Catch the Little Foxes Before They Ruin the Vineyard

A vine must have branches for without them, the vine cannot bear fruit. What is interesting about branches is that they are smaller imitations of the vine. That is to say, the vine and the branches share like natures, life, and tasks and are in a real sense, one. Branches cannot exist without the vine for it is its source of strength and existence. The branch can do nothing but yield itself to and receive its life essentials from the vine.

Scripture presents us with the image of our Lord as the true Vine and Christians as the fruit bearing branches. Every believer is a branch, a little vine in the true Vine, Jesus Christ, bearing fruit for God. Unfortunately, the fruit of many branches are being destroyed and the vines devastated by little foxes. Every lesser sin is a little fox which spoils the branches by tearing them apart and devouring the grapes. Thus Solomon said: Catch for us the foxes, the little foxes that ruin the vineyards, our vineyards that are in bloom. (Song of Solomon 2:15) and James warns, when desire has conceived, it gives birth to sin; and sin, when it is full-grown, brings forth death. (1:15).

We especially note that what is symbolized is not the wolf in sheep’s clothing that we often complain of, not the blatantly evil sins that are obvious to even weak eyes. Not even the old and wily fox Herod, as Jesus so characterized him; but the little foxes, the sins that are all too often overlooked or ignored, but are nevertheless ruining the vineyards that are in bloom.

However small or young these little foxes, or sins, may be, they have the vulpine nature. Foxes are sly and subtle creatures, mischievous and deceitful, hungry and voracious. They are cunning and will come upon us stealthily and unexpectedly to feed upon the fruit of our vines and it does not take them long to fatten into big foxes. The once little sin well fed and long nourished, outgrows any other sins in the soul’s menagerie and, it is the hardest of them all to eradicate when full grown.

As dead flies give perfume a bad smell, so a little folly outweighs wisdom and honor. Ecclesiastes 10:1

Your boasting is not good. Don't you know that a little yeast works through the whole batch of dough? 1 Corinthians 5:6

The problem with little sins is that if they are not caught and destroyed, they grow. The so-called little “white lie” soon becomes the progenitor of the big “black lie.” As it progresses in evil the once pure in heart, becomes foul and polluted with the hideous vice of lying. We must catch the little foxes before they ruin the vineyards.

Many children, trained to be truthful, honest, and upright in life, would not think of taking what did not belong to them. Yet, many adult thieves emerged from such childhood backgrounds. “Do not be misled: ‘Bad company corrupts good character.’” (1 Corinthians 15:33). Many a righteous spirit has been led astray by bad company to unlearn the well taught values distinguishing between “thine and mine.” The little fox of petty theft grows and becomes the big fox of felonious robbery. The belief system that allows for the stealing of a pen from work is the same value system of the person who steals a million dollars; the inner corruption is the same and the result is the same; it dethrones God and life begins its downward spiral. The mistake some of us make is evaluating sin according to the quantity of damage (one little pen), and not according to the quality of the crime (sin). We must catch the little foxes before they ruin the vineyards.

We think about some church members whom to us initially seemed Christian, sweet, amiable, kind. But we later learned that these same members allowed the small vexations of church life to aggravate them into becoming a thorn in the flesh to the pastor and a terror to the whole congregation. Having given in to evil temper by degrees, it finally took dominion over their minds, bodies and souls. They are human wrecks as a consequence of their little foxes becoming full grown jackals. We must catch the little foxes before they ruin the vineyards.

Apostle James warns us against the little fox of tongues. Some people are habituated to speak sharply or recklessly about everything and everybody; and scandal and slander and exaggerations and blasphemy are the big foxes which have at last developed from the little gossip of earlier days. The small whispers of evil thoughts about others behind their backs grow into whirlwinds of verbal slaughter and cyclones of linguistic assassinations against all who happen to get in the way. We must catch the little foxes before they ruin the vineyards.

In a million ways the little foxes spoil the vines with us all. The little sins ruin our lives. It was the little “bees” that worried David more than the “bulls of Bashan;” and it is in these little aggravations, as well as the little sins of life, that we most often allow ourselves to be overcome. Many Christians, who are able to bear a great devastation and resist great sins and endure great provocations, cannot tolerate a small affront. It is the wax moth that destroys the bee-hive, not the bee-martin that catches the bees. It is the crawfish which most often undermines the levee, not the flood which sweeps it away.

Many of us guard ourselves relatively well to meet the great difficulties and sins of life; but the little ones, like an army of ants, may be all through your house before you know it; and an army of ants once invaded in your home is harder to destroy than a guerilla at your door.

