Historical Witnesses to Truth

“But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.” Acts 1:8.

Giving witness to the truth of the Law formed an essential part of the Judeo-Christian faith. In later Judaism, however, witness to the truth became associated with a readiness to die for that truth. For example, in the Apocrypha we read that the priest Eleazar was prepared to die a glorious death for the holy laws when confronted with an order from King Antiochus’s officials to perform sacrifice (2 Maccabees 6:24-28).

In the Old Testament, the people of Israel were the primary witnesses, but the prophets in a special sense were witnesses with a special commission. “Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, before you were born I set you apart; I appointed you as a prophet to the nations.” Jeremiah 1:5.

In the New Testament the Church was the witness that was to take the Gospel to the whole world, but like the prophets, the apostles were special witnesses, since they were witnesses not only to Christ’s teaching and works, but also from their own personal experience of His Resurrection. And, they received special authority from Christ, who Himself was the ultimate Witness.

In the Johannine literature (Gospel of John) we get the sense of missionary witness to the truth by Jesus and His disciples. For example, when responding to Pilate, Jesus said, “You are right in saying I am a king. In fact, for this reason I was born, and for this I came into the world, to testify to the truth. Everyone on the side of truth listens to me.” John 18:37. Furthermore, John gives us the clear sense that this witness was sealed in “water and blood.”

“Instead, one of the soldiers pierced Jesus' side with a spear, bringing a sudden flow of blood and water. The man who saw it has given testimony, and his testimony is true. He knows that he tells the truth, and he testifies so that you also may believe” John 19:34-35.

“For there are three that testify: the Spirit, the water and the blood; and the three are in agreement.” 1 John 5:8.

When Jesus ascended, the witness continued through the Spirit of God and the Spirit bore witness concerning Christ and spoke through the mouths of Christians in their hour of crisis. The sacrificial and expiating nature of Christ’s death, and those of the prophets, is vividly expressed in Hebrews, where we are told Christians are to: “resist unto blood” striving against sin. (12:4).

Early Church Persecutions

Not long after Jesus’ ascension, persecution arose against both Jews and Gentiles, with the result that many of those who bore faithful witness experienced physical attacks and even death. Deacon Stephen and James, the brother of John were two of the earliest witnesses who suffered the extreme penalty for witnessing Christ. Of course, others followed including the Apostles Peter and Paul and many of lesser fame. Those who so suffered became “witnesses” to Christ in a special sense which led the Church to accord them a special place in its tradition; these are they who had given the ultimate by faithful obedience unto death.

We know that during this period, the profession of Christianity was illegal and Christians were subject to execution at any time. Christians became increasingly hated by the urban mobs in cities where Christian communities had become established. Thus, by the end of the second century, as the early witnesses to the faith sealed with their own blood their testimony, the suffering, witness, judgment and ultimate triumph merged together in the single concept of martyrdom. Witnessing to Christ’s Gospel, imitation of His passion and apocalyptic hopes all formed part of the martyr’s aspiration.

In Revelation, the idea of martyrdom was fairly well developed. Apostle John, the only apostle who allegedly escaped a violent death, records Christians had gained victory because of the “blood of the Lamb and by the word of their testimony; they did not love their lives so much as to shrink from death.” (12:11).

Detailed Acts of the Martyrs in the form of letters of survivors to other churches are preserved by Eusebius in his Ecclesiastical History . It records the martyrdoms of Polycarp, Bishop of Smyrna and of the terrible fate of the Christians at Lyons who were scourged, branded, and taken to the amphitheater to “entertain” the crowd during a Roman holiday by being thrown to wild beasts. It also details the tremendous faith and martyrdom of the slave girl Blandina who endured terrible torture rather than betray fellow Christians. The Ecclesiastical History form one of the amazing epics of early Christianity.

Martyrdom Today

From the time Christ was sent to the cross, there began the persecution of Christians which will never end until His coming again. Christ Himself told us: “Remember the words I spoke to you: ‘No servant is greater than his master.’ If they persecuted me, they will persecute you also.” John 15:20.

