What instructive and comforting words are given to us by the Apostle Paul: Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. Philippians 4:4-7.
The preservation which God promises is the peace which transcends all understanding and will guard our hearts and minds in Christ Jesus; a peace treaty signed by the blood of His Son on our behalf. Jesus Christ has offered such an all sufficient satisfaction of our sins that God finds no fault with His children. And because we are acceptable to God through our Redeemer, we are enabled to experience peace in our conscience where guilt once ruled. When our conscience sees that God is satisfied and no longer at war with it, then it also becomes satisfied. Thus, our conscience, which was once a great disturber of the peace of our hearts and minds, finds a quiet resting place there: the peace of God which transcends all understanding.
What does this mean? It means that God gives His children such a peace, that human faculties cannot comprehend it or attain it. The understanding of mere carnal man can never fathom this peace. God’s peace has no relationship to the state of our worldly affairs. Anyone who tries with a philosophic look to discover the secret of the Christian’s peace finds himself frustrated in a never-ending maze. PhD’s may teach us much, but they cannot give us rules whereby man can reach the peace that Christians have in their conscience, heart, spirit and mind. Psychology and Psychiatry can lay down all the maxims for life which they think will promote happiness and serenity and well-being, but they cannot give peace to troubled souls, a peace undisturbed by surrounding events and which cannot be intruded upon by the fiercest winds of adversity. Nothing external can produce the peace of God, which transcends all understanding.
The Christian achieve with faith what nonbelievers can never do himself. Faith goes further than understanding and the peace which the child of God enjoys is one which the world cannot understand and cannot procure on his own: the peace of God which transcends ALL understanding. The peace that flows from God not only transforms us from within but reforms our outer life and this peace keeps the heart and mind through Jesus Christ. Without Christ Jesus, this peace would not exist. Without our Lord and Savior, this peace cannot be maintained. It takes daily visits from the Redeemer; it takes continual looking with the eye of faith to Him who bled upon the Cross; it takes continual drawings from the ever-flowing Fountain filled with blood for this peace to abide and to endure. A Christian has no peace with God except through the atonement of the Captain of our salvation: the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.
I cannot describe in human language what this peace is. If you have not felt it, you may not know what I am trying to explain. But it is real nevertheless. I know it is real. When you possess this peace, you may live from hand to mouth and scarcely know where your next meal is coming from or where you will find a place to lay your head; but your mind is unruffled, calm and quiet. If you are as rich as the world’s richest, and lose it all, you could care less. The peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.
When you possess this peace, even the loss of loved ones cannot shake your firm foundation. The heart might be heavy, the eyes teary, the spirit wounded, the heart hurting, but we still look up to our God in peaceful submission and cry out, “Lord, You have given and You have taken away, blessed be Your holy name. Your will, O Lord, not mine:” the peace of God, which transcends all understanding.
Martin Luther King, Jr., taking a stand of humanity and justice before the bloodhounds of Satan; their tongues thirsting for his blood, stands calm and quiet fearing no man and declaring, “I have been to the mountaintop and seen the glory of the coming of the Lord:” the peace of God, which transcends all understanding.
But perhaps, the most beautiful and most common illustration of this sweet peace is the dying bed of the believer. I have seen it so many times. And it has been good for me to be in that sacred solitary room where all was quiet and still. The entire world shut out and heaven shut in, where that soul nearing its God is in blessed peace, the peace of God, which transcends all understanding.
You cannot know this peace beloved, unless you are a child of God and possess it yourself. I testify that when you have once felt it; when you can stand calm in the midst of turbulence, confident of ultimate victory; when you can sing the Lord’s song in a foreign land; when you can smile as the heathen rage; when you can hold your head up high, while your enemies are putting you down; when you can trust God as the lightning flash and the thunder roars in your life; when you can always rest securely in the goodness and mercy of the Most High God, then and only then, will you know you have the peace of God, which transcends all understanding.
