Bread of Spiritual Truth
74
Bread, we know, is the basic need of life. Certainly, the problem of accessing it consumes a significant portion of man’s energies and connects us with the great network of divine and human relationships.
When Satan launches his verbal attack against Jesus in tempting (testing) Him to turn stones into bread, Jesus assails him with, “Man does not live on bread alone.” He is quoting from Deuteronomy 8:3. "He humbled you, causing you to hunger and then feeding you with manna, which neither you nor your fathers had known, to teach you that man does not live on bread alone but on every word that comes from the mouth of the Lord."
This is not to intimate that Jesus was unconcerned about our daily bread for history clearly reveals God’s concern for our physical needs. God told Moses, "I will rain down bread from heaven for you. The people are to go out each day and gather enough for that day." Exodus 16:4. Isaiah's vision of the future age included the promise: "They will neither hunger nor thirst. Isaiah 49:10a.
We do live by bread and economic justice is certainly a concern of Christianity. But, man does not live by bread alone. Jesus clearly understood how futile it is to treat the symptom without addressing the disease. Men are hungry, but the question is why? To my mind, the real cure to hunger is to remove the causes and these causes are in men’s hearts and souls.
Jesus taught us to pray, “Give us today our daily bread. But as sensitive as He was to the physical needs of man, He saw with penetrating insight the cause of the bread problem. He knew it was not an issue of bread alone but that it was rooted in spiritual deprivation and could only be resolved by saving people from their sins. Thus, He said, “Man does not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God.’ ” Matthew 4:4. Jesus knew that if men lived by the higher laws of the Father’s will, there would be no bread problem.
When we contemplate the factors upon which our bread depends, we cannot avoid the biblical notion of stewardship. The relationship between humans and the earth is obvious. The earth is our temporal physical home and out of its energy springs the nourishment of all life. It is amazing to realize how precarious our existence is here on planet earth. All that really stands between us and extinction is a thin layer of dirt which we call “topsoil.”
For it is from the minerals and other nutrients in topsoil that everything gets its existence, plants, trees, animals and man. Lose that and life as we know it ceases to exist. It is a vital resource and crucial to survival of all living beings. Our civilization depends on the fertility of soil, yet soil scientist Daniel Richter says the soils of the world have been so changed by humans that it is now appropriate to call this the "Anthropocene (or man-made) Age." And way back in 1937, President Franklin D. Roosevelt said "The nation that destroys its soil, destroys itself."
It occurred to me that the story of Eden is, in many ways, the story of man placed here in the Garden of Earth with its wondrous beauty to behold. We were to care for it, live off its fruits, develop life around it. But when we forget the Source of life, when we become exploiters and spoilers and sin against the land from which our existence depends, something in the land seems to strikes back and drive us from the garden into a desolate desert. We can trace this tragic story all through human history from Adam on; man’s sins against the land, his persistent failure to be good stewards of the earth and to understand his relationship to the soil out of which he himself was brought forth.
Not only that, but by our very existence here on earth we are involved in a world family. It cannot be denied that we are interconnected and must learn to love and live with each other, lest we destroy the earth and our existence with it. Unless we behave like a family, work together with each other in love, patience, understanding, and tolerance, we shall surely die.
God has written His Word into the nature of earth that man, to survive in it, must be good stewards. According to the United Nations World Food Programme (WPF), “even the world's population has grown 6-fold in the past 200 years; food production has grown even faster. In purely quantitative terms, there is enough food available to feed the entire global population of 6.7 billion people. And yet, one in nearly seven people is going hungry.”
So why is it that one in nearly seven people are hungry? Is it that God’s good earth will not give its abundance? Is it that the physical laws are malfunctioning or that Divine providence is inoperative? Of course not; it is because of a failure in the hearts and minds of man that is preventing Divine providence from getting through.
We cannot keep Christianity out of economics, or keep Christ shut up in a church. “Seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness,” Jesus said. All the Kingdom laws are righteous laws. The laws by which the farmer gets his crops, the laws by which the chemist discover cures, all the laws of nature are the expression of His righteous will.
And yet, man does not live by bread alone. There are other higher laws than the laws of nature to which man must be obedient, must be cooperative as we seek to secure bread. Ethical, social, spiritual laws must be complied with before the providence of God can fully function for our good.
“Our Father, give us this day our daily bread.” Notice, “Our Father - our bread - give us.” Brotherhood is a law. Love, justice, righteousness; these are laws of humanity. In the blind rejection of these laws, the providence of God is virtually inactivated.
There is enough bread for the human family when we behave like a family; when we live by God’s laws of brotherhood and work cooperatively together in sharing the fruits of the garden and gifts of providence. Of course, there will never be enough to support us when we choose to engage in family quarrels, civil strife, economic war, and in greedy rivalry to corner and control the resources. When we fight over bread, leaping at each in battle for bread, we destroy the bread. When we forget that the bread is the Lord’s and start flinging it at each other, we recklessly contaminate the bread and corrupt ourselves.
Jesus took bread one night in an upper room and after giving thanks, divided it, gave it to His disciples saying, "This is my body given for you.” He took common bread and made it the symbol of His spirit. Material bread is necessary for existence, but without God there is no bread.
