Theology of Hope

Any discussion of hope requires first, knowledge of God’s character and belief in His power to overrule present circumstances regardless of how dismal they may become. We must know how God has worked in the past and we must not deny the present midnight hour. Both are real and both are parts of every Christian’s life journey.

We know that many Christians have lost sight of their God, have become pessimistic and lost hope. Many individuals and churches have succumbed to the idea that paganism and the secular trend of our society is irreversible. Many sincere believers have adopted a sort of fatalistic attitude based on a flawed eschatology that hinders them from considering the thought that our God is POWER. But to dismiss God is to embrace hopelessness, for God is the answer to hopelessness.

We begin by acknowledging the truth of our times. We are living in darkness and consequently, many have discovered their own souls have become increasingly darken. It may not be in some moral demise sense, but rather in the loss of divine hope. Without hope, the soul becomes dark because of futility, despair and hopelessness. Despair nullifies any ray of light within the soul. To lose hope is to disconnect from God and His power. Thus, we become practical agnostics and live a life of defeat.

I have made the discovery that one can lament without losing hope. If one loses hope, one is not in touch with God. Staying in relationship with God is crucial and we can only navigate the journey through the darkness by acknowledging these two polarities: reality is dark (our lament), but God is powerful (our hope).

To possess hope is not to close our eyes to radical evil in the world, but we have learned how to take that evil into the kingdom of God residing in our being and allow God to transmute it into the good.

Christianity realizes that to maintain hope in the midst of seeming hopelessness; we must connect with a Source that can accomplish the needed change. Only God can renew and redeem. Only God can take care of all the dark places. Only God can change people, societies, and nations. Only God can perform the impossible; it is His specialty.

So, what I am suggesting is that it is possible to lament the darkness in the world and in our individual lives, as Jeremiah cried over and lamented the destruction of Israel, without losing hope. Paul lamented the church and human condition without losing hope. As Henri Nouwen says, “Those who dream of better things are not those who hate what is now, but who love the present enough to seek its transformation.”

Christians live beyond the tangible seen realities of earth life. The spiritual dimension of life is real but divinely invisible. It is crucial for our life function, as we know it. The spiritual is critical to the life of the Christian and is the invisible glue that binds us together as the body of Christ and offers a hope for tomorrow. Without the spirit working properly, our spiritual energy wanes according to Proverbs, soul sickness develops. Hope deferred makes the heart grow sick (13:12). It is demanded of us by the Christian faith to understand and live the spiritual life. The concepts of trust, sacrifice, unity, hope are hallmark characteristics of Christians. Hope is a spiritual element many have recognized before:

Augustine of Hippo said, “Hope has two beautiful daughters. Their names are anger and courage; anger at the way things are, and courage to see that they do not remain the way they are.”

Hope is essential for the Christian journey, for forward motion. Martin Luther King, Jr., said, “We must accept finite disappointment, but never lose infinite hope.” To hope then, means to be prepared moment by moment for the solution to appear, and yet not to become desperate if there is no solution in the immediate.

Hope to a Christian is like electricity to light. When we switch on a lamp, it provides light, which enables us to see in the dark, but the electricity itself goes unnoticed. However, without the electricity, there would be no light. The electricity is absolutely essential. So it is with hope. Hope is the invisible spiritual fuel that propels us to future goals; the invisible energy that empowers us to believe in tomorrow, and to persevere against difficult circumstances.

Biblical Hope

Hope, in the Bible is God’s revelation of Himself to humanity. He gives hope through His promises. Biblical hope is God centered, that is, God is the objective Source of hope. Thus, we must return to the earlier statement that there is no hope without God. Biblical hope is inseparable from faith in God. Because of what He has done in the past, particularly in preparing for the coming of Christ, and because of what He is now doing through Christ, the Christian dares to expect future blessings at present invisible;

"He has delivered us from such a deadly peril, and he will deliver us. On him we have set our hope that he will continue to deliver us". 2 Corinthians 1:10.

God’s goodness cannot be exhausted. The best is yet to come. Our hope is increased as we reflect on the activities of God in Scriptures:

"Be joyful in hope, patient in affliction, faithful in prayer" Romans 12:12, and "For everything that was written in the past was written to teach us, so that through endurance and the encouragement of the Scriptures we might have hope"(15:4).

Christ in God is the hope of future glory:

To them God has chosen to make known among the Gentiles the glorious riches of this mystery, which is Christ in you, the hope of glory (Colossians 1:27).

Hope is revealed throughout Biblical history and the promises God makes in His word. Faith and love are always included in the concept of hope in Scriptures. Hope says, “God can do all things,” faith says, “Thy will be done,” love says, “Christ crucified.”

Our only hope is in God. We are beyond any illusion of human repair. Hope is spirit respiration in prayer. It settles the conviction that God is able and that nothing is impossible for Him.

Hope laments the earth’s condition but does not forget His people, regardless of how difficult their surroundings have become or how far His people have wandered away. If individual Christians and our society are to be changed, it must begin within the household of faith. God has not abandoned His people.

