A Vertical Look at the Cause of War (Pt II)

God’s Authority
Biblically, ever since mankind was divided into nations, there have always been kings, rulers, presidents. The sadness lay in the fact that from the beginning of national life, there has been a consistent record of devastating wars involving both Jews and Gentiles. Greed, pride, covetousness, ambition have resulted in terrible and horrific wars and prisoners-of-wars leaving a legacy of great anguish and sorrows for multitudes of innocent people.
War is not only a consequence of sin, but also an expression of sin itself. The government of this country cannot ease our mental stress because we realize that even after Presidents Bush and Obama, after all the peace negotiations; the situation in this world is still grave. In response to his claim to the Christian faith, a journalist poses an interesting question: Obama and War: What Would Jesus Do?
What is the Christian Response?
But God has willed that there should be states and governments. He has willed the powers that be: “there is no authority except that which God has established. The authorities that exist have been established by God.” (Romans 13:1).
As history has proven time and time again, God, according to His own ordained schedule, will halt man’s foolishness; cruel, godless rulers and governments are crushed by His mighty power. All rulers are dependent upon His sovereignty. “So the Lord said to Solomon, "Since this is your attitude and you have not kept my covenant and my decrees, which I commanded you, I will most certainly tear the kingdom away from you and give it to one of your subordinates.” 1 Kings 11:11.
We recall the incident where David, although a great king, was severely punished for trusting that deliverance from his enemies was dependent upon a large battalion (in the Old Testament the primary reason for taking a census was to know the size of a nation’s army and its ability to win wars against other people). God never said He would support big battalions. Regardless of how hard the world seeks to convince us otherwise, national security is not dependent upon strong armed forces, or even the possessor of the most lethal of weapons. No ruler is immune from defeat or disaster because of what he has, whether small or large or deadly. National prosperity and peace are ordained by God. “Woe to those who go down to Egypt for help, who rely on horses, who trust in the multitude of their chariots and in the great strength of their horsemen, but do not look to the Holy One of Israel, or seek help from the Lord.” Isaiah 31:1.
You probably remember that King Hezekiah received the promise of deliverance from the overwhelming forces of Assyria because he recognized his utter helplessness to do anything apart from God. “O Lord, God of Israel, enthroned between the cherubim, you alone are God over all the kingdoms of the earth.” (2 Kings 19:15). In the end, God did it ALL. Hezekiah did not raise a finger in his defense. The Assyrian army of a hundred and eighty-five thousand men were killed by one little angel. (2 Kings 19:34-35). A firm, unshakable faith in God, and the recognition of Him in every phase of national life, is the strongest and most impregnable defense any nation can have. As King of nations, ruling the world by His power and providence, and overruling all the affairs of the children of men to His own glory; God does according to His will among the people of the earth.
Primitive Mentality
The Bible is replete with stories of long wars between the one God and the many, a movement from polytheism to monotheism, from the God of Israel to the God of the universe. The conflict, of course, was between those who would limit and attempt to monopolize God and those who would liberate Him as universal God. That battle continues.
Twenty-first century man has inherited many of those old tribal notions of deity. Once tribes, we are now great nations with superficial boundaries, each convinced of its own inherent superiority. And despite the insights of centuries that God is one God, a universal God, we keep regressing back into the primitive mentality of a local God, that He belongs to our nation, our class, our people and that His concern for others beyond our boundaries is at best nominal.
All of this is provincial nonsense and we know it because we know that “God so loved the world…” As Joshua makes clear in 5:13-15, the issue at hand is not whether God is on our side, but whether we are on God’s side.
One of the most incredible contradictions possible for us to conceive is to think of the universal God occupying some corner of our planet with an American flag (or any flag for that matter) in His hand, limiting His love to our land, withholding it from another; creating some people to be masters in the earth and ordaining others to be the servants. What kind of God would He be who wanted Aryans to be the superior people, the Jews to be forced out of existence and people of color to slave under the heat of the burning sun? Without a doubt, this is one of the reasons Jesus had to get away and leave the Pharisees; standing as they were in the temple, looking through a racial knothole, thanking God that He was local and would take their side against their enemies.