We keep vigilant look out for the big foxes and guard against them if we are prudent, but we seldom watch for the little ones until it is too late. Our little sins sneak upon us and tear our vines before we recognize their presence. And maybe worst of all, we so neglect or ignore their growth and power that we become the prey of the full grown brood before we become seriously concerned about our condition. We must catch the little foxes before they ruin the vineyards.

How easily one little sin overthrew the perfect Adam and Eve and what misery and evil has followed. The more pure and holy the heart, the more delicate it is to stain which is what is meant by tender grapes and why it is so very important that we catch the little foxes before they ruin us.

Catching the little foxes is important because our vines have tender grapes and are easily spoiled. But the grapes of the Christian vine are the tenderest. Nothing is so easily soiled as a Christian’s reputation or character, and nothing is so readily tainted and poisoned as Christian purity and piety. All other reputations and characters, all other virtues or integrity can stand a greater shock in the world’s eyes than Christians.

Nothing, according to human standards, is as fragile as religion, especially the Christian faith. By reason of our sinful natures, our susceptibility to satanic influence and delusion, our everyday contact with worldliness and temptation, when we fall into err, we are the most conspicuous and the worst hurt of all humanity.

Catch for us the foxes, the little foxes that ruin the vineyards, our vineyards that are in bloom.

Then, when desire has conceived, it gives birth to sin; and sin, when it is full-grown, brings forth death. James 1:15

We must rid ourselves of these sly little foxes (our carnal leanings) if we would attain God's best for our lives. One may escape our notice now and then, of course, but we must determine to keep their pack out and let the Good Shepherd and Lord of the Vineyard rule over the lands of our souls. We must stay on the little fox’s trails within our vineyards until the last is slain and the Garden of God's vineyard flourish again under perfect obedience to the Spirit's truth. We must catch the little foxes before they ruin the vineyards.

Then, after desire has conceived, it gives birth to sin; and sin, when it is full-grown, gives birth to death.

You have great insight. So many become swayed by the world and compromise inch by inch and find themselves in quicksand. The trend greatly disturbs me and brings me more strength to remain apart from the world. Thanks for this enlightening Hub. HB

The thing about small sins is that because they are small we brush them off, thus it turns into a bigger sin. When we tell little white lies, not only do we have to tell more and bigger lies to cover the original white lie, but we start to believe our own lies.

I like what you said about church members words and attitudes. An area I need to consider. It's too easy to criticize and complain when our expectations, which aren't from God, don't get met. One thing I am learning about life is that is more conducive to focus on the solution rather than the problem. What is my part, how can I come alongside rather that groan without considering what others are going through or what their thoughts are on the issues at hand.

I am going to be more mindful of the little foxes, and the big ones too. BTW, your images are quite cute. We have a lot of foxes where I live in the country. They are beautiful, but like you said, they are cunning, crafty, voracious and stealthy. Much like our enemy Satan.

Thank you dear Revlady, a good word for us all. I would love to meet you some day. If not in this life, then the kingdom of heaven.

Blessings abundant.

Many good thoughts and advice. I like the analogy you use in this paragraph. "Many of us guard ourselves relatively well to meet the great difficulties and sins of life; but the little ones, like an army of ants, may be all through your house before you know it; and an army of ants once invaded in your home is harder to destroy than a guerilla at your door." Dear Rev Lady, my sister and friend,

Thank you for a wonderful reminder to pay attention to those little foxes in our lives..I am sure the spirit of God will bring to mind and show us where these little foxes live but sometimes we don't stop and listen to the warnings of the Lord..thinking oh this may not be that bad and before long we have a whole den of little foxes..I love this analogy. God bless you Rev Lady..will have to book mark this for sure..

Hyphenbird,

I too am disturbed by the apparent way the world is going. It is not good and I have great concern for what our children and grandchildren will have to contend with.

Lambservant, I enjoyed reading your insightful comment. Foxes are really beautiful creatures, but as you stated, we must remain alert to their behavior, lest we find ourselves in deep trouble.

I also agree regarding the body of Christ. Too many are too critical which often times kills the spirit of others. Even though criticism is sometimes necessary, I think we should be careful in selecting our words to convey our disagreement.

Lifegate, thank you for your thoughts, support and affirmations. It is elevating to my spirit when the body of Christ is on one accord.

Sunnie Day,

Sometimes, we can pay so much attention to the "big" sings that we miss the "little" sins that are stealthily growing. We must be vigilent in staying alert by keeping in His Word, and prayer.

AE,

How true is your word, dear friend. Some of our childhood learnings must be edited, some modified, some enhanced and others totally deleted.