Let me hasten to add lest I be misunderstood, that you will note Paul made it clear that although God gave us this peace promise, it has certain conditions and it is only by the practice of the conditions that we can get the promise of His peace that transcends all understanding.
We are told first to always rejoice. The Christian who never rejoices, but always groaning and crying and whining, who forgets God and is always murmuring about his or her troubles, will lose the opportunity to enjoy a peace that transcends all understanding. Some of us need to cultivate a cheerful disposition; wear a smile reflecting the peace in your hearts. Do not allow mere temporal troubles to spoil your peace. Learn how to keep on rejoicing even when the sun stops shining in your life. Learn how to keep a song for all weather conditions, get a joy that will stand resolutely against clouds and storms. When we know how to rejoice in sorrow, we shall have this peace of God, which transcends all understanding.
“Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God” Philippians 4:6.
Jesus knew that life is an intimate relationship, a bond between man and God. God watches man and animals. His gracious eye is always on each of us. He will keep us on earth until our final word is spoken and our last task is performed. If you lose you job, it is no loss. If you are concerned first and last to fulfill God’s purpose, and if you remain faithful, He will provide for you. You are always and ever in His kind, compassionate and competent care. Some of us, Christian though we may be, fail sadly in this joyous trust in God and therefore, sacrifice the peace of God, which transcends all understanding.
We cannot have God’s peace until we learn to relinquish our troubles to God. My mother always told us children to never keep a problem or concern on our mind for more than a minute before taking it to God in prayer. As soon as the issue comes, quick, get rid of it. Give it to your Daddy. You may not realize it, but the longer it takes you to tell God all about your predicament, the more you lose of your own peace of mind. The longer the frost last the more likely your garden vegetables will freeze. It is important to know that when troubles come, that is the frost and it will last until you go to the Son and your troubles will melt away (notice, I purposefully used the word melt, not suddenly disappear).
The first moment you find yourself in quandary, stop, humble yourself and have a little talk with your Father. Do this in every little thing. Take everything to God in prayer. After all, God, who has given us the great gift of life, will not fail to provide its temporal needs. If God cares for birds and even for grass which is used for fuel, we may trust His care for man.
When we have peace in God beloved, it guards our hearts and minds against Satan. All Satan’s tricks are lost on those who possess the peace of God, which transcends all understanding. His peace shields the heart and mind and keeps them undivided because our whole heart and mind is set on God; heart is fixed, mind made up to live for the Lord.
WARNING! “There is no peace,” says the LORD, “for the wicked” Isaiah 48:22.
And now, may the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, guard your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus, our Lord. Amen!

RevLady: This is great advice. Approaching God in prayer, all hurried and anxious, fearful or angered, serves nothing. Our prayers are definitely heard but if they are confused, God cannot and won't answer them as we might wish.
Lovely Hub! It is so true, one can only accept Jesus as Lord & Savior to really feel the peace he promised us.
There is nothing that gives me peace more than knowing God's presence in my life and circumstance and a Word from Him in the midst of it all cures any unrest of my soul.
I was just reading this week about the children of Israel when they complained and whined to Moses rather than asking God to help them God took it personally that they had no confidence in Him. I think I need to work on that one a bit still.
I liked your explanation of His peace treaty being signed in blood.
"Psychology and Psychiatry can lay down all the maxims for life which they think will promote happiness and serenity and well-being, but they cannot give peace to troubled souls, a peace undisturbed by surrounding events and which cannot be intruded upon by the fiercest winds of adversity." That is so true. We live in an area that so depends on psychology etc. that the doctors are almost worshiped. Still true peace only has one source, and you bring that out so clearly.
First let me say that i enjoyed Rev. Cleveland and the choir and i felt your message in my heart. Made me remember the lyric, ' Take it to the lord in prayer ' Thank you Dear one.
Peace and happiness just can not come by having faith. The faith has to be suppimented by how you behave with rest of world, and many a times you need lots of social circle to get out of tight corners. But very thought provoking hub i liked it
Rev. Lady,
an all important message that I tend to overlook in my days. The song "What A Friend We Have In Jesus" came to the front of my thoughts as I read a re-mindful message that should be in my day to day movements and not have to be reminded.