Persecution of Christians continues to show compelling evidence of its existence today.

It is a well-known and enduring characteristic of the Church of Christ: it is a Church of Martyrs and every true Christian who takes the stand: live or die, survive or perish, for the faith will suffer persecution in some form. There is no such thing as Christians without physical, spiritual, or emotional battle scars, marks of the crucifixion.

Some of us living in a country with freedom of religion may not be aware of the Christian persecution and martyrdom taking place in other countries today. According to Paul Marshall, in his book, Their Blood Cries Out , millions of Christians around the world suffer imprisonment, abuse and even death because of their faith. Many Americans are not aware of their horror stories.

Yet, we do know that it cost heavily to be a disciple of Christ. It will cost us some marks, some scars, even death. There Are No Exemptions. All soldiers in the army of the Lord are at risk of becoming a causality of war. Christ did not invite us to an excursion but an execution, death to ourselves, death to sin, death to the world and death for our faith. He challenged us to take up our cross, let the dead bury the dead, cut off offending eyes or hands or feet and let’s go fishing for men. In this world, we will suffer persecution and tribulations. The kind of service that does not cost anything is not worth anything for His Kingdom.

We ought to have some deep scars, some physical, psychological or spiritual wounds of war inflicted by a hostile and resistant world.

- Joseph's brothers hated him and sold him into slavery.
- Daniel's fellow governors hated him and attempted to kill him.
- The priests of baal hated Elijah and Jezebel swore to kill him.
- David’s own son plotted to kill him.
- Herodias hated John the Baptist and precipitated his beheading.
- The Pharisees and the Judaizers hated Paul with a burning passion and forty men took an oath they would fast until they saw Paul dead.

Jesus was public enemy number one in His day. But He refused to compromise, appease, conciliate, popularize. I hope we remember that the next time we so smugly sing:

To that old rugged cross I will ever be true,
Its shame and reproach gladly bear;

Though the argument has circulated that times are better now, humanity more civil and the church is in better standing so that we need not suffer as our forerunners. The truth is that times were never darker. Never has Satan been in fuller control. Christians are an alien influence and a minority group in an evil and pagan world. If we, the Church, the Body of Christ, are acceptable to this present age, then may God have mercy on us all.

Famous Last Words of Christian Martyrs

Stephen the first Christian Martyr, as he was being stoned to death by the Pharisees:

“Forgive them Lord, they don't know what they do. Lord Jesus, receive my spirit!”

James, the brother of John, the first apostle to suffer after the martyrdom of Stephen.  His arrester was so moved with compassion that as John went to his execution; he stepped forward and confessed to be a Christian of his own accord. As they were led to the chopping block the man begged John’s forgiveness. John turned to him and said, “Peace be to thee, brother;” and kissed him. Both were beheaded together, A.D. 36.

Polycarp gives his famous response -- “Eighty and six years have I now served Christ, and he has never done me the least wrong: How then can I blaspheme my King and my Savior?”

Henry Vos, “If I had twin heads, they should all be off for Christ.”

Castilla Rupea, “Though you throw my body down off this steep hill, yet will my soul mount upwards again.”

John Buisson, “I shall have a double jail delivery: out of my sinful flesh and out of the loathsome dungeon I have long lain in.”

Carpenter, “All Bavaria is not as dear to me as my wife and children, but, for Christ’s sake, I gladly forsake them.”

John Huss, pastor of Prague, was arrested, condemned, and sentenced to be burned by a church council in 1415, prayed, “In Thee, O Lord, do I put my trust; let me never be ashamed.”

“When he opened the fifth seal, I saw under the altar the souls of those who had been slain because of the word of God and the testimony they had maintained. They called out in a loud voice, ‘How long, Sovereign Lord, holy and true, until you judge the inhabitants of the earth and avenge our blood?’ Then each of them was given a white robe, and they were told to wait a little longer, until the number of their fellow servants and brothers who were to be killed as they had been was completed.” Revelation 6:9-10.

