In Defense of the Resurrection of Jesus Christ
75
Twenty-first century unbelief regards the fact of the resurrection as of no importance, insisting that it is the spirit or image of Jesus continuing to work in the world that we need to be concerned with. But Apostle Paul represents the resurrection of Jesus as a fact of fundamental importance to Christianity. "If Christ has not been raised, our preaching is useless and so is your faith." 1 Corinthians 15:14.
Whatever diversity of opinion may prevail as to the importance of the historic fact, there is full agreement as to the vital significance of the belief in the fact entertained by the apostles and the Church founded by them. All admit both the existence of the belief and the essential service it rendered in establishing and advancing the Christian faith. And most admit that without this belief, Christianity could not have started its marvelous world conquering career.
That being true, it is obviously incumbent on all who agree to give a purely naturalistic and rationalistic account of the origin of Christianity, to explain the origin of the belief in the resurrection. This, however, they find difficulty in doing.
Some of the theories that are floating around to discredit the actual resurrection of Jesus includes: hypnosis theory, spiritual resurrection theory (modern and gaining in popularity), twin theory, drugged body theory, swoon theory, vision theory, telegram theory, legend theory, missing body and stolen body theories. For purposes of this hub, these theories are reduced to the three considered by many to be the most plausible and boast the most followers.
THEORIES ATTEMPTING TO EXPLAIN AWAY THE RESURRECTION
Swoon theory – alleges that after a temporary lapse of consciousness Jesus was revived, and was actually seen several times by some of His disciples; that He lived long enough to be seen by Paul, then finally died in some secret location. Those that espouse this hypothesis reason, that crucifixions, even when both feet and hands are pierced, cause little loss of blood, and kills slowly by convulsions or starvation. If then Jesus, believed to be dead, was taken down from the cross after some six hours, the supposed death may very well have been only a swoon (losing consciousness), from which, after lying in the cool cavern covered with healing ointments and strongly scented spices, He might recover.
Even if we were to admit to a minuscule possibility of a recovery from swoon caused by pain and exhaustion, there remain against this theory the clear unanimous testimony of the evangelists that Jesus was actually dead, not to speak of the statement in John's gospel that His side was pierced by the unerring spear of a Roman soldier.
Another consideration fatal to this proposal is that a Jesus who had never been dead coming from His tomb wearing an exhausted, ghastly look could NEVER have revived the hearts of the disciples. It is unfathomable that a Jesus who weakly crept out of the sepulcher, ill and needing medical treatment, could have given to the disciples the impression that He was a conqueror over death. Such resuscitation would only have diminished the impression He had made on His disciples in life and in death. It could not have changed their sorrow into enthusiasm or elevated their reverence into worship. It just could not have happened.
Vision theory – alleges that the earliest belief in the resurrection was based on illusory visions of ghostlike apparitions of Jesus. Resolved that Jesus should not remain among the dead, the believing community were in a prime state of mind for seeing Jesus alive again and that the empty tomb helped to make them more susceptible to hallucinations. Mary Magdalene was the first to have the vision.
According to this hypothesis, she stood by the sepulcher weeping and heard a soft sound behind her. She turned and saw a man standing whom she asked where the body was. She received for her reply her own name. It was the voice that so often made her tremble. It was the scent of Jesus. The miracle of love is accomplished. Mary has seen and heard Him. After one has seen Him, there will be no difficulty in others seeing Him; having visions will become infectious till it passes through the whole company of disciples. Thus, the appearances of Jesus are the creation of excited nerves and ardent expectations.
Another way in which the vision theory is argued is on the basis that Paul relates his experience of Jesus with the earlier appearances of Jesus to the disciples, and therefore it is reasoned that the visions recorded in the Gospels were the same in nature as that with which Paul was privileged. But Paul's vision was beyond question subjective, and Paul was a man predisposed to have such visions. He himself tells us that he frequently experienced such ecstatic conditions, "I will go on to visions and revelations from the Lord." 2 Corinthians 12:1.