I thank you for filling my daily bread basket to excess this morning.
Great is our Lord and Savior, and easy is his yoke, and if we take our load unto him he will carry it for us.
Praise Ye Yah! HALLELU-JAH,
Many Blessings, Much Peace,
Love,
Dusty
Rev Lady- Thank you for sharing this sacred wisdom! The Peace of God surely does pass all understanding, its what the whole world is looking for but can only be found in the Prince of Peace-Jesus! You made a great point that we must choose to be at peace. The Isrealites died in the desert, partly because they (chose) not to enter into His rest.- Peace and Blessings Rev Lady-WBA
RevLady, this is yet another solid Biblical teaching!
Thank you so much!
What beauty there is in peace dear heart, and what a wonderful subject to embrace. God Bless You, and your Precious loved ones. Wonderful hub in so many ways.
"We cannot have God’s peace until we learn to relinquish our troubles to God."....To me this is the key to obtaining that peace. Learning to relinqish my troubles to God requires my trust in Him to be built up in Him. This is something that I desire and am striving for each and everyday. I want to come to the point that no matter what I'm facing, I trust God to take care of it. This trust leads to having the perfect peace. Great Hub...
Great hub which presents great thoughts to live by. There is no other alternative to the "Peace" that God gives. It is the true cure for all men's troubles and anxieties. Possessing the peace of God is much greater than possessing all earthly treasures. We must all possess the peace of God to have joy in this life. Thank you for sharing these timeless truths here at Hubpages.
Blessings to you always and to your family. I wish you a great day today. Best regards.
Rev Lady, Thank you so much for sharing. I love Philippians 4:4-9. It tells me to rejoice always. It assures me that the Lord is always at my hand. It encourages me not to be anxious for no-thing or as the KJV says careful (full of care) but in every-thing by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God and then the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard my heart and mind through Christ Jesus. Then it tells me how to replace my negative cares by meditation on positive things. And like book ends Paul concludes with the God of peace with me. This passage of God’s Word has been a comfort to me for years. Thanks again for sharing your beautiful discussion on God’s Word. Vote up and beautiful.
Wonderful hub Rev Lady-He is always available and just waiting to be called upon....no appointment necessary.God Bless and I trust you are keeping well .
RevLady, O how Marvelous! The Peace that comes from God is Extraordinary!
“What does this mean? It means that God gives His children such a peace, that human faculties cannot comprehend it or attain it. The understanding of mere carnal man can never fathom this peace. God’s peace has no relationship to the state of our worldly affairs. Anyone who tries with a philosophic look to discover the secret of the Christian’s peace finds himself frustrated in a never-ending maze” PRAISE GOD! This indeed is also what makes us so peculiar!
My soul REJOICES with you in THE LORD! My soul wants so to MAGNIFY THE LORD! HE TRULY IS what matters most! In Him through His precious Holy Spirit we can ALWAYS REJOICE! I thank our Heavenly Father for the spiritual insight He has placed within you! HIS WAYS is beyond what man can comprehend with the carnal mind! “You cannot know this peace beloved, unless you are a child of God and possess it yourself. I testify that when you have once felt it; when you can stand calm in the midst of turbulence, confident of ultimate victory; when you can sing the Lord’s song in a foreign land; when you can smile as the heathen rage; when you can hold your head up high, while your enemies are putting you down; when you can trust God as the lightning flash and the thunder roars in your life; when you can always rest securely in the goodness and mercy of the Most High God, then and only then, will you know you have the peace of God, which transcends all understanding.” PRAISE GOD! Thank you for sharing and "SPEAKING THE TRUTH IN LOVE", In HIS Love, Grace, Joy, Understanding, Peace & Blessings! GOD BLESS YOU
I sit here reading these words and shaking my head in agreement. So true. I read your words of MLK Jr below and they gave me chills...my spirit understands what my logical mind can not absorb-disect-assimilate in any wordly sense in the flesh..."the peace of God, which transcends all understanding."