These are the precise topics we should explore more often as a group of believers, whom are moving toward the ever after days. Beautiful companion illustrations you found. American Christians need to be made aware of the persecutions in India, China and Russia. These places are increasingly succumbing to Islam and its murderous administration against infidels.

God is lighting the lamp for which you hold out in front of us. Strength be with you, wisdom flow from you finger tips. God Bless S.W.

JM,

We do need to be aware and do some serious praying for our persecuted brothers and sisters all over the world as well as support programs that are trying to save them.

If we Americans are unaware of the persecution that is all around us, which we are, then it speaks volumes about our so called faith. Christians are called to action, not mere words and comfy works. May the Lord have mercy on our souls.

Thanks JM for the affirmation and encouragment.

REVLADY, awesome hub, great words coming through on this, the persecution world wide today can be compared to that as the days of the early church. American Christians need to see this, we have been protected so long but it is about to be over in the USA, we too are being subject to persecutions maybe at a different level but they are there. Thanks for bringing this to the pages here so all may see.

MA,

I concur that it is good for us to stay tuned to what in happening to the Body of Christ worldwide, even here in the US in its various forms. I think it will help to strengthen us in our convictions or put us to shame and send us back to the mercy seat of God.

Love, peace and joy in Him, our first Martyr.

"There is no such thing as Christians without physical, spiritual, or emotional battle scars, marks of the crucifixion...Christ did not invite us to an excursion but an execution, death to ourselves, death to sin, death to the world and death for our faith"

Oh how we need to hear this. We are so soft in these matters.

It seems as well that the church actually grows under persecution.

I don't think it is something anyone wants to experience yet so necessary and inevitable.

He endured the cross because of the great joy set before Him as so should we.

Beautiful and necessary hub Sister.

RevLady profile image

RevLady Hub Author 19 months ago

Tamarajo,

It does appear that we have become soft in matters of faith that might threaten our life. It suggests however, that many of us value our own lives more than we value our Lord.

Yes, the early Church grew under severe persecutions. For each one martyred hundreds more, whose lives were changed by the sacrificial witness of the martyred saints, joined the Jesus movement. Today, we do witness this kind of whole hearted faith and willingness to suffer the extreme penalty for Christ that would draw people into the faith as it did in apostolic times.

I agree that sacrificing one’s life is not something any us would desire for ourselves. But, for the faithful, it is not about “ourselves.” It is about Jesus Christ and Him crucified and obedience to His commands. The human Jesus did not desire His ordeal, but clearly understood that it was not about Him or His preferences, it was being obedient to the will of the Father.

And it was this same attitude that compelled the Christian martyrs. They did not love their lives so much as to shy away from the calling, even unto death. Their love for Christ far exceeded their love of the physical body which decays daily anyway.

I rejoice in your visit and thank you for the insightful comments.

Love, peace and joy in Him who was, is and ever shall be Lord of lords and King of kings.

Saundra - We believers in Jesus Christ have it so easy in affluent North America. Your words ought to be a reminder of the historic reality that we have mostly escaped, though that could rapidly change at any time.

What a powerful, much needed challenge: "Jesus was public enemy number one in His day. But He refused to compromise, appease, conciliate, popularize. I hope we remember that the next time we so smugly sing:

Even as I write, there are those laying down their lives for their Savior. It reminds me that I need to pray more for them. Also, as things heat up here in America, it may not be long until we are asked to give up our lives for the Savior. Thanks for bringing attention to this important topic.

Stars,

Yes, according to tradition, Peter was executed on an upside down cross as he felt unworthy to die in the same manner as his Lord. What demonstrated love for Jesus!

LG,

As tensions build, Christians may be called to the extreme test of faith as you said. This, then, should be a time of reflection and self-examination to see if we are in the faith.

RevLady: To suffer for Christ and for what He teaches, is not easy, but every true Christian must be willing if asked to lay down his or her life that Christ Jesus might be raised up in glory, even to death, for death is merely a continuation of our spiritual walk with God.