Christianity in America, despite its profoundly countercultural components, is far from becoming extinct. Fears about its waning influence are understandable and cannot be denied. But, to assume its slow demise is premature and not supported by Biblical principles. Granted, the church needs to experience an inner healing at the level of the spirit and a modified understanding of itself and the nature of God and His dealing in history before it can again engage the culture and carry out effective ministry, yet, “…on this rock I will build my church, and the gates of Hades will not overcome it..” Matthew 16:18.

God fills us with joy and peace, despite our circumstances. He sent His Son who conquered death by rising again from the dead. We know that we will share Jesus’ glory in eternity. This is a promise of God which will be kept. This is our hope.

It is our hope that consoles us amidst the tribulations and calamities and iniquities of the present, it is our hope that makes life worth living, and it is our hope that gives the weary spirit the wings of a dove. It is our living hope that speaks to the world of the omnipotence of God, through Jesus Christ and propagates His promise that "the best is yet to come" for truly, “No eye has seen, no ear has heard, no mind has conceived what God has prepared for those who love him” 1 Corinthians 2:9.

The whole idea behind resurrection hope is the hope of the believer. It is hope which sustains and carries each believer through life. As Peter declared, “Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! In his great mercy he has given us new birth into a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead” 1 Peter 1:3.

And now,

“May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy SpiritRomans 15:13. AMEN!

AMEN! What clarification you have given here, Reverend Lady, on the meaning of "lament."

“I have made the discovery that one can lament without losing hope.” “reality is dark (our lament), but God is powerful (our hope).” This is wonderfully written.

My father loved to say, "I can do all things through Christ Who strengthens me." These are words I should often meditate on, when I start to lose sight of Who is in control of my life.

I WILL "Be joyful in hope, patient in affliction, faithful in prayer" Romans 12:12.

God continue to bless you, and please know that you are appreciated.

"This hope we have as an anchor of the soul, both sure and steadfast, and which enters the Presence behind the veil, where the forerunner has entered for us, even Jesus, having become High Priest forever according to the order of Melchizedek." Heb.6.19, 20

What an outstanding entrance we have gained through Jesus into the Holy of Holies, to which our hope is anchored... He is unmoveable and we have an unshakable assurrance in ALL that He has done on our account.

Amen Sister, thank you for your heart and let's rejoice together in His glory shared with us. Blessings, St.L.

VKA,

I feel uplifted in spirit to hear of your father's words. They are like a rock for the Christian that keeps us steady, unmovable, and totally reliant upon His power.

With you, I WILL "Be joyful in hope, patient in affliction, faithful in prayer"

Saintatlarge,

"What an outstanding entrance we have gained through Jesus into the Holy of Holies, to which our hope is anchored... He is unmoveable and we have an unshakable assurrance in ALL that He has done on our account. "

AMEN, AMEN! What a glorious statement of God's truth and what was accomplished by our Lord's death and resurrection. How richly and truly, truly blessed are the saints of God.

May the grace of our Lord abide with you both. Thank you for sharing your insightful thoughts and words of encouragement that strengthens my soul.

Oh yes, RevLady, that point about lamenting without losing hope is so true. We are natural and thus sadness and sorrow, even grief are part of our human makeup. We can't ignore that we feel these things. If we look closely, even the Lord at times expressed such emotions towards us because He is supernatural - not unnatural.

As long as our Spirit is seeking Him for answers, even in our darkest hours, nothing can steer us from that truly blessed hope of resurrection, which is the hope point of Christian life. Thanks for getting my day off to a glorious start! Peace!

A M Werner,

It is true that we do lament and it is consistent not only with with biblical principles, but biblical characters.

I think it is very significant for Christians to fully appreciate our "humanness." God created us and expects our humanness to manifest itself in the natural ways that result from that humanness, i.e., grief, sorrow, righteous indignation and so forth. To deny our humanity is to deny life.

I agree with you that certainly the Son of Man "at times expressed such emotions towards us because He is supernatural - not unnatural."

Indeed, He experienced the gamete of emotions from weeping, sorrow, lamentations over Jerusalem, righteous indignation with the Pharisees, love, compassion and so forth. We all experience the same emotions disciplined by the context of our Faith. Even Paul acknowledged we would grieve, but that we do not grieve as those without hope.

We rejoice in the "blessed hope of resurrection, which is the hope point of Christian life." AMEN!! Thank you AM.

Itakins, I lift up praises to our Lord that you found something in this message that lifted your spirit. Your visit lifted mine. All glory to God!!

RevLady this is a powerful Hub filled with much truth. You had my fullest of attention until you reached the point where you mention:

"God fills us with joy and peace, despite our circumstances. He sent his son who conquered death by rising again from the dead. We know that we will share Jesus' glory in eternity. This is a promise of God which will be kept. This is our hope."

RevLady maybe I'm not understanding the terminology of the words being exspressed, but I believe that This our "FAITH" not our "Hope" for we "Believe in Faith" that whatever God promises, he must and will keep, for God can do no other.

In the love of God and His Promises.

Dave,

A strong faith must, of necessity, be inclusive of a living hope.