There are many weak points with this theory including the fact that at the time the resurrection is reported to have taken place and Jesus to have shown Himself alive after His passion, the disciples were is such depressed a states of mind that subjective visions were the last thing in the world they were likely to experience. All four of the canonical Gospels described the death, burial and resurrection of Jesus, and all four testify to the depressed, unexpectant mood of the disciples at this period. Matthew states that on the occasion of Christ's meeting with His followers in Galilee "some doubted." (28:17). Mark relates that when the disciples heard from Mary Magdalene that Jesus was alive, and she had seen Him, "they did not believe it." (16:11). Luke tells that the reports of the women seemed to the disciples as "nonsense." (24:11). In place of general statements, John gives an example of the incredulity of the disciples in the case of Thomas,
Now Thomas (called Didymus), one of the Twelve, was not with the
disciples when Jesus came. So the other disciples told him, "We have seen
the Lord!"
But he said to them, "Unless I see the nail marks in his hands and put my finger where the nails were, and put my hand into his side, I will not believe it."
A week later his disciples were in the house again, and Thomas was with them. Though the doors were locked, Jesus came and stood among them and said, "Peace be with you!" Then he said to Thomas, "Put your finger here; see my hands. Reach out your hand and put it into my side. Stop doubting and believe."
Thomas said to him, "My Lord and my God!"
Then Jesus told him, "Because you have seen me, you have believed; blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed." (20:24-29).
Perhaps the strongest argument against the vision theory is the entire change in the mood of the disciples within a short period of time; from depression and sorrow to a clear knowledge of Christ's Messianic dignity and energetic resolves to bear witness to the world for their risen and exalted Lord.
Telegram theory – describes the predicament of the disciples. It claims that without the living Jesus the Messianic faith would have been destroyed by the crucifixion, and in the return of the apostles to the synagogue and to Judaism even the gold of Christ’s teaching would have been buried in the dust of oblivion. The greatest of men, Jesus, had passed away leaving no trace of Himself.
Thus, after the crushing overthrow of the crucifixion, especially in the childhood of humanity, the disciples needed a sign of life from Jesus, a telegram from heaven was necessary. Even the Christianity of the present day owes its existence to this telegram from heaven. The hope of immortality, otherwise a mere perhaps, has become through Christ’s word in the telegram, a bright light and clear truth.
The problem with this theory is that it dares to tamper with the Gospel narratives. It also leaves itself open to the charge that it makes the faith of the disciples, like the vision theory, rest on a hallucination. Christ allegedly sends a series of telegrams from heaven to let His disciples know that all is well. But what do the telegrams say in each case? My Spirit lives with God and cares for you and my body is raised from the grave? If the resurrection is unreality, if the body that was nailed to the tree never came forth from the tomb, why send messages that were certain to produce an opposite impression? Certainly, this is a poor foundation to build Christendom upon.
Resurrection Faith
All the above mentioned hypotheses proceed on the assumption that there was a real experience of the disciples demanding explanation. They saw the real body of Jesus who had not been actually dead, or they thought they saw the risen body of the dead Jesus and were mistaken or they saw the real image of the body and were not mistaken and so on.
According to a more recent theory, there was no experience to explain. The Christophanies had no existence for the first disciples, but found a place only in the later traditions reported in the Gospels, so that what needs to be explained is simply the rise of the legend of the resurrection.
All naturalistic and rationalistic attempts to explain away the resurrection, to this date, have been utter failures. The physical resurrection remains. In the resurrection of Jesus, two processes seem to have been combined into one: the revival of the crucified body, and its transformation into a spiritual body endowed with an eternal form of existence.
Christianity accepts the Biblical witness to the resurrection, not because of logical proof; not because of historical reasoning but because of an inner testimony of the gospel. Our faith is not in history – but in God who acts in history. The Christian faith is resurrection faith.
Christians accepts the biblical multiple eye witness testimonies to the resurrection as the truth. We reject the notion that the followers of Christ would sacrifice their lives for a known lie. The faithful died for Christ and His promises, these were followers of Jesus Christ dying for a historical event – His resurrection that established Him as the Son of God, Son of Man.