God bless you my brothers and sisters in Him who is to come!

RevLady: What an interesting perspective. Every christian is a branch bearing fruit. This is a beautiful Hub and raises certain questions.

RevLady please don't get to upset if I raise certain points as a constructive critiquing of some points made in this hub. Sorry for the hub sized comment response.

Every lesser sin is a little fox destroying the fruits.

I find this line interesting for I never knew that there were lesser sins in the eyes of God or Jesus.

I have always thought that a sin is a sin and that God detested all sin.

I understand the point you are trying to get across, but there is no such thing as a lesser sin or a little white lie, even, a slip of the tongue, and the application of these descriptives could be seen as misleading.

There is no such thing as a woman being a little bit, or sort of pregnant. She either is or isn't pregnant the degree is merely in the length of time, and not the fact of being.

In closing let me say that "Christian faith" true "Christan Faith" of a "Born Again in Christ" Christian should not be perceived as "Fragile". No true "Christian" need fear their possible sinful nature, since their sins past present and future are already forgiven and cleansed by the blood of the lamb. Also if vigilant, as a Christian, they need not fear or feel susceptible to satan's influences, for a good Christian should be on the alert and expectant of such attacks and know that God,Jesus the Holy Spirit and the "Word of God" is the best protection any person could ask for.

So long as we are in our fleshly states, we are fair game for satan and his carnal attacks but God's word is our shield from harm and as long as we stand strong in our faith and in God's Holy Word, Our spirit is safe, even if and when our fleshly body is destroyed and is no longer.

not sure where my previous message went so if you get two delete one.

Your message is resonating with what I believe to be working in me currently. Not letting those little things go as if they are somehow trivial. When the big things are out of the way it is much too easy to allow ourselves permission to let the little foxes hang around.

A well explained Bible metaphor.

Encouraged today to not let those foxes spoil my fellowship and the life giving flow of His spirit in me.

Rev Lady, a good message that brought forth thoughts and discussion, which I view as a good thing as long as it remains civil, I can keep my mind open, then consider all angles and how they apply to myself.

I once viewed my little foxes as just that, often excusing my self, justifying my actions as small and easily over looked. I found that the little foxes and over looking them led to ease in increase of what ever I considered "Little".

I worked as a mechanic and taking a $.45 cent quart of oil to top off the crank case of my engine seemed little, over time it grew into 5 quarts of oil and a filter then changing my oil while being paid to be working on a customer vehicle. I know now that the act of stealing the one quart was as bad as stealing all the things that culminated in an engine service. The little foxes just made my transition to getting carried away with being a "thief" easier. In the beginning I would have considered taking a complete service package and then taking the "time" getting paid while the boss was at lunch, a brash inexcusable action worthy of job termination. Then came a breakfast meeting that was called by the main vine that counted quarts bought and quarts sold. The vine paid for my breakfast and the breakfast of all the other branches to tell us that we were basically clipping off the rewards of healthy branches, 100 pieces of fruit supplied to the branches but only 50 pieces of fruit harvested, resulting in no gains for the vine, thus no extra benefits for the branches. I was stealing my own pay raise and killing the chance of receiving the reward of a payed vacation from toil.

I had to re-evaluate what it was I was doing for what it was in total, be it a single quart or the whole thing, I was cutting off the possibility of any reward.

Sorry for going on so long here but you inspired me to look back at a time when the realization of my foxes were just flat out wrong at any level. I realize that being part of the world, it gives ratings to one sin or crime being worse than another and hearing that untruth enough times I had become one with the world in my evaluation of sins and held one worse than another. Stepping out of the world and taking biblical stance I found myself guilty of sin falling short with the punishment being death, as well as setting a stage as a branch that other branches saw as a thing that they could do as well, leaving me guilty of yet more sin, promoting it seemingly successfully to all watching.

I find that this is where churchianity has come apart for the masses, teaching wrong as right or not so bad as other things we might do instead.

I'm shutting up as I can't say anything more and feel that I echoed your intended message [at least to some degree]

God Bless You, much Peace and Love, Dusty

Brother Dave, I read your comment and I agree that a sin is a sin, and that did cross my mind when I read this hub. I can't really speak for our beloved RevLady, but my perception of the little foxes or sins, was that we tend to convince ourselves that certain actions we do are not equal to murder, robbing banks, etc therefore they are small, lesser sins. It's what we convince ourselves when they are our personal sins. And unfortunately, when others do these sins, we tend to look at them as big sins on there part.