"...Taking a stand of humanity and justice before the bloodhounds of Satan; their tongues thirsting for his blood, stands calm and quiet fearing no man and declaring, “I have been to the mountaintop and seen the glory of the coming of the Lord:” the peace of God, which transcends all understanding.
I myself stand calm and quiet fearing no man-calm against bloody thirsty and evil men who do not know the power of the Lord as I do. My faith is unfaultering in Jesus--I can not be moved. I am amazed and in awe of Jesus and what he is doing in my life--the storm is raging greatly around me at this time-many plots and deceptions but the Lord keeps me grounded-safe and at peace.(I sleep like a baby)I giggled as I read these words " I have been to the mountaintop and seen the glory of the coming of the Lord." I understand these words so very much.
When you truly know the Lord...there is no fear of death, no man can shake you or scare you--no matter what they do or threaten to do. It leaves them baffled on what to do with me because most would be trembling...hahaha and I laugh that they do not see it for the simplicity of what it is that keeps me from their attempted harms way. It is the hand of Christ upon me-God controls ALL things and as he stands with his hands out--I continue to walk out to him on the raging waters-keeping my eyes fixated on him only and all is well and peaceful!!I am not baffled by this at all...I am not worried-I am at complete peace because I hear the Shepard's voice and he tells me very good things. :) I know that God is the most powerful-over man and satan--so I know who has given me this incredible peace to weather the storm ;) and I love him with my whole heart.
Thanks for great reading. Thanks for loving Jesus and always standing firmly and unfaultering on the ROCK in his name--even with your own raging storms you've been experiencing. Yes--forever His! :)
Another well written Hub, gifted from God! As always I am encouraged and edified by your writings! Thank you so much for letting God use you to witness to others!! Always remain BLESSED!!!!! Voted-Up!
A glorious message! I have been blessed to receive this peace. I pray that I may live a loving and righteous life as I follow the teachings of my Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.
He is my strength and my light. I am nothing without him.
Your message is timeless. It is inspiring. I will remember Pauls message, "the peace of God, which transcends all understanding. "
You are a beautiful blessing in my life. I will be reading all your hubs, as time allows.
May God go with you...

I Book Marked this one! Printing and going to go get a cup of Hot Chocolate, sit down and savor every word here:) Had noticed I hadn't been to visit your hubs in awhile...so this is the first one I pulled up:) Blessings for Me! Loved your title...keep on Writing, right, RevLady:)
Praise the Lord! Just beautiful and inspiring words of truth! As I've aged, I've learned to let so many "anxious" things go and really give my burdens over to the King of kings! Peace as He giveth it, is unlike anything the world can give us. I know I'm late in reading this but for me, the message came right on time. Life around me is kind of hectic at the moment, but as long as the Lord stands beside me, I can nagivate the storms in calm. It is such an easy answer and one so many easily forget. You stated it right at the end. "Stop!" That is the first step. When things are rough and anxiety is taking over - just "stop!" And then humble yourself before the Lord. Pray and give Him time to work out a way or show you a path. Be patient. Praise the Lord! Peace
Saundra, I know the feeling. I've been having the same trouble as well. Life sometimes takes over and doing what we have to do takes over and we put aside what we want to do - like spend lots of time on the computer reading awesome hubs by people like you :) Peace
Wow! This is truly a hub of excellence for our time! Thanks for sharing these insights into what we should be doing during our daily struggle. Our God is an awesome God! :) I'm sharing this on FB with others, because this is for the here and now. Thank You Lord!!
Thank you for the reminder that we must learn to sing in the rain and praise Him in spite of our circumstances. There is true peace and it only comes from Him.
Don't know where my first comment went, but I went back and voted, and it worked. Yea!

This kind of peace really is a taste of the life to come. No situation or hardship overcomes the peace found by trusting in God because even death is seen as the human thing it is and not a spiritual effect.