Rev Lady, This is a wonderful hub. I am grateful today that I am not looking for signs or wonders, I don't live in doubt, but that I live in the security of knowing my Lord and Savior are right here for me. Thanks for sharing all the interesting facets in this article. It is very good.
Revlady, this was a great and macgnificent hub, I but live my life off of one simple theory,That is, if the KJV say it I believe it. No ifs ands or but. thank you so m uch for this hub, because there are doubting Thomsas out in the world. Than k you for sharing. Godspeed. creativeone59
Of course I agree with you REV and The Apostle Paul I think the church risen from the dead is one "fact". "HIS" place in the fathers side where he belong, HE is destined to be there, You said it nice here, "the revival of the crucified body, and its transformation into a spiritual body endowed with an eternal form of existence."
Happy weekend and bless, hugs hugs and hugs, Maita
Wow, I'm so glad you are exposing these heretical views that are yet one more "false prophecy" in these last days. Satan consistenly attacks and twists the holiest elements of Christian doctrine. I recently was exposed to one of these false prophets that explained the meaning of "every spirit that confesses Jesus Christ has come in the flesh is of God" (1 John 4:2) ~ he said this means the spirit of Christ in us, the flesh...that He never came in the literal flesh, but it's an allegory. WOW! We'd better know our Bible, be filled with the Spirit of God, and have a faith unwavering to be the "elect" that are NOT deceived!! (Mark 13:22) Thank you for this hub, and God richly bless His ministry of truth through you, sister.
Yes, the bottom line of this guy's false belief is that Jesus didn't come in the literal flesh, literally die, literally rise and literally ascend! It literally destroys the fundamental foundation of Christianity altogether. How can Christ be in us without having atoned for our sin? I am just flabbergasted at the "new and different gospels" popping up like burnt kernels from hell. May we continue to preach, teach and reach as long as God gives us another day. Amen!!
Good evening, Reverend Lady, this is a most beautiful and perfectly timed hub - Easter Sunday is right around the corner. Sadly, most people are celebrating Easter as just another pagan holiday (the Easter bunny and colorful painted eggs), but we celebrate the Risen Christ - that Jesus, HALLELUJAH!, conquered death!
I like what you say your mother used to say, "Same battle, different people, different day." So true!
I will be fighting, if you will, a sort-of battle myself on Easter Sunday. Some of my family members have forgotten what Easter is really all about, but my husband and I are gathering our family for the sake of reminding them about Jesus and His Love and Sacrifice for us.
We are not getting together on Easter Sunday for the sake of a family gathering, cooking and eating, but for the opportunity to pray together and invite the Holy Spirit into our midst (our way of planting seeds, and leaving the rest to God).
We went to church today - Crossroads - and Pastor Nanda spoke from Romans chapter 8. What a beautiful passage, and how appropriate for us today: "There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus..." Without guilt, today I took communion for the first time in many years. God be praised!
God bless and keep you filled with His Holy Spirit, Reverend Lady, and I send you much love and many hugs in Christ Jesus.

RevLady my dear sister Saundra, I am not so certain that spreading of The Gospels can be classified as a,your term, " 'World Conquering' Career".
What is so difficult in understanding the resurrection in the simplest of context? Why do we have to look past the obvious facts to try and defend or attack something so simple?
WORSHIP THROUGH FAITH
Simply speaking: I am a "Child of God"
I am a SPIRITUAL BEING, inhabiting a human form existing on earth.
In the eyes of my Heavenly Father, I am a child, and I see and think as a child. Therefore my thoughts are simple and pure.
The Triune God I worship is of a spiritual nature, but since God is God, God has the power and ability to take on if He so desires, Human form.
Thus mankind was able to witness The Christ, Jesus born into this world, into flesh, yet still spiritually God.