I believe the Holy Spirit spoke in this hub. It seems that many of us who have commented have been convicted and had to stop and look at ourselves and make some adjustments in our walk and obedience to Christ. Blessings one and all.

lambservant: I know what you are saying as I also understand what RevLady is saying, but, to try and minimize, or trivialize the fact that any sin no matter whether it be theft, murder, or lying, a sin is a sin and Christ Jesus receives another lash of the whip on his back, or another wack of the hammer on those spikes, driving them deeper and causing more pain, not to mention the suffering of that sin being heaped upon an innocent man.

Saundra, sin is cunning and deceptive as you say, like a fox. Ezekiel says that the soul that sinneth shall die. We are all sold under sin (Romans 7:14). Like Paul, we struggle in this carnal body to rid ourselves of the habits we know to be wrong and destructive. I think Dusty's example of how a little sin can quickly grow, exemplifies the last verse you presented. There really aren't any small sins because all of them wear down our defenses and inspire us to do a little more sin. The best way to handle them is to stop them when they start, keep them out of the garden, catch them while they are small, before they become some bigger and more destructive. Peace

Well as I see it Rev sin is sin no matter how small or large it is its still sin, the only way out of it is to speak the truth all the times, yes it may hurt some, but at least you know in your mind you have spoken what God wants from you the truth.

We must not let sin take control of us, we are to bring God in to have control over us, then how can we sin

RevLady, You have made some very interesting and significant points! This gives us further spiritual insight to the importance of readily dealing sin. The analogy of the fox is brilliant because the fox represents being "cunning" or shrewd! As you well stated: “Foxes are sly and subtle creatures, mischievous and deceitful, hungry and voracious. They are cunning and will come upon us stealthily and unexpectedly to feed upon the fruit of our vines and it does not take them long to fatten into big foxes…” Wise observations!

There is much spiritual warfare about us and you have provided some very helpful suggestions to help us better navigate through it…. It is unrelenting and wants to undermine the credibility of living a life committed to the Lord’s Will & Way..> and instead entice one to "walk in the flesh!" Sin wants to derail us and discourage others from living a consecrated life to the Lord!

“We must rid ourselves of these sly little foxes (our carnal leanings) if we would attain God's best for our lives. One may escape our notice now and then, of course, but we must determine to keep their pack out and let the Good Shepherd and Lord of the Vineyard rule over the lands of our souls” Amen! & AMEN! Better yet embrace the principle in this simple Praise Song! “Jesus Be A Fence All Around Me!” We so need to daily ask for the infilling presence of the Lord’s Holy Spirit! Much wisdom here! There is always room for improvement…. Thank you for “speaking the TRUTH in Love! We are certainly living in perilous times...

Thank you as ALWAYS for sharing, In HIS Love, Grace, Joy, Peace & Blessings!

RT,

It seems strange to me that you are experiencing difficulty with hp in regards to your Christian writings. I have not encountered it thus far and have no idea what triggers their rejection of yours. Strange indeed.

DM,

You are right of course. From the perspective of sin in general, there is no such thing as a little sin or a big sin. In the sight of God, there are no little or big sins. Every sin is disobedience towards God, deserving of the wrath of God and requires the blood of Christ for expiation.

Yet, Scripture also reveals that in the sight of God, some sins are indeed worse than others and have greater consequences to sinners. Some sins bring stiffer penalties and greater condemnation; thus, greater and lesser sins. One example is when Jesus said, “You would have no power over me if it were not given to you from above. Therefore the one who handed me over to you is guilty of a Greater Sin.” While ALL sin results in separation from God or condemnation, not all sins have the same consequences. Some sins are less substantial than others are, but if not stamped out immediately, lesser sins can become greater sins with greater divine consequences.

Your pregnancy example is well taken. But I think it can also be viewed from the perspective that a woman who is two weeks pregnant may not know she is pregnant as the fetus is yet undeveloped. As time progresses and other symptoms appear, she may begin to suspect something is not right and after visiting the doctor or home pregnancy testing learns she is pregnant. The point being that though pregnancy is pregnancy, as sin is sin, we may not be aware of the undeveloped sin (little foxes) until it is progressed. Thus, I believe is the metaphorical context of Solomon’s words.

Tamarajo,

“When the big things are out of the way it is much too easy to allow ourselves permission to let the little foxes hang around.” AMEN! The truth shall set us free!!

Dusty,

I enjoyed reading your comment Dusty and you made some important affirmations. Of particular note is how some of us Christians tend to ignore what we believe to be “little sins” not realizing that if not destroyed, will damage our relationship with God.

Lambservant,

We are in full agreement. I think Brother Dave and I are in agreement but viewing different sides of the same coin in different context; metaphorical versus literal.

