God of the Sadducees

The Pharisees and Sadducees hated Jesus, even though He was God's Son, and often tried to trick Him or trap Him.

Then the Sadducees, who say there is no resurrection, came to him with a question. "Teacher," they said, "Moses wrote for us that if a man's brother dies and leaves a wife but no children, the man must marry the widow and have children for his brother. Now there were seven brothers. The first one married and died without leaving any children. The second one married the widow, but he also died, leaving no child. It was the same with the third. In fact, none of the seven left any children. Last of all, the woman died too. At the resurrection whose wife will she be, since the seven were married to her?" Mark 12:16-23.

Man is in a sad state when his God fades. Yet, for many living in this twenty-first century, God has faded out and left nothing to the mind and spirit of man but a dim memory, a vague shadow of what once was.

The Sadducees were religious in the sense that they had a vague notion of a God who once lived in a glorious past. But for them, God had faded out and did not matter anymore. For them, as far as this life was concerned, God was in total and permanent eclipse.

The Sadducees of ancient Jerusalem were in charge of the temple business. They were the intelligentsia, the “old school,” the priestly aristocracy who were not the least bit interested in Jesus Christ or anything that He had to say. They had no patience with the controversy about religion, and would never have condescended themselves to notice Jesus at all had He not become so troublesome. So they joined forces with the Pharisees, to embarrass Jesus.

In the temple one day, the Sadducees presented Jesus with a question designed to make the belief in individual resurrection look ridiculous. The Jewish Law had an institution called levirate marriage. Its regulations are found in Deuteronomy 25, the point of which was to ensure that the family name continued and that property remained with the family. So the question of the Sadducees was founded on a well know Jewish law. It was simply this; if, in accordance with the regulations governing levirate marriage, one woman has married in turn to seven brothers, if there is a resurrection of the dead, whose wife is she when that resurrection come? They thought by asking that question they rendered the idea of resurrection completely ridiculous and Jesus would be made to look foolish.

As was Jesus’ custom, He did not answer the question but the questioner. This was His usual method so as to help the inquirer move from the issue’s petty peripheral to the center and to lift up all our human questions into the light of some great truth about God. Thus, He replied, “Have you not read…He is not God of the dead, but of the living.”

“When the dead rise, they will neither marry nor be given in marriage; they will be like the angels in heaven.” Mark 12:25.

Jesus immediately makes it known that when a person rises again, the old laws of physical life ceases to exist. The risen are like and equal with the angels and physical things like marrying no longer exist. The rabbinic writing themselves said that in the life to come there is: “neither eating, nor drinking, nor any begetting of children, or bargaining or jealousy or hatred or strife. All that the righteous do is to sit with their crowns on their heads and enjoy the effulgence of the [divine] Presence.” Jewish Virtual Library. It is Jesus’ point that the life to come cannot be thought of in terms of this life at all.

The Sadducees made the mistake of creating heaven in the image of earth. Men have always done so. We have all tended to create in thought a heaven arising from our own limited understanding and imagination. Perhaps, however, we would all do well to remember that Paul was right when he took the words of Isaiah (64:4) and made them his own, “No eye has seen, no ear has heard, no mind has conceived what God has prepared for those who love him.” 1 Corinthians 2:9. The life and beauty of heaven is greater than any conception this life can create.

Jesus then proceeds to deal with the fact of the resurrection.

“Now about the dead rising—have you not read in the book of Moses, in the account of the bush, how God said to him, 'I am the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob'? He is not the God of the dead, but of the living.” Mark 12:26-27.

Here He meets the Sadducees on their own ground. They insisted that in the Pentateuch, by which they set so much confidence, there was no evidence for immortality. Yet, it is from the Pentateuch that Jesus draws His proof. In Exodus 3:6, God call Himself the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac and the God of Jacob. If God is the God of these patriarchs even yet, it means that they must still be alive, for the living God must be the God of living people, and not of those who are dead. And if the patriarchs are alive then the resurrection is proved. On their own grounds, and with an argument to which they could find no answer, Jesus defeated the Sadducees.

Jesus based His conviction of the resurrection on the fact that the relationship between God and His children is one that nothing that break. God was the friend of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob when they lived. That relationship could not cease with death. God CANNOT cease to be the God of those who served Him and loved Him. The Psalmist could not conceive of his relationship with God ever being broken. Thus he declares:

“Yet I am always with you; you hold me by my right hand. You guide me with your counsel, leading me to a glorious destiny.” Psalm 73:23-24.