At His end, he was crucified, in the flesh of man, yet still God, and then Resurrected His Fleshly human body to demonstrate to mankind that He was truly the promised Son of God The Messiah promised by the profits, and then later after I believe 40 days As man and as God He physically and spiritually Ascends into Heaven, thus proving once again that He Jesus, was the Messiah,The Christ,on earth,in fulfillment of the Old Testament Prophesies.
Now that is a Childlike, simplistic view of the whole mystery of Jesus Christ and it all boils down to one word, FAITH.
It is childlike, it is simple, it is straight-forward, it is backed by The Holy Bible in all 4 Gospels, as well as The Epistles, and the prophetic books of the Old Testament, therefore it is unrefutible.
Saundra this is the life of Jesus as seen through the "Angelic eyes of one of God's Children, me."
Brother Dave.
Morning RevLady as always though provoking and ringing with truth...Thank you faithful one in getting the Word out there for many to read about...you have a gift and we are blessed...
Blessing and Hugs
RevLady
Such a great hub.As long as there is truth ,there will be those who will try to demolish that truth.
'On the third day He rose again'
It is always good to reflect on the resurrection of Christ...it's reasons for truth...the Bible says, be ready to give an answer for those who question our hope. And RevLady you have. It always astounds me that people would take these stands against the death, burial and resurrection of Christ. And I liked your logical reasoning for why we need to know and receive the truth for what it is.
"Christianity accepts the Biblical witness to the resurrection, not because of logical proof; not because of historical reasoning but because of an inner testimony of the gospel." Amen! and Amen!
Thank you for another opportunity to praise God with you sister.
Love you
UlrikeGrace
It has already been stated, but I wish to affirm, that, "without the resurrection of Jesus Christ, there IS NO CHRISTIANITY!!!"
Need I say more?
I love it, I love your writings, so thought provoking. God bless you RevLady
Telegram theory - this is exactly what I've always felt, but could not put it into words. The Lords death could not be in vain, something profound had to be done at the end of His life for the word to be carried on forever. It was profound enough for his disciples to scatter the earth and spread the gospel. Thank you RevLady for my revelation.
Beautiful hub & well spoken Rev!
RevLady, you took perfect aim right from the start. Belief in the 'physical' resurrection gives us a different kind of hope than those that are really not sure what it is they are hoping for concerning the afterlife. When you look at all the best selling books and movies out there, you see a world of entertainment that makes dying and physically coming back to life an image of horror and cannibalism and unsatisfied thirst for blood. Where is the idea of being born again into a perfect body, in a perfect place beyond pain, hunger and death? The answer is all too clear. The worldly see this world age as its only chance and the hope of some reverent peaceful immortality is the only fantasy they cannot grasp. They are groping about in darkness, making survival in this world their hope and death a sting that can only be renewed in the likes of zombies and vampires. Thanks for renewing once again the inner testimony your readers all share in the true resurrection of content perfection. Peace
I love your choice of pictures, especially the Carravaggio. I attended a Methodist Church for a while and the Adult Sunday School Class was full of people who did not believe in the resurrection—which shocked me. They were only there for moral teaching and the Social Gospel. I told them. I told them they should all meet in a restaurant, not a church, if they didn't believe in what matters about Christianity. Anybody can feed the poor and house the homeless. Satan is working overtime to cast doubt on Christ. Thank you for this wonderfully well done countervailing move.
Rev Lady, Excellent “Message” This serves to prove what great lengths some will go to in order to make a felonious aberrant attempt to disprove the Gospel of Jesus Christ! But we know beyond a shadow of doubt, that they crucified our Lord and He arose with “ALL Power!” It is because of this profound Truth we can expect much spiritual warfare when we “Stand Up For Jesus!” Sometimes from those we least expect… I have experienced on occassion those who do not feel that; Christianity is a lifestyle and doubt the Ressurection, by those within the Church... Lord Help us! But Hallelujah anyhow!
“Christianity accepts the Biblical witness to the resurrection, not because of logical proof; not because of historical reasoning but because of an inner testimony of the gospel. Our faith is not in history – but in God who acts in history. The Christian faith is resurrection faith.” Amen & AMEN!
