong. There are some Christians that will not tell a person that they are wrong when they sin. But I’m talking about the love that is not out for financial gain, that don’t care if you don’t support their ministry they are going to tell you the truth. In addition, the person that is going to show the type of love, that requires obedience to the Word of God. Being obedient unto the Lord shows I love you for two reasons. Number one, I have a relationship with Jesus and I love Jesus. Number two; if I love Jesus, then I will love you to much to neglect my responsibility in feeding His is sheep. Isn’t that what Jesus ask Peter “Do you Love Me Feed My Sheep. Not get money, feed my sheep. Great Hub RevLady.