"Now faith is the substance of things HOPED for, the evidence of things not seen. Hebrews 11:1.

It is our hope that supports our faith and vice versa. Paul discusses it extensively i.e. "if we hope for what we do not yet have, we wait for it patiently." Romans 8:25, and "May the God of HOPE fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in him, so that you may overflow with HOPE by the power of the Holy Spirit. Romans 15:13.

Mister, "Quill," Maita, Heart4theword,

God bless you all for stopping by on this Lord's day and leaving your appreciated thoughts.

Blessings in His name,

Forever His,

This is excellent. So much good stuff here. And one can never promote hope--genuine hope--enough. The following is so well said:

"I have made the discovery that one can lament without losing hope. If one loses hope, one is not in touch with God. Staying in relationship with God is crucial and we can only navigate the journey through the darkness by acknowledging these two polarities: reality is dark (our lament), but God is powerful (our hope)."

I'd argue, rather strongly by pointing to David's Psalms of lament, that something mysterious happens when we vent our sorrow, disappointment, discouragment at God. Something in that process keeps our eyes on God, reminding us of who he is & who we are, which ought to always stir hope.

Thank you for a great piece of work.

RevLady profile image

RevLady Hub Author 2 years ago

I agree Ken.

I believe and know really, that God appreciates us in relationship with Him. He is our Father and there is nothing that we should fail to discuss with Him. And as you stated with much divine clarity, there is something in this process that keeps us ever aware of who He is and who we are that should stir our hope.

Your visits are always refreshing to my spirit. Thank you for the wisdom of your comments. I feel I have grown a little more.

Truly it is when we lose our hope, true hope in and of the Lord Jesus that our souls become a dark place to live. But once hope has taken hold of our souls, we can never truly be hopeless again! For the Spirit of the Living God is ceaselessly whispering His truth in our ear and reminding us, "What about God?" It is a whisper that has carried me through some incredibly dark valleys. However, no matter how dark the valley has been God's Hope was ALWAYS shining like a light to make a way for me when I saw no way. God is the infallible One not us. And He will never lie to me/us. He will Never leave us nor forsake us. It's our hope-light in the darkness of this world's circumstance.

This is an incredible hub, speaking of an incredible forever gift from God, Hope...and truly it is a living Hope, our Lord Jesus Christ. Thank you and bless you RevLady

I always so look forward to reading your hub...I love the hope-light that always brings your readers to a closer understanding of our God!

Whidbeywriter, yes, we rejoice in His resurrection that assumes all believers of theirs and the promise of life eternal. All glory to God for His loving mercy!

UlrikeGrace, truly, in the midnight hour, we proclaim that Jesus Christ is our Light and Hope. In faith and hope, we trust God in peaceful as well as challenging times of darkness; we believe He will work in us to draw us closer to Him and one another. It is indeed an "incredible forever gift from God."

Thank you my sisters in Christ Jesus, who died and rose again to die no more, and because He lives, we shall live also. All glory to God!!

What a Beautiful rendering of the idea of hope. I love how you placed hope in the middle of lament and shined a light on it revealing to us all the perfect character of hope itself. For hope is not blind to lament, or despair, or pain or suffering - rather it is right there in the middle of it all cracking open the blinds that shine light on a way for the heart to express vision for tomorrow and uncover a way to walk for today....Great hub dear sister.

Let His light keep shining through you!

Well Pastor DeBorrah,

Your praise to our Lord who is worthy of all our exaltation makes my spirit rejoice, Your support for my writing ministry really was on time today. My spirit needed a boost as I have depleted even my reserve energy in Holy Week activities and ministry. Death is no respecter of holy seasons.

But there is something about His praises, especially when shared in by other saints that lifts me to the highest heaven. Thank you dear heart for ministering to my spiritual needs this day. God has never failed to send into my life just the medicine I need when I need it most. He is indeed the Great Physician.

From the heart in love and thanksgiving!

Your wonderful writings have made me feel so much better today. We all go through tough, demanding times and setbacks, and my partner and I have been and still are going through one for the past year. But I never give up hope. I pray to The Lord and have faith that our lives will become as we hope, and that the present problems we're facing will become a distant memory. It's true.

I do all things through Christ, who strengthens me.

One of the discoveries I have made in life is that it goes in cycles. What is challengin right now, will eventually fade away, but return in a different form on another day. Such is life.

Like you, I have faith in our triumph over each challenge that confronts us. We believe in the triumph of our Lord over the powers of this world and our hope is in His promises of an eternal new life in Him.

God bless and keep you dear friend,

Amen, I love your writings, not only that---I know the foundation and when you truly know the foundation, there is no limit to what can be accomplished through Christ who strengthens me in all that I encounter.

Praise is a part of my daily ritual. Waking up in the morning is a blessing because there are so many who do not.

Keep on writing, don't stop. There are many who will not pick up The Word but surf the internet religiously. Perhaps they will stumble across your writing and check to see if it is true what you quote. That's a start for the lost. Seeking Jesus is about the easiest task one can preform but why are there so many who have passed Him by?