Wonderful thorough and concise Apologetic Message! Truly we have so much to be thankful for knowing that the Lord loved us so much that He adorned a sinless body of flesh! That He would boldly, yet humbly walk in TRUTH and gift us with His precious Holy Spirit who will lead us to all TRUTH!
Thank you my sister for an excellent exegesis! Marvelous illustrations! May HIS LIGHT continually shine brightly through you! In His Love & Blessings!
Very nice yet true hub. My main hope in life is because of the ressurection. Without it, what hope would we have? Im glad I serve a God thats still in charge. Blessings to you.
Hello woman of God!
I'm a divinity student studying in Toronto, Canada.
Thank you, thank you, thank you for such an interesting and truthful exposition of the importance of affirming the bodily resurrection of Christ. I know many people who believe in Jesus who believe that believe he is alive but don't understand what I mean when I insist on bodily resurrection. I am grateful that our amazing Lord is the one who chooses his friends, and not me! :)
It's the first day of the New Creation,
Rob
Good morning, just finished your hub. Nicely done and extremely well referenced. I enjoyed your use of scripture to defend the faith in His resurrection. Be blessed. And yes no sane person would die for a lie. He is risen indeed.
RevLady, excellent. Though we walk by faith, this does not discount the need to learn things, study up, and be able to give that good defense.
Paul laid it out here: Without Jesus' resurrection, our faith means zip. Nada. Nothing. But He is risen indeed ...
RevLady, thanks for a faith assuring hub. I believe in the resurrection for sure...from material unto the Spirit in Eternal Heaven.
The people who disrespect the gospels know nothing about the history of the period in which Jesus lived. The gospels were written within fifty years of the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. The first written accounts about Julius Caesar are from Tacitus, and they date from one hundred and fifty years after his death. Yet nobody doubts the facts about his assassination. Jesus Christ is the best attested person of his era. That is an historical fact. It can only be because He was the most remarkable person of his time. Of course The Resurrection happened, as it was related in the gospels. There is no other way to account for the meteoric rise of christianity. It had to be based round a miracle so profound as to literally amaze people. There were thousands of itinerant preachers of every hue around in the first century, but none of them had the lasting effect that Our Lord had. I dont really think that we have to ask why.
Thank you for an inspiring article.
Love, love, love your hub and the Scripture references! Your always defending the Faith! Strong presence you have as a believer!!! God Bless you always! Voted-up!
I agree, why are people battling over Easter. It seems, that it did happen, historically, even. I don't why people keep trying to tare it down. I try to promote Bible based Churches on my youtube or at least those teachings. He is coming back soon anyways. I don't how soon, but I can see the flowers metaphorically saying "He is coming back to be King soon!".
So I pray, try and compromise with God; if I can and if he'll let me. Try to learn from Jesus and stories from people I know and the Bible. I enjoyed reading your debates on here. I can't wait for Palm Sunday, Easter, or Christmas, every year!!!!! YAY!:D God bless.
Thank you for a though provoking ideas you have shared in this hub...I am looking forward of reading more of you topics.
God bless you always!
As I was about to write this very comment I had an flash of insight. It came as I looked at the word Resurrection to spell it correctly. The word broken down contains RE and SURE. The resurrection was a RESURE of God's Love. A RESURE that Jesus Christ was and is the promised messiah. A RESURE that he conquered death and hell. A RESURE that Life continues after death. I am so glad I read your hub!
Truly,He paid the prize of our sin that we may live and have life in abundeant
May all glory be unto Him alone
Dear Rev Lady : Your work is beautiful the way in which you speak of our Lord in Heaven. I have learned much in this addition of your work. God Bless You Precious Heart, and Your Wonderful Family.

Great hub indeed. Truly almost all the disciples suffered great persecution and almost all of them died a martyr's death for following the truth of the Gospel of Christ which is not complete without the resurrection of JesusChrist. They wont be simply martyred for a lie. Thank you for sharing these great facts. Remain blessed.