Regardless of how the world may ridicule Christians for our beliefs, our faith in eternal life is not based on the fanciful ideas we may entertain about heaven, not on any pictures our little minds may conjure about the future life, not on any scientific proof we may find to reinforce it. Our whole resurrection confidence, in the final analysis, is grounded in the nature and character of God. That is it in a nutshell. All our human hopes for the here and the hereafter are grounded in the nature of our God, in His utter faithfulness and trustworthiness.

Heaven
Heaven
Transfiguration
Transfiguration

So, contrary to what our critics accuse, it is not only that we desire living forever, nor the desire for reunion with loved ones who are now beyond our sight but not beyond our love. It is rather the character of God that holds us, the instinctive feeling that since the nature of God can be supremely trusted, then life here on earth makes sense.

Our God is not the God of the dead, but of the living. How could it be otherwise? When I look around me, all I see and perceive is life. I see a living universe; everything in it is alive and active. Nothing in the universe is solid, fixed static or dead, but dynamic, engaged in ceaseless motion. Think about it, we ourselves are standing on a star that is rapidly moving. Tiny worlds beneath us are moving too, miniatures of the larger worlds above. There is nothing solid anywhere. The smallest things in existence are not things but bundles of motion, energy, and LIFE.

Everything in the universe is moving and living, AND interrelating with each other. All parts fit together in a continuous scheme that emulates the human body, with all its parts related to other parts. What we call nature is just a word, just a figure of speech, just the name of the sum total of all the laws vibrating to one single, infinite thought, the God of the living universe; Intelligence working toward a higher purpose than our highest thought. And the purpose of the living God cannot be defeated, cannot be stopped, it is deathless.

The Sadducees are in every age and they stand with their heels dug into the status quo, determined to keep life back in the patterns belonging to yesterday, so inhospitable to any new light that when it shines in they put their heads together and blow it out.

Our streets are full of modern Sadducees who claim there is no resurrection. Even in our churches, there are people to whom the Christian doctrine of immortality is an inert truth, lying dormant in their minds, never to be awakened.

Sometimes I wonder how much more suffering and frustration will the world go through before we learn that the purpose of God as revealed in Christ is deathless, it is as immortal as the life of God, it is so interwoven into the hearts of man that all attempts to root it out only pushes it deeper in.

When I think about our life here on earth and the future life, I think of our earth life being as an infant in the womb. There baby lives within a warm temporary shelter getting ready for something spectacular; ears growing for sound not yet heard, eyes shaping for light not yet seen, little feet developing to walk in places not yet conceivable.

We too are getting ready for something spectacular. By instinct we know this. So we go on in our faith because we know that God is not the God of a vast graveyard, but the God of living souls, who has set us here to live in an exciting, living universe, to cooperate with an eternal, undying purpose. And because He lives, we too, for Him and with Him, shall also live. All glory to God!

“He is not the God of the dead, but of the living.”

Jerami,

I appreciate your compliment. I do plan to put some of my articles to voice as soon as I can manage the time. Some of my sermons from "back in the day" were recorded on tape which can now be transferred to CD. These are my plans. I wait to see if it is also God's plan for me. I will keep you in mind when this is achieved.

Thanks so much for stopping by and encouraging me on. God bless you!

RevLady, excellent and many solid points made. Yes, we do have the modern day Sadducees. The intellectuals. Sciences defies faith and vice versa. Science bases its findings on the tangible. Our entire spiritual belief system stems from Hebrews 11:1. Faith. A thing neither heard nor seen.

We will continually be hearing from the Pharisees and Sadduccees even today. Inside and outside of the church.

So, it shall behoove the real believer to stay in the Word, stay prayed up and when faced with questions or challenges meant to discredit or ridicule, judge the spirit by the spirit.

RevLady, you mentioned back in the day, you had sermons you would like to see on CD. Lord willing. My question is, do you see any point in your own walk with Jesus where your approach to developing a message changed?

Thank you RevLady for a great reminder, that there are Sadducees yielding power and great influence in every generation. Fortunately, the resistance to Christ's dispensation of light is folly, for His light inevitably dispels darkness; neither can it be ever blocked and hidden, nor can it be unrealized and vetoed, for it shall ultimately prevail. Let us rejoice in the Truth and the Light, even as it continues to be revealed in these Latter-days through the Prophets and through the Holy Spirit.

