For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways," declares the LORD. As the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts than your thoughts. Isaiah 55:8-9.
The appearance of the wheels and their work was like unto the color of a beryl: and they four had one likeness: and their appearance and their work was as it were a wheel in the middle of a wheel. Ezekiel 1:16.
Few people have not heard the expression, “God’s ways are not our ways.” We hear it frequently as we struggle and grapple with understanding our circumstance in the context of our faith. Sorrow, strife, disaster prompt us to ask what life is all about. We are a suffering humanity. There is an inseparable connection between God’s providence, and His people.
Providence is God in every act by which, in His wisdom, He orders all events within the universe so that the purpose for which it was created may be realized. The doctrine of divine providence asserts that God is in complete control of all things. This includes the;
Universe as a whole,
The LORD has established his throne in heaven, and his kingdom rules over all. (Psalm 103:19),
The physical world, He causes his sun to rise on the evil and the good, and sends rain on the righteous and the unrighteous. (Matthew 5:45).
The affairs of nations, He rules forever by his power, his eyes watch the nations—let not the rebellious rise up against him. (Psalm 66:7).
Human birth and destiny, God, who set me apart from birth and called me by his grace. (Galatians 1:15).
Human successes and failures, He has brought down rulers from their thrones but has lifted up the humble. (Luke 1:52).
And the protection of His people, I will lie down and sleep in peace, for you alone, O LORD, make me dwell in safety. (Psalm 4:8).
This doctrine stands in direct opposition to the idea that the universe is governed by chance or fate.
The wheel that Ezekiel speaks of is a symbol of Providence. By a wheel within a wheel, God governs and makes all things work together for good to those who love Him. This includes all pleasant and all painful things, all things. This is what Paul was saying when he declared: “All things work together for the good to them that love the Lord and are called according to his purpose”? You will note that he included that significant word, ALL. It is not the good or the bad; it is the good AND the bad. When combined the result is joy, joy, joy. So we may rejoice knowing that God rules and overrules each event of life, and while we work He is working in us according to His good pleasure.
Scriptures everywhere affirms this truth. The Bible is full of the records of God’s activities in human affairs, as the daily news is full of the records of man’s activities in individual, national and international life. This is why Paul could glory in his infirmities. He understood that in all the pains and penalties, the joys and grief, the thoughts and imaginations of life, God is busy educing good out of evil still. God has not abandoned His beloved creation. Our God is not an absentee God and He does not cast absentee ballots. He is in charge of all elections; He is managing all things according to the immutable counsel of His own will.
History proves this truth. Never did men meet behind closed doors without God seeing them. He knows every plot and conspiracy man can contrive. There is no blind spot, He is not limited by peripheral vision, and there is no blind chance in the government of God or in the affairs of men. All His Providences have a fixed purpose and are arranged accordingly. The history of the universe, from beginning to end, is planned, ruled, guided, and directed by the omniscient, omnipotent Creator God. Nothing occurs which has not been intended, either permissively or purposefully, by Jehovah God. He has providential control over all of history, despite the free will choices of man.
The lot is cast into the lap, but its every decision is from the LORD. Proverbs 16:33.
For he "has put everything under his feet.” Now when it says that "everything" has been put under him, it is clear that this does not include God himself, who put everything under Christ. 1 Corinthians. 15:27.
In him we were also chosen, having been predestined according to the plan of him who works out everything in conformity with the purpose of his will. Ephesians 1:11.
The laws of nature illustrate God’s activity in human life. The thunderstorm drives off noxious vapors. The earthquake is a safety valve by which imprisoned gases are set free. Hurricanes suck up the heat from the tropics thereby preventing it from becoming too hot.
Of course, we cannot ignore that there are times when God’s providence appears adverse, when myriad shapes seem to haunt our paths, when the very blackness appalls and our hearts cry out in utter agony. Sometimes in life, the most potent defense we have against the unrelenting winds of Providence is the faith to believe that even our “present sufferings are not worth comparing with the glory that will be revealed in us.” When life begin to choke us, when circumstances push us into a corner, when our spiritual wiring short-circuits, we wait on Him because “we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose.”
I have learned that even though I may have to cry sometimes, my eyes see clearer after being washed with tears. My faith is my consolation, faith in the Providence of God. I know that God brings everything to the good. Isaiah puts it this way: On this mountain he will destroy the shroud that enfolds all peoples. Our God is a God of love and mercy, the God of the invisible who see justice, goodness, and love grow slowly within our hearts and He is patient and loving enough to look beyond our faults.
We cannot get along without God. Nothing happens in our lives which does not help those who love God. Whether losses or crosses, whether abuse or misuse, leads to strength and the courage to silently bear our sorrow for His glory. Our ways are ordered by Him, our breath depends on Him. I believe all of our joys and sorrows are but parts of one great plan preparing us for heaven life with Him.