Apostle John reports Jesus declaring He is the “bread of life” and all those in Him will neither hunger nor thirst. Life then, means more than existence. Real LIFE is embedded in our relationship with each other and our relationship with God, a relationship of trust and obedience made possible only through Jesus Christ. Without Jesus, one may have existence, but not LIFE . Just as physical bread is essential to physical existence, so Jesus is essential to spiritual LIFE, He is our true Source of sustenance. The ravenousness of the human condition is ended when we know Christ and through Him know God. The restless spirit is calmed, the hungry soul is fed.
We thank God that ours is not a depleted planet yet. Wonderful energies are still in waiting to be discovered and put to good use. We have an abundance of untouched power in the waters, in the sun, in the soil, in plants and in the atom. God has prepared His earth to be a blessing to man. Let us not transform it into a barren land.
“Jesus replied: “I am the bread that gives life! No one who comes to me will ever be hungry. No one who has faith in me will ever be thirsty.”
Break Thou the Bread of Life
Break Thou the bread of life, dear Lord, to me,
As Thou didst break the loaves beside the sea;
Beyond the sacred page I seek Thee, Lord;
My spirit pants for Thee, O living Word!
Bless Thou the truth, dear Lord, to me, to me,
As Thou didst bless the bread by Galilee;
Then shall bondage cease, all fetters fall;
And I shall find my peace, my all in all.
Thou art the bread of life, O Lord, to me,
Thy holy Word the truth that saveth me;
Give me to eat and live with Thee above;
Teach me to love Thy truth, for Thou art love.
O send Thy Spirit, Lord, now unto me,
That it may touch my eyes, and make me see:
Show me the truth concealed within Thy Word,
And in Thy Book revealed I see the Lord.

Great hub there is a lot to be learned from it. You sure know how to write an interesting religious Hub.
A wonderful hub with so many fine messages. The bread of Life, how beautiful. God Bless You Dear Heart.
RevLady, you've done it again! Another great feast of spiritual food. Thank you for being such a blessing to so many of us!
Thank you Revlady for a thought provoking hub, we can't have life without the bread of Life. Thank you for sharing. Godspeed. creativeone59
Great word Revlady!!! Keep up the good work.
hello young lady,
once again u have clearly demonstrated that awsome God given heart, and talent of yours, for this "Food For Thought", Well Done! Keep going, for this Loss and Dying World, is truly in need, of ones, such as you!
Pastor, while we do in fact have in abundance of food in this world, there will always be places where it is arbitrarily tossed for being a day or so old while that same food would be a gourmet in other areas. Those with the means and funds acquire the overabundance while those with minimal means and no funds will suffer. It is not what Christ would want. However, he did anticipate the greed.
The concept of what God does provide for us is promised. Yes, there is a sharp difference between mere existance and life. With that bread being God's Word, what we put in ourselves and in our spirit dictates to a large extent what shall come out.
The argument of,"What goes in a man's body does not defile him as does what comes out." This is a statement which truly needs examination to be truly understood to resolve the question for you. There is one passage which does resolve it. What is it?
Pastor Saundra, I feel you on all levels of this position
and yet there is room for a secondary Hub here to extend it out to another level. I know you see it.
Another excellent hub, from you RevLady! May Blessings Abound to You:)
I agree with the other comments that this was a very good thought provoking hub! Your hub made me remember a saying that my mom always said to my sister and I when we were kids. "If we cannot give to others while we have plenty, then how are we going to give away our last loaf of bread in the last days, when it is worth more than gold?"
It does amaze me that God placed 1/4 inch of soil to seperate us from extinction and throughout time it has been enough. Great hub!
RevLady: Bread is indeed a fundamental staple in our lives and what is more interesting is in it's making, as ingredients are added and mixed and then folded or kneaded in, as are we all as humans in society around the world.
Brother Dave.
RevLady,
As always, thanks for so much good information. I especially took note of this line, "Unless we behave like a family, work together with each other in love, patience, understanding, and tolerance, we shall surely die." That word "unless" is a big word. Thanks again.
Rev Lady, again you have given some chewy bread to chew on. There are many things that came to mind here as I read. The prospective of the Word being bread to the actual bread for eating where many have over abundance and others starve. Yahshua told us the poor will always be with us, and that statement said a lot, poor in spirit to poor in necessities of life.
I think Gordon Lightfoot said in one of his songs "the house you live in will never fall down, as long as you pity the stranger who stands at your gate" I found that song quite profound as I did this article.
Stay Blessed, Dusty
Another great hub, RevLady. You might say that this hub contains bread to my soul. May God's inspiration give you many more anointed thoughts to share with us!

Hello Reverend Lady,
That is so true, “Unless we behave like a family, work together with each other in love, patience, understanding, and tolerance, we shall surely die.” But teaching "love" begins at home first, by teaching our children, and remembering that we must also know how to lead – be good stewards - with Christ before us, Christ centered in our lives, our homes.
Without God’s love in us we are selfish, greedy and self-centered; no one then else matters but me, me, and me.
“Break Thou the Bread of Life,” I make this my prayer today.