Martin Niemöller, was an anti-Communist who initially supported Hitler’s rise to power. But when Hitler insisted on the supremacy of the state over religion, Niemöller became disillusioned and later stated: “It took me a long time to learn that God is not the enemy of my enemies. He is not even the enemy of His enemies!” This is true. The love of God is not confined to the limits of man’s finite mind. He loves those who love Him and He loves those who fight against Him. He loves the saved and the lost and loves those who even as I write this hub, are writing messages of hate and books to prove there is no God.
And so again, we are left with the truth of mankind for without sinful man, there would be no wars.
The Christian Message
As believers, we can preach the Sermon on the Mount until we are blue in the face to people who are dead in trespasses and sins and we will not affect a difference. Sinners cannot practice it because they do not want to. They are “enemies and aliens in their minds.” They are controlled by their “lusts.” There is only one hope for man in sin, declared Paul, “But because of his great love for us, God, who is rich in mercy, made us alive with Christ even when we were dead in transgressions--it is by grace you have been saved.” Men must be regenerated; they must be given a new nature and made alive in Christ before they can even begin to comprehend the Christian message, let alone put it into practice.
The Gospel message beloved, which is the Christian message to an unbelieving world, is not concerned with international peace conferences or with political and international relationships or industrial disputes or in preaching against physical warfare. To do so is simply to waste precious time. What is needed is that we start with God’s fundamental principle, the doctrine of man in sin, in his deadness, in his hopelessness, in his utter weakness, in his complete helplessness.
The Church, body of Christ, has only one gospel message to an unbelieving world and it is captured in this one verse: “For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.” The Christian faith has no message to the world apart from that. But Holy Writ also makes it clear that while this is our message to unbelief, God nevertheless has done something about this sin and evil world by putting controls on it; He has set limits and restricted its power.
The Christian message to unbelieving individuals is that he or she can be delivered out of this present evil world; that there is an escape from condemnation that is coming upon this world. This is the message of the Apostle Paul. It is a message to individuals. It is not an appeal for people to reform themselves and do this and not do that . Rather, it is a message which says that as a result of what God has done in Christ Jesus, His Son, our Lord and Savior, we who were in the very time warp of that sinful condemned world can be delivered out of it. For Christ, “who gave himself for our sins,” Paul says to the Galatians, “rescues us from the present evil age, according to the will of our God and Father,” (Galatians 1:4).
As Christians, we fully realize that we are all citizens of this country and world and we are all involved in what happens to it. If we go to war, we are all involved. We do not escape because we are Christians but share in its fate. What is different for Christians is that while remaining physical citizens of this world, we have become spiritual citizens of another kingdom, a kingdom offered to us by Christ, a spiritual kingdom, a kingdom not made by hands, eternal in the heavens.
This doctrine works itself out in practice when we put our hope, not on anything in this world but in the Kingdom of God. We know that we are pilgrims here, strangers in a strange land, sojourners. We know that man is a creature who is ruled by lusts and that lust always produces war and that we may be confronted with it at any time and when we are, we are not surprised or fearful. We understand and have no illusions about living in such a world for we are connected with a Power that enables us to endure whatever comes to us in this world and be victorious over it. Let the world do its worst, we are sustained by “the victory that overcame the world, even our faith.”
Yes, there is the world and there are wars, but we get a promise from the Lord:
They will beat their swords into plowshares and their spears into pruning hooks. Nation will not take up sword against nation, nor will they train for war any more. Isaiah 2:4. All glory to God!!

Excellent hub with great insights to ponder. Truly as christians we are so blessed to be part of the unshakeable Kingdom of God. Everything in this world is bound to fall apart but praise Jesus for our living hope in Him. His Kingdom is an everlasting Kingdom. All earthly kingdoms are bound to end one day. I am looking forward one day that all wars will cease, When God's kingdom is finally established here on earth. Thank you for sharing this very timely and inspiring hub. Blessings to you and best regards.
Rev Lady, I skipped over and read the article you referenced. I couldn't get past the seeming lie of the obama interview, he was a Muslim then and part of his change was foretold in one of his books that I read prior to the elections that from memory loosely said, "if the political winds were to shift toward Muslims he would side with them". I still feel that the "stink" over rev wright was simply to draw those not paying attention to consider him a "Christian", and had he ran on a Muslim platform, his narrow win would have been a narrow loss. That is just my thoughts on him. I read somewhere that he has not darkened the doors of a church since the election, I don't know if that is true, but I find it believable. I know this was not the intent of your hub, but I felt it needed said in regard to war as we are involved in two and teetering on the edge of both Iran and North Korea as both enter into the nuclear status in every ones world. I seem to draw the conclusion that God may will the leaders a country deserves, a loose thought I have when considering "So the Lord said to Solomon, "Since this is your attitude and you have not kept my covenant and my decrees, which I commanded you, I will most certainly tear the kingdom away from you and give it to one of your subordinates.” 1 Kings 11:11" am I missing the mark with this thought?