Sometimes, when I contemplate humanity as being young on a young planet in a seemingly ageless universe, I grasp a little taste of eternity. We live in time but God sees us outside time. To God a thousand years are as but one and one as a thousand years. God sees beyond trouble and strife. He sees the seeds of everlasting life, sown by His Son Jesus Christ, fermenting and growing in His newly adopted children. I believe God smiles benevolently on His created world.
The government of the world is upon God’s shoulders and He holds all things by the power His Word. God rules the whole universe. The “whirlwind” which the prophet saw was under the throne. The wheels symbolized the government of the world in its entirety. There was an appearance “as of a wheel within a wheel,” suggesting the multiform complexities inherent in Providence. The wheel of Providence never halts and is never diverted from its purpose.
God’s ways are not our ways. Nothing is more strengthening to faith, stabilizing to the mind, or tranquilizing to the heart of a Christian, than for us to discern our Father's hand guiding, shaping, and controlling everything that enters our life. We know that He is also governing this world, and all people and events in it. We take comfort, hope and joy in the fact that God knows what He is doing and is able to do it perfectly. This is our consolation. We recognize the providence and control of God and we trust His will. Amen.

As I have seen your other website involving memorials and your background in bereavement and related issues, have you found the above text or part of it to be beneficial in counseling family members?
I love the Hub and its message, though I can't help but think the position taken and scriptural verses would apply when explaining an "untimely" death of an individual or comforting the family with questions.
This hub is very thoughtfully written and causes us to see God as he is. There are so many things that appear one way to us and different to him. As our minds are renewed, we began to see things more like him. Thank you for the message here and thanks for bringing it in love.
Big WOW. This is great. Inspiring & thought-provoking. Thank you digging deep & sharing gold nuggets.
We've been thinking alike. I loved this: "The history of the universe, from beginning to end, is planned, ruled, guided, and directed by the omniscient, omnipotent Creator God. Nothing occurs which has not been intended, either permissively or purposefully, by Jehovah God. He has providential control over all of history, despite the free will choices of man."
Yesterday I wrote this for an op-ed in the local paper: "Call me crazy, but my worldview is shaped by a handful of profound words: 'In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth . . .' An awful lot is settled for me in that opening line of Genesis: God is; God creates; the heavens and earth belong to him; and all that follows in the Bible is his story; we exist as part of his story. It’s a shocking revelation for some, but our lives on planet earth are about God, not about us."
Blessings & keep hubbing on . . .
RevLady it seems like you and I are on adjoining pages of the same book today. Your quote of 1 Corinthians 15, works well into what you are saying. I like to go a little bit further into 1 Corinthians 15 just a little bit to verses 54-57 as my Pastor last night did at an Ash Wednesday Service.
"So when this corruptible shall have put on incorruption, and this mortal shall have put on immortality, then shall be brought to pass the saying that is written,Death is swallowed up in victory. O death, where is thy sting? O Grave, where is thy victory? The sting of death is sin; and the strength of sin is the law. But thanks be to God which giveth us victory, through our Lord Jesus Christ.
This scripture brings us full circle to teach us that we should not fear death, but rejoice and live every day to the fullest in God, until the day He calls us home.
Thank you my sister, and Glory be to God Our Father, and His gifts in Christ Jesus, and The Holy Spirit.
May the love and grace of God be with you always.
Brother Dave Mathews.
RevLady, your Hub this morning was an answer to my prayer. I awoke from sleep in the wee hours of the morning worrying about my son (as I often do) who married into an unbelieving family (1-1/2 years ago). We love his wife very much - and my heart goes out to her for not knowing the Lord - but I worry that in their union my son may lose his way.
I'd prayed and cried much to the Lord before they got married, pleading that their marriage would be prevented somehow, but the wedding went forth. I also realize that I could not change my son's heart.
Presently, they live with us because our son is finishing his education, and so his wife, though often uncomfortable around our ways, at least, respects our Christianity and does not practice her lifestyle in our home.
I, daily, pray for her salvation and try to show her love as a mother should, making sure I treat her as one of my own children. Your message today lifted my spirits to believe that God is in control. I have family members that refuse to believe that in time God will work a miracle in her life (I need to believe this). They think that I should just give up on her. But I can't give up. I won't give up praying or believing.
God has done so many wonderful and marvelous things in the past for us - we are living testimony of much - that I sometimes get so excited at all that I know is possible with God, and that nothing is impossible. And yet fear and doubt does take hold of me just as often. But then I read your Hub this morning, and I just know that God IS working for us.
Again, thank you for your uplifting and inspiring Hub today. May God bless you and keep you writing/teaching!
Truer words and better advice couldn't have been said. I need to surrender my doubts and fears to Him. Thank you, RevLady, for listening, and for your advice and encouragement.
May our good Lord bless and keep you!
“All things work together for the good to them that love the Lord and are called according to his purpose”-
It's not always easy-but we need to fight the good fight.
I always appreciate the word of God, and the people that give the bread of life to others, as I said before, I'm a women of few words, but in regards to Gods word my heart is willing and my words are true because I try to use the bible to guide me, in my quest for the true word of God. So keep up the good work, I'm sure God is smiling on you. Blessings. creativeone59
As always RevLady your message is timely and as always God Ordained. It is hubs like this which open the cracks in our own fallen thinking and again return us to the basic truths found in the Word.