Your hub today has moved my heart to tears Reverend Lady. Being a true follower of Christ, openly, this day-and-age – any day – is not an easy road. But if we truly love Him, we are compelled to speak and to be. The world today, the workplace in particular, expects that we should all be “politically correct,” that means not to speak of our belief in Christ our Savior.

I agree with you, RevLady, that times are darker. Christians are the minority in this “evil and pagan world,” and I pray that God may have mercy on us all.

The belief of many Christians today, out of fear of being branded and out-casted, is that our beliefs are our own and should be kept to ourselves. Meaning we are not to witness or make known who we are, who we represent. But we ARE to make known Whose we are; we are to let the world know Whom we serve - a Living God; a God that gave His life so that we might live.

I, too, wholeheartedly pray that I NEVER be ashamed!

I thank our Lord for your writings, RevLady. Keep His Words coming.

Much love and BIG hugs, in Christ Jesus,

VKA

DM, VKA,

I agree with you both that the road Jesus walked that we too must walk is not easy. This is why He told us to “count the cost” before committing to become His disciple. When we decided that we had no life without Him, we were compelled to discipleship. He now lives in us and us in Him which is what gives us true life.

This, I believe is what the Apostle Paul tells us in his writings. So, in a sense, even if we must lay down our life for Him (which means being willing to die for our fellow man as well), we are but glorifying Him by surrendering the earth life He gave us, back to Him. The spiritual life continues in Gloryland.

All glory to God!

Love, joy and peace in Him who is our Life.

Rev Lady a timely message but one worthy of discerning. I just witnessed a hub of several fighting each other and all claiming foul! as if they had given up something in the debate while being boisterous and hiding behind their keyboards between hurling defamatory slurs at one another, using the word "hate" toward each other, I got a complaint via email on how poorly this person was being treated. It was an attempt to draw me into the childish spat. I was I suppose, to throw my two cents in and ignored it all. As I read this hub I went to your link that was the Maccabees tune

'If you've got no kind words to say, then you should say nothing more at all.'

I returned to the hub and yelled "wedgie" and left a link to that song. I find it laughable that folks think they have suffered by a simple excommunication from a hub, and maybe the loss of their welcome to such in the future. I often wonder if they have read and considered the violence of the loss of Biblical characters, when a few words are allowed such power as to destroy them on a hub that more than the repeated appearance of those running a forum in the comment section will be read any further than a few comments after it has been discovered as a battle ground for "poor me's". I was tempted to direct them here, but was afraid they would bring the battle with them. Perhaps they will find their way to truths when they get tired of the road they are on. I tried directing the one who emailed me to your hubs as well as a few others that you know as I do and it seemed they had a tainted reason for not visiting every one of them. So as a Witness one can only travel so far.

You've done a great justice to the Disciples who gave all even unto death that as those of us in America have so much insulation that most think that Martyrs end with the race to the mini mart for a 12 pack of beer for the afternoon of a ball game or auto race. It along with their dues they think will get them through the pearly gates for the big screen of high resolution and never ending keg of ice cold beer, thinking surely God has updated his place that he prepared to MY likes, since the church put in rock bands and threw out the choirs, so much has changed! We play basket ball on Wednesday nights now, or didn't he notice. I'll shut up now 'cuz I'm getting as ridiculous as organized, non-denominational churches racing to the most up beat offerings to get in the head count of folks Who will come if we build it and fill our needs through the pass the hat through the rows 3 times a week. Heck they give in fear of another message droning on about why? they should let go of some of their money, taking place once a month.

A fantastic hub you have given for folks to think upon the price that has been paid that we ever got to hear it in the first place. If there existed only quitters what would we know today? We are truly blessed when just a little thought is applied, I thank you until the day you are better paid,Dusty

50,

I regret that some hubbers find it necessary to engage in unloving behaviors that exacerbates ill will and wreck interpersonal relationships. Matthew gives us the reason when he presented the truth “If then the light within you is darkness, how great is that darkness!” The core problem is as Scripture teaches - the self. If we could overcome the self, as did the disciples and all martyrs, we would discover agape love. We would learn that the battle is not without, but within.