You have presented a hub worthy of study and much consideration on the principles of war or self defense for that matter as well. Thanks, 50
What a wonderful lesson you,ve given here.Iv,e often asked, why do we have wars? I guess it,s invariably going to happen no matter what we do, but don,t you think that the leaders we select makes a big difference?
I know that greed causes most wars, but now we have some who will make wars because of religious beliefs and all different religions believe they are right. I guess that
all we can do is trust in god to deliver us from evil and trust that leaders will come to believe that God is above all of us and those who make wars out of greed will have to stand before God one day and be judged.
God Bless You and your work
Your teaching is easy to understand.
Rev Lady: When I look through an atlas filled with various maps depicting the many different countries, and look and see all of the various flags representing each country it causes me to think back to when God got so upset with the building of the tower of Babel and decided to confuse the people who were all of one language, by introducing a multitude of languages to confound them and scatter them all. I know that God knew what he was doing when He did this, I know that he had some Godly Logical purpose, but I as a simple human cannot make sense of it. Maybe I'm not supposed to? I don't know. I just see all of the descention amongst all of the various nations today and think if only God had not done that back then. What might the world be like today?
It then causes me to wonder, when my last day on earth comes, and I am finally recalled home to heaven, what flag if any will I see flying atop the heavenly gates or atop The Mansion of The Lord.
Brother Dave.
Loved it! As citizens of the Kingdom of God we are not bound by the kingdoms of men even though we reside in them. Our loyalty and allegience is to Him alone. While war is a reality on this present Earth a day IS coming when all things will be set right under His reign. Greed and strife will no longer be the order of things. Let us work together to lead a lost world into this realization! I stand with you. We stand together for Him!
Eloquently put. Amen. The problems nations face are not political they are spiritual. Jesus was the finest example of how to handle all the unrest. He did not attempt to overthrow the Roman government. He focused on loving and changing the hearts of men.
Favorite quotes: "the issue at hand is not whether God is on our side, but whether we are on God’s side."
and "God is not the enemy of my enemies."
Great things to remember.
RevLady, as usual you got it said eloquently. Unfortunately, we as a people have learned nothing throughout it all, have we?
A very precious look at the causes of war. How we need to see ourselves in the light of God. Your thoughts are caring, and endearing for the intention of peace and love. God Bless you dear Heart.
I think this is my favorite hub. There is a lot of golden nuggets in this teaching. Yes you are right the only message there is that Jesus came as a man, die, was bury, but He Has Risen!! That is the only message there is and because of it those who believe will have eternal life, so why are we so divided. Great Hub!
Rev Lady, This is an excellent but sad in the fact that we have not learned from our mistakes. Your hub made so many excellent points and I enjoyed it thoroughly. We are blessed because we have a forgiving God when we repent and atone for our sins.
Both barrels blazing - the OT and the NT! You are correct in that the Lord loves everyone in His creation, and He Himself has no enemies. When He refers to Satan, He speaks of our enemy, the one trying to destroy us. The Lord's message is very clear, and yet, as you state, we can preach that message until we are blue in the face and it will not change things. Yahshua told us that the world did not listen to Him, it would not listen to us; and He was a green branch, much more pliable, and still broken. What more can they do to us who are not pliable? To do what Christ has asked of us will put us at odds with the establishment, with the world and its barriers and laws. Much like Daniel, we may have to walk willingly into some lion's dens believing that walk will not be the end of us. Great hub! I pray the Lord keeps you safe and strong in His Word! Peace.
Rev Lady You have respectfully, intelligently and graciously addressed the subject of the vertical perspective of war! “War is not only a consequence of sin, but also an expression of sin itself...” Amen
“But God has willed that there should be states and governments. He has willed the powers that be: “there is no authority except that which God has established. The authorities that exist have been established by God.” (Romans 13:1). Amen!!! I BELIEVE all of God’s WORD!