Still think you are going to flooded someday soon with Hubbers coming to your Church...know that you are loved by the Father and by all who read what God places on your heart that you share with us.
Blessings as we are blessed.
RevLady, this hub hit on so many nerves. What we call good and bad, is actually His will, so He doesn't perceive it the way we do - and if we get ourselves to a point where we want to see things like He does, we can become that wheel inside the wheel, rolling along, sheltered and covered by Him in all His purposes.
I also liked how you brought out His being present at every secret meeting. I believe, if the Lord wants too, he can foil any plot before it happens. I believe when people talk about 9/11 being a kind of judgment, that is what it is. America needs to realize that it cannot stop everything from happening. We need the protection of the one who has ears in every room and can stop atrocity and evil from occuring. Some might call that naive, but I tend to think of it as that faith, that belief in the rock that protects. It is like you said - it is all in His power hedge or allow. Like salt, we must keep praying and reaching out to the Lord so that those things which are good and worth keeping are preserved. Peace.
RevLady, restraint is the key word there. He has been merciful, and still is today. Wouldn't it be wonderful to see a President and Congress call for a national day of fasting and prayer like some former presidents have in tough trials and tribulations. If too many keep turning their back and ignoring, it can get a lot worse and there is nothing any man will be able to do to stop it. People need to stop believing all the hero movies where mankind always finds a way to persevere by his own intellect and wiles and start turning back to the Creator. Just had to add a little more because I loved your comment! Peace.
Wow! I was held by your first image for quite awhile...excellent choice.
“God’s ways are not our ways.” We hear it frequently as we struggle..." This is where we need, absoulutely need, submission to know and accept His way and to let our minds be transformed to it forsaking the thoughts of this world.
The interpretation of comparing the wheel within the wheel to the idea that God works all thins for Good...is fabulous! It is a very difficult concept to wrap our brains around but when we see the unfathomable ability to take something dead and make it alive or evil and make it good and just accept it...well...miricles happen. The image together with that Scripture I hope will stay with me forever.
Quote "We cannot get along without God. "end quote
this is extrememly hard to take...BUT, praise God, I do believe I am finally starting to get it and all paraise goes to God's tenacity and faithfulness.
Thank you
Ulrike Grace
"Trust his will" -- and if we truly believe in "HIM" everything can be done as well, Happy weekend and bless, Maita
This is indeed an excellent hub, very well-written, excellently done. Truly God is all Sovereign, whatever He pronounce is bound to pass, He is totally in control of everything. Thumbs up for this hub. I find it highly inspiring.
This is a powerful message RevLady! I so appreciate your teachings, they clearly are borne of the Holy Spirit!
As Christians we will suffer. We always think that God will protect us from the strife of the world, since we are His "kids". But even Jesus "learned obedience from what he suffered." Heb 5:8
It is the "tested quality of our faith" that makes us firm and produces endurance. If everything is pinwheels and lollipops, then something is wrong!
Peter warned us not to be surprised at the painful trials we would have to endure, but rather we are to rejoice that we participate in the sufferings of Christ. In the end we will be blessed. 1 Peter 4:12-16
If our faith is worth its salt then we must recognize it will be tested! God, in His Divine Providence knows what is best to make us strong in our faith. And we know that all things work together for good!
May we all glorify God in our faithfulness and Praise Him--our Loving and Sovereign God!

Rev Lady, Wonderful Message!! This is a very timely and thought provoking hub! Ezekiel chose to obey God! God communicated to him in vivid visions! The wheel could roll any where in any direction. I believe it demonstrates the presence of the Lord being everywhere! Ezekiel challenged the people to turn to God! They were obstinate and stubborn and refused to admit sin… We are living in a time when so many of the principles of God’s Word are becoming secondary and put on the back burner…
I believe all the Lord’s Word! I also realize that our hearts, intentions and minds are transparent before Him. It is important that we boldly speak the Truth of His Word in Love even at the risk of being misunderstood. We must learn to TRUST the Lord and speak forth the TRUTH of His Word “in season and out of season!” Knowing that the sincere intent is that others would come to know Jesus Christ as Lord & Savior! That we too continuously examine ourselves in the Light of His WORD!
Jude tells us to contend for the FAITH! As God’s children our ways are supposed to become more like His ways… “Let this mind be in you that was also in Christ Jesus…” As you so wonderfully stated: “Nothing is more strengthening to faith, stabilizing to the mind, or tranquilizing to the heart of a Christian, than for us to discern our Father's hand guiding, shaping, and controlling everything that enters our life. We know that He is also governing this world, and all people and events in it. We take comfort, hope and joy in the fact that God knows what He is doing and is able to do it perfectly. This is our consolation. We recognize the providence and control of God and we trust His will. Amen. Praise God! To God be The GLORY!
Thank you for sharing in His Love & Blessings!