We pray for our brothers and sisters lost in the maze of confusion and for those caught in the web of honest perplexities.

I am reminded of the thousands who have given their lives for something that was intrinsically wrong, but in their hearts and in their souls, they thought they were right. May the Lord have mercy on us all.

Thank you 50 for sharing your thoughts and words of wisdom that could only be due to the Spirit working in you. All glory to God!

Rev Lady, I wasn't sure that what I wrote made any sense as I wrote in the midst of folks entangled there emailing me to come to their side of the argument. I couldn't do that as both sides were wronging each other. A hub I read had a comment "Christians eat their own" I felt like Elmer Fudd with his head inside the bell when good old Bugs Bunny hit it with a hammer, leaving Elmer vibrating in his shoes, when I read that tidbit of truth on the hub of a fairly new hubber. "Though the argument has circulated that times are better now, humanity more civil and the church is in better standing so that we need not suffer as our forerunners." In one way, we do not have to hide our faith from people, but we are still persecuted in other ways. I remember having teachers in college who would underhandedly mock Christianity in their classes. I do not hold the scars of initial martyrs, but I am still made to feel uncomfortable in times like those.

Rev Lady, Excellent thought provoking presentation! Persecution comes along with being committed to The Gospel of Jesus Christ by those who are within as well as those outside. It is not always easy and it requires sacrifice and letting go of some things and at times some people… I have pledged my life to the Lord and HIS Word! Although at times difficult the spiritual benefits are well worth it! I realize that some things will not be understood on this side of heaven… But there is much inner PEACE when you know that the LORD knows your heart and our intentions…

I am most thankful as to have been able to stand in the Colosieum in Rome! There is still a lingering distinct aroma of death and grief about it. It is without doubt a place where much spiritual warfare took place and many lives were taken… Yes, we too at times must suffer for the Gospel… When you are committed to His service it is so a part of you it becomes a daily lifestyle and not just a religion….

“From the time Christ was sent to the cross, there began the persecution of Christians which will never end until His coming again. Christ Himself told us: “Remember the words I spoke to you: ‘No servant is greater than his master.’ If they persecuted me, they will persecute you also.” John 15:20. Amen & AMEN! I also know what it is like to be in Turkey a country that is 90% non believers…Although only a short visit it was memorable; one must truly trust the Lord when you are amidst those who do not believe in Jesus Christ!

“Persecution of Christians continues to show compelling evidence of its existence today.“ This is so true! Quite often when we proclaim The Gospel we are called being judgmental and… Yes we must incur battle scars for standing on the Word of GOD! However we must not compromise HIS WORD for the sake of being accepted. We must speak forth the TRUTH of the Lord’s Word! Jude tells us “to contend for the FAITH”

Thank you for sharing such excellent examples and this wonderful narrative! In HIS Love, Grace, Joy, Peace & Blessings!

I AM NOT ASHAMED OF THE GOSPEL OF JESUS CHRIST!

DeBorrah,

How wonderful that you have been blessed to visit holy lands and visit sacred historical places that is so meaningful to Christians. It must have been spiritually elevating experiences and affirming to your convictions. All glory to God!

It is true that the sacrifices we make in His name and for His sake are not easy as its requirements often leaves us grieved in our spirits and souls for those who have yet to understand our lifestyle.

“one must truly trust the Lord when you are amidst those who do not believe in Jesus Christ!” AMEN! And, I might add, even when in the midst of those who “claim” to believe but whose way of life contradicts it.

I am convinced that many people have a distorted perception of what being judgmental in the Bible really means. Thus, we are, as you said, oftentimes accused of being “judgmental” from their understanding of what it means.

Thank you, servant of God, for blessing me this Sunday morning with the value of your commentary and for contributing to my spiritual development. All glory to God!!

Love, peace and joy in Him, our beloved first Martyr.