AW,

An excellent condensed summary and insight of what I was attempting to convey.

RT,

AMEN!

DeBorrah,

It is so important, that we remain vigilant on our Christian journey as the enemy uses all his power to deceive us and lead us away from our Lord. And as you emphasized, one of his strategies is to undermine the Christian’s walk with God and “derail us.”

“Better yet embrace the principle in this simple Praise Song! “Jesus Be A Fence All Around Me!” We so need to daily ask for the infilling presence of the Lord’s Holy Spirit!” This is my prayer and I hope, the prayer of all true believers.

Thank you all for the fervency of your comments. It is so inspiring to my soul when we share in Christian love and understanding. I learn so much from you and thank God for using you as His instruments for assisting me in my own spiritual personal growth and development. Please, do not stop. I love the body of Christ. All glory to God!!

May God bless you for Christ's sake,

Rev Lady, gotta love the comments section! I have been taught by thought of some of the exchanges here. My Bro' Dave set forth interesting thoughts for me as I read along.

Your comment in return brought to my thought that indeed there exist sins holding a higher price, the one you pointed out and then as I paused I remembered a reading, I don't remember exactly from where in the New Testament it was loosely "let not many aspire to be teachers don't you know you will be judged twice for sins" something to that effect that seemed to me that teaching a sin to many, their fall will become the teachers fall. Is that considered another example of a greater price? Seems to me it is.

Dave's last comment is of great value if I get it right, is a topic of interest to me that I consider "blameless sin" and have wondered about people who have been born into a false religion and taught wrong from childhood then remaining faithful to the religion their whole life and commit a sin they don't know is a "wrongful" teaching, will it be viewed as a lesser or blameless sin except to the teacher?

I ask because as an eternal student I get teachings and clarifications that make me realize I have been ignorantly wrong on some issues.

Peace and Love, dust

Dusty, I think it helps if we view "religion" itself as being wrong because then we can understand that no one is getting "all" the right answers. Truth and honesty and the ability to know right and wrong are written on everyone's heart, no matter what religion, nation or race they are born into. Everyone is capable of overcoming any teachings they recieve in life, both good and bad. In a sense, we are all taught many things that are wrong as children, even if we are born into good Christian homes. "Obedience" to Christ makes life not so much a "do-it-by-the-book" kind of thing, but a willingness to hear Him daily, and make the correct choice. And everyone in every religion and every culture makes those choices a thousand times a day. Hope that helps some. Peace

A comment to sweetie1 well it does not have to be wine, as you say in your country there's no room to grow, but this does indecate that evil can be controlled, by receiving the better things in life and disgarding the worser things, God wants us to have the better, then we will not be burdened down by the evil pressures.

DM, Dusty

Sinning in ignorance is nevertheless still sin and makes us guilty before God, and must be dealt with. Remember, Luke tells us, ignorance of sin is no longer an excuse! For a time Scripture says, God “winked at our ignorance” but now there is no excuse, because He has written His laws on our hearts and minds and the Holy Spirit convicts us. Though God deals patiently and kindly with the ignorant, He desires His children KNOW their guilt and repent. Reference Acts 17:30-31.

Ignorance is common to all sins. The Good News is that believers’ sins are covered by the blood of Jesus. His blood cleanses us from all sin including sins done in ignorance.

RT,

Interesting. Let us know the results.

A most awesome hub, RevLady, forcing us to take a really good, deep look at ourselves. The little sins (the little foxes) is what really do the most damage in the end. And in all honesty, I think that many of us have never looked at the little sins as the destroyer of our souls, chipping away little by little...

I heard once, in a Hallmark movie, though I can't for the life of me remember the name, "The truth, artfully told is still a lie." No different, then, when we allow ourselves to commit sin, and convince ourselves that is not such a "big sin." Without notice we'll find that we are committing this same sin more and more often. God forbid!

Thank you for always being there to enlighten us, Reverend Lady, you are our rock, and I pray that God continues to empower you with His knowledge and strength, by His Holy Spirit.

Much love and really BIG hugs, in Christ Jesus,

~Virginia

Spot on WBA! All glory to God, you are so RIGHT!

VKA, good to have your comment. It always adds a touch of grace to my hubs. Thank you.

Though most of us do not have to worry about blatant sins of murder, treachery so forth, we do need to be vigilently aware of how we speak to others, what we say about others, whether or not we keep extra money given to us by mistake, and so forth. These are some of the sins, like you indicated, we justify for. Yet, in God's sight, the heart reveals something more deadly.

Love and big hugs in our Lord,