UG,

Your feedback is well taken and I thank you. In answer to your question:

Absolutley! As you know I entered the evangelistic ministry at age 21, later ordained and assigned to pastor my first church at age 27. In listening to my "back in the day" sermons, though I cannot pinpoint exactly when these modifications occurred, I noticed not only changes in the style of message delivery over the years, but also depth of content. This I attribute to my maturing in the faith, thirst and hunger for biblical knowledge, sensitivity to the spiritual needs of the congregation and the fluctuating norms and conditions of society and culture that impacted their personal lives.

Most recent, the progressive changes in message EMPHASIS, whether writing or speaking are highly influenced by my growing concern for the Body of Christ to LIVE the Christian life, and my disturbance by the widespread misuse of the Bible as a weapon against those who believe differently or as an arsenal of texts where the truth is ripped from context and twisted (probably more from ignorance than intention).

What has not changed over the years is my passion for strengthening the Body of Christ and ministering to suffering humanity.

TD,

AMEN my brother, AMEN.

I rejoice with you and all believers everywhere "in the Truth and the Light, even as it continues to be revealed in these Latter-days through the Prophets and through the Holy Spirit."

God bless you my brothers and may He strengthen you in the work He has assigned to you for His glory and the edification of the Body.

I especially like your analogy of babies in the womb. Eyes forming for things yet unseen. That, to me, is powerful. When contemplating that which is yet to come, I may not be able to picture it clearly, but if what I can see is any indication of what is being prepared for those who love Him, It truly is something to get excited about! The beauty of what I can see, feel, hear, taste, touch and feel is beyond the ability of words to fully capture. Our experience of the magnificence of His divine artistry causes us to be amazed and awed. How much more, what He has in store for us!

I believe with you FA, that what we are able to perceive in terms of the best God's created order has to offer, provides us a TINY glimpse into eternity's paradise. Just knowing it is beyond my ability to fathom, sets my soul to rejoicing and praising His holy name and I am encouraged to stay on the spiritual battlefield until our Father whispers, "war time is over."

It's to bad that the sadducees refused to recognize not only who they were walking and talking with, God, but also refused to believe that there is life after death throu the resurrection. Also it is to bad that they could not figure out that we, although living in a fleshly form are actually spirit beings.

Brother Dave.

DM,

You are so right. Sadly, their pride got in the way.

In talking with many people, it really does sadden me that Christians still do not understand that "although living in a fleshly form" we "are actually spirit beings." But let's keep preaching it dear brother.

Hello Reverend Lady, I also agree with Jerami, in regards to your hub today, "The only way to improve it would be to hear it as a sermon." Hearing this preached, hearing many of your hubs preached, would make such a difference.

Something that I hadn't thought about that either, we do have Sadducees walking around in this date and time, and always have.

A truly excellent hub with great truths to ponder. I am very glad that our God is the God of the living not the God of the dead. God reserves a very great future for His children. Praise God for what Jesus has done on the cross. But everytime I realize this, I am also burdened of the necessity of the Gospel to be preached among the unbelievers. Truly we have to preach the Gospel that the heathen world will also find the God of the living. Blessings to you. Have a great day.

This teaching is rich and alive! Thank you for sharing it. Two statements stood out to me.

One was, "Man is in a sad state when his God fades." Oh this is so true and you followed it up with what is right in front of our eyes, but neglected to see and that is the truth that 21st century man has faded God out to the point of him being a vague memory shadowing what used to be...This is was a powerful opener because the truth rings so clarly in this statement and yet even those who know the truth tend to look away from the stark reality of those people who walk in those shadows. Oh! if we paid attention more those harvest fields would be filled with laborers..

Also you said, "The Sadducees made the mistake of creating heaven in the image of earth" Yes, indeed and in more ways than just in thought. This comes through in what is taught in schools, what is displayed in homes and what is seen in entertainment.

I agree - it would be great to hear the semrmon!

God bless you, sister

Cristina327,

“Truly we have to preach the Gospel that the heathen world will also find the God of the living.”

I agree with you Cristina, but I also find it interesting that according to recent religious statistics, it is America that has become the NEW mission field; we are “the heathen” world. Like the Sadducees, our nation may have a vague notion of a God who once lived in a glorious past of the fathers of our country. But God is slowly being faded out.