Our President and world leaders need much prayer! One cannot continuously overlook God and His principles and think that there won’t be any consequences… LORD HELP US!
I think it is so interesting how so many fight over what really is not there’s! “The earth is the Lord’s and everything that is in it…” Psalms 24. This is true whether you reverence God or not! If one could only acknowledge God the Father our Creator so much of this could be eliminated! I realize this is an idealistic concept; especially since we all cannot agree that there is only One true God! But there is much already recorded in His Word to prove its validity...
You have also used excellent examples such as David, King Hezekiah and Joshua…
“Without a doubt, this is one of the reasons Jesus had to get away and leave the Pharisees; standing as they were in the temple, looking through a racial knothole, thanking God that He was local and would take their side against their enemies.” This statement is brilliant! God is so often described in such a limited capacity to the point He is often reduced to a human level of power and significance or region…. This could not be further from the TRUTH!
As you so powerfully stated! “The love of God is not confined to the limits of man’s finite mind. He loves those who love Him and He loves those who fight against Him. He loves the saved and the lost and loves those who even as I write this hub, are writing messages of hate and books to prove there is no God.” Amen! & AMEN!!! We in our little finite minds cannot even begin to conceive the totality of The One and only infinite God!!
There is much for us all to ponder here! Time is of the essence! There will continue to be mass natural disasters, wars and rumors of wars…. It certainly is clear that the last days are dwindling and the end time is rapidly approaching for our Lord’s arrival! “All the nations will be gathered before Him and He will separate the people from one another…” Matthew 25. We must live each day as though we expect the Lord to return… God is aware of everything; He is OMNISICENT! “I tell you the TRUTH, whatever you did not do for one of the least of these, you did not do for me. Then they will go away to eternal punishment, but the righteous to eternal life,” Matthew 25. Our HOPE must always be in the LORD! May Our Father & Lord's Favor continue to rest upon you! Thank you for sharing, In His Love, Peace & Blessings
Wars will be here with us until end of time,as man is greedy as he wants what he has not got, he thinks its freedom, howe wrong man is, the only freedom that there is available is with God.
When will man wake up to this?
Yes wars are bloody from way back in the ages right up to now, they are no better.
The only PEACE that man can have is with God, will man see that time is getting closer to the end time or is it that they have been blinded?
God loves you
RL thank you for bringing some well cited and poignant teaching and observations. You always stir both heart and mind staying true to where the heart of God is.
Hopefuuly we can all applaud our heavenly Father for his foresight and outragious love and wisdom for "ALL" mankind to be won over not by a sword but by a cross. Even the closest followers of Jesus didn't get it, still thinking that he would overturn the nations by force as they were of the mindset that God was a God of the Jews only! How blessed we are to have the ability to have an overview of history throughout the ages and also a present revelation of what is in God's heart for every man, country, nation; to win their hearts for the cause of Christ, love, forgiveness, grace, mercy, peace, and redemption. Such a profound concept to see initiated from our hearts to others. The warfare we now fight is one of a spiritual dimension that confounds the minds of believers and nobelievers alike. Thank God that this is the one war he favors us in truely winning. Blessings, St.L
A very good morning to you, Reverend Lady!
Anything of war is very depressing to me, as you already know. But by the end of this hub I find myself almost rejoicing. New hope and refreshed belief in the Lord's tomorrow fill me.
“..The issue at hand is not whether God is on our side, but whether we are on God’s side.” Oh, I like that very much. And I do believe that we DO forget that He is a God that “loves the word.” Jesus died for ALL!
I like what you had to say to brother DM, about possibly seeing a flag that says “welcome home!” I choose to believe that that is the flag that will be flying atop the heavenly gates. HALLELUJAH!!
Come Lord, quickly!
Keep writing, RevLady, and we will continue reading.
Sending you lots of love and GIANT hugs today, in Christ Jesus name.
VKA
Our Lord is a patience Father, who has to deal with disobedient stiff necked mankind. Bible states there will be wars and rumors of wars, he already knew we can't be trusted to love one another in peace. Mankind wants Gods job, but they need to read and heed Revelations.

I like your point about God not taking sides with a specific nation. I believe that people often forget this point when they are feeling strongly patriotic. Yes, our country was founded on the principles of allowing people to serve God freely, but that does not mean that everything our country does is good in God's eyes.