A beautiful hub, RevLady!
May God bless, keep and protect you, today and always :)
Here's sending you love and BIG hugs, in Christ Jesus,
VKA

Hi RevLady... as always a fantastic read with so many gems hidden within. Thank you as always, I quote
"To my mind, the real cure to hunger is to remove the causes and these causes are in men’s hearts and souls".
Well spoken and well received as we all hunger but what is it which causes the hunger.
Blessings and Hugs
Excellent hub with great insights to ponder. Truly great words of wisdom. I love what you say:
"Without Jesus, one may have existence, but not LIFE . Just as physical bread is essential to physical existence, so Jesus is essential to spiritual LIFE, He is our true Source of sustenance."
A great truth indeed. Thank you for sharing this precious truths here at Hubpages. Blessings to you. Regards.
may God bless you RevLady....
This is simply a blessed message of Christ.
Rev Lady, Wonderful treatise! Much to ponder here! The Word of God is the “Bread of Life” It is very important to know as believers that we Need the Word of God. It is our Spiritual Food! When we digest and implement it in our daily lives we are then able to grow spiritually!
“Jesus taught us to pray, “Give us today our daily bread. But as sensitive as He was to the physical needs of man, He saw with penetrating insight the cause of the bread problem. He knew it was not an issue of bread alone but that it was rooted in spiritual deprivation and could only be resolved by saving people from their sins.” Amen & Amen! This is why we ALL need Him as Savior and Lord as our Creator He really does know what is best for us! Prayer is essentially indispensable it is how we communicate with Him!
“Life then, means more than existence. Real LIFE is embedded in our relationship with each other and our relationship with God, a relationship of trust and obedience made possible only through Jesus Christ. Without Jesus, one may have existence, but not LIFE . Just as physical bread is essential to physical existence, so Jesus is essential to spiritual LIFE, He is our true Source of sustenance .” Amen & Amen!! It is through Jesus Christ we discover true spiritual connectedness! Through Him is were we can discover true unity and what it means to be a part of a universal family!
Thank You for sharing there is much spiritual food here for us to feast upon.. In HIS Love, Joy Peace & Blessings!
All I can say is THE TRUTH WILL SET US FREE and this Hub is truth!! YES!!!! AMEN! GREAT, GREAT Writing....
Revlady, your statement about topsoil drew me in. I garden and in so doing thrill as much at building soil as growing a good food crop. But, I have to agree with DeBorrah. Your article really drives home the call to become family, to become one with one another in ways that are patient and loving, sensitive and caring. How else do we as Christians stand out from the crowd? How else do we get the opening to share the Bread of Life in ways that are profitable to the Kingdom?
It is absolutely amazing how you keep churning out these deep and intensive studies. The depth of this work is soul-food satisfying. As you know from what I have written in the past, I am not fond of a system of government that puts entitlement and ownership, especially land ownership before the people who live on it. People should have the right to grow and let the Lord give growth to those who are so blessed, even if it be through thorns and thistles as stated in Genesis 3:17-19. But the Cain's of the world, by force and law, took ownership, and made their brothers provide what they themselves could not grow (Genesis 4:10-12) - as you said, "the basic need of life."
When we realize that we do not live by bread alone but by every word from the mouth of Yah - then we realize that our brothers in the flesh who own everything might be in a position to starve us physically, but our spirit thrives. Peace.
This was a beautiful message, RevLady, that I think many people do not recognize. The way we treat our environment is a great concern to me, because earth is God's gift to us, it is our home. Shouldn't we have respect for what He created?
I agree that, "We cannot keep Christianity out of economics." I see being environmentally aware and concerned as a way of appreciating God's creation and fulfilling His desire that we take care of His work.
"Jesus clearly understood how futile it is to treat the symptom without addressing the disease. Men are hungry...real problem spiritual deprivation." So true. I thought of the portion of scripture when the disciples thought Jesus was angry with them because they forgot the bread and Jesus seems frustrated that they do not understand He isn't speaking of their physical provisions.
"a failure in the hearts and minds of man that is preventing Divine providence from getting through" When all is said and done God won't be to blame. When He is asked how could you let this happen? He will be entitled the same question how could we let this happen?
love once again the concluding hymn.
Good rning RevLady. In reading the comments for your hub I am finding myself wondering why so many members of the church I attend seem so apathetic towards the Spiritual Bread of Life as I wrote in my last hub. I know that the Lord has always kept a remnant of His faithful people, only I'm just now understanding that He doesn't always keep them in the same place. I'm sitting here thinking about the Spiritual Fire that could blaze under His control if all of His faithful ones could be in one spot at the same time. Oh, what a revival that would explode! Wouldn't it be just wonderful?
This is an inspirational message to all that men really do not live by bread alone. I agree with you that when we accept Jesus into our life, things will never be the same again. We need every word of God to nourish our spiritual being. This is also a good reminder on how we can fight temptation through Jesus’ example. You’ve shared a beautiful poem, too.
I pray this Hub will touch many! It sure touched me!! Thank you! Voted-Up!

Thank you RevLady for another beautiful piece of work. I liked all the pictures that went with the explanation of bread of life. Blessings:)