Coffeesnob,

I rejoice in our spiritual agreement with this gospel lesson. While meditating upon this Scriptural passage, and identifying with the Sadducees, I came to an enlightened understanding of how many of us, having once, in times gone by, obtained truth, refuse to accept new truths. We cling to the God of yesterday, the God of the Old Testament, the God of the primitive, developing people and shut our minds to new revelations. Thus, we remain satisfied with our Sadducee God.

God bless you my sisters in Christ Jesus, our Lord and thank you for commenting and stirring my thoughts. It is my privilege to be in communications with you. All glory to God!

"The Sadducees made the mistake of creating heaven in the image of earth. Men have always done so. We have all tended to create in thought a heaven arising from our own limited understanding and imagination." Even in the book of Revelation, mankind continues to make this 'mistake'. In a spiritual body, the need for cities with golden streets doesn't mean it literally - but it is the best our finite mind can comprehend. What does a street of gold mean in the Spirit? A glorious and unhindered communication with the Father?

We are indeed getting ready for something spectacular. We trust and faith that it is true despite anyone's criticism. Only the Lord can let them see what we see - and if they remain blind thinking they see - they will never ask to know. Peace.

"In a spiritual body, the need for cities with golden streets doesn't mean it literally - but it is the best our finite mind can comprehend."

This is the hard truth, I believe, that our brothers and sisters experience great difficulty with. We take spritual things literally resulting in our missing the meaning or spiritual principle completely.

Your insight is profound AW and I have great respect for it. As always, I appreciate your sharing as it provides opportunity for others to gain as well.

RevLady, when I read your hubs my mind derails to other directions, they make a metaphoric switch on a metaphoric wall of thousands of switches, turn on as I go through reading your message. Often I must reread what I've read due to the light from a switch glaring into my minds eye and I turn away for a bit, either to the Bible or sometimes a comment from one I'm not familiar with will send me to their profile that often turns me to a hub written by them for a taste of their position in life. Then I return and get back on track.

I find this a good thing, as it often leads me places that hold views or answers that I've contemplated or questioned. I was in and out here many times and had to take it from the top after beginning 2 hours ago. Yet there are still much to contemplate and study, as my minds eye has been sparked by your writing.

I was led in my mind to a time while I was young sitting in a Baptist pew, listening to a Pastor preaching on streets of gold and rocks of rubies, and many precious stones, he preached as if the make up of heaven would be like bathing in precious, valuable items. I was just a kid, but I remember thinking "he's trying to bait folks to heaven with monetary gain". As a kid I had zero interest in those things, I find that sermon marked me as forty some odd years later, I still remember it and my feelings on it have not changed. I know this is a side line that I jumped on as I read and it is not your intended point. I'm just letting you know that your writing inspires me in many directions, topics and to often perform an inventory of my self to see where I think I am on my circling walk. As I punched the buttons all up, one might wonder how I could mark it funny. Anything that makes me smile is funny, and some times the direction I travel brings me to a memory in time past where I was and what was going on and sometimes those places and times were hilarious. Kinda like the poor old lady who sneezed while the heads were bowed in silent prayer, with the result of her tooting loudly on a pew, echoing through the building. All the children busted out laughing, which triggered pretty much the whole of the congregation to follow suite. Again, irrelevant, but my mind circled back to that day.

Being "living" allows such things as our memories of what was taught and what is taught, for me many years apart sometimes. Spiritual was not on my radar back then, I was still nursing as a child in learning the foundation to be built so I might move forward into coming seasons that have led me to working on the concept of becoming spiritual, eternal life, what it means to me and how it effects me. I think about being selfish in this arena, I can share my miracles and concepts, and pray for one and all. In the end I believe we all must pray for ourselves if we are going to gain knowledge and understanding resulting in Wisdom through the Holy Spirit. It's then one can teach another. I'm not mature in my walk enough to teach. I can how ever share in a positive way.

I lean on people like you, that have Wisdom and the gift of putting it down in your writings. You inspire me toward the battle of being a better person, and the battle against sins, toward spiritualist goals of being "Christlike" in my presence of other people.

I guess that was to much type but it's where my mind went. I thank you for sharing stimulating scripture. Much Peace, Love and Blessings to you and yours. Dusty

RevLady Hub Author 20 months ago

I smiled as I read your comments Dusty, for I, for a short moment, thought I had written it for it sounded so much like me.

I can be reading an article that contains a link to another article or information of interest and I click to go to it. Sometimes I find my way back to the original that day, sometimes not which I take to mean that its purpose was to be the means to the greater end that was meant specifically for me.

50, my spirit rejoices "your writing inspires me in many directions." I am so glad to know this as it again, affirms my experiences as well. I believe the Spirit takes us to places of contemplation and reflection as it relates to our individual lives that the truth meant for us may be revealed there.

I love the way your mind operates and it brings joy to my soul.

You stated, " I'm not mature in my walk enough to teach. I can how ever share in a positive way." Actually, it is in the "sharing" that many of us readers learn. So, to my mind, you are teaching through sharing. I know this is true, because I learn from you and I thank God for the growth I experience as a result.

Usually those who inspire and motivate and influence others the most are those who are least aware of it. This is good because it keeps us humble.

Thank you Dusty, for not only gracing my hub with you honesty and insight, but also for lifting my spirit this Lord's Day. I thank God for sending you my way.

May our Lord continue to direct your path and may you remain open to His loving grace.

Hi, RevLady, When I read your words, two things come to mind, one is that I love reading your 'translations' if you like on the words of the Bible, because sometimes I can sit there for ages thinking, what did that mean? but you always put it so well, and my second point is that sometimes when I read the comments that you get, I feel like I am missing out on something, I was brought up church of England, but God has obviously given me this stubborn side that always says, yeah but what if that was....and so on! lol I always have to wonder and ask, is that right? but what if that didn't mean that? etc, so my thoughts turned to scientist, I remember reading somewhere that most scientists are actually very religious, in fact science and religion are on the same path, a religious person knows already what he believes is true, and a scientist just tries to see it with his own eyes, that's me I think, but underneath I know you are right, and I think each scientist is really doing what he does best because deep down, he wants to prove that there really is a God, otherwise why would he bother being a scientist? what else is he looking for? I believe it is one and the same thing, but that's just me, I just wish my brain would shut up occasionally and stop asking questions! lol but God gave me this brain so he must want me too ask them! ha ha thanks nell

RevLady profile image

RevLady Hub Author 20 months ago

Nell,

I love your humor and your humanness. It is so very refreshing. Frankly, I think questions are what keep us searching and making discoveries. That is what the scientist does. He/she ask questions and then set out to discover the answer. What is so phenomenal is that scientists can only discover what was there "undiscovered" all the time. That is God.

Though my writings are as susceptible to imperfections as anyone’s, there are some truths we KNOW. Because He lives, we will live with Him. That is faith.

Thank you dear sister for sharing your wonderful thoughts; even putting a smile on my face.

Again, congratulations on reaching the PERFECT 100.

Mankind is so conceited as to think they know what lay ahead in our Father's home. One should question: why would Our Father would want His children to be as they were on this plane? 20th century man is a hot mess and I surely expect heaven to be a trillion times better than this hellish planet.

Thank you for your beautiful words and clarity my friend and peace to you and yours.

Hi, I would like to say that this is a fantastic article, it's showed me more depth to the Sadducees than any other website has, and even books haven't enlightened me that much. I am a year 8 student in New South Whales, Australia, and I was wondering if you could help me to answer a question that I am having trouble finding the answer to. What do you believe was two positive attributes of the Sadducees?

These are three that comes immediately to mind:

1) Their rigid conservatism. They were known for trying to keep the nation peaceful to avoid trouble for and with the Romans.

2) Unlike the Pharisees, the Sadducees did not seek to be exalted by the people.

3) They were in oppostion to the arrogant Pharisees on many points of doctrine which created a separateness between them except, of course, when they joined with the Pharisees to terminate Jesus who was a threat to both sects.

Thank you for your visit and comment Emma. I so appreciate it.

hi i have a religion assignment due and i was wondering if you could answer some questions for me?

1. what are two weaknesses of the sadducees?

2. If such a group existed today, what would be your reaction towards them?

3. (one of the questions is: create a collage of elements that the sadducees would consider important to them write a 150 word justification to accompany your colllage consider why you have made the selection of pictures you have presented)

so if you could suggest things and pictures of things that were important to them and why?

4. list 5 interesting facts on the sadducees?

thanks in advance ! xx
